I dont know how youd think an audi looks like everything on the road, id much rather a Audi over a Beema any day, because all the young execs, richboys and general wankers drive them, 318i you say? welcome to the world of driving a slow shitbox, there is nothing you can do to make it fast at all, sounds shit and handling is nothing special, if it had to be a beema id much rather a 325 or something along those lines....

Why not a nice audi

I wouldn't go as far as calling a 318is a shitbox..... and I don't want another turbo car. I do still want a 2 door though. As for that Audi, that looks like half the cars on the road to me :) I guess I just see things differently : Unfortunately the 325's ( not old ones ) are out of reach $ wise.

318i is dreadfully slow and theyre overpriced to the max for what they are... an OK car overall but there's better things around for the money.

Remember with BMW's too, they do break and when they do it's going to cost you a whole lot more than most other brands to fix it as well.. BMW spare parts will milk you for every dollar youre good for and then some. Insurance is also quite high on BMW's.

If the budget is quite limited (which it is by the sounds of things) I'd be staying clear of the BMW...

Get a 320i, 2 litre six with vanos, it's a very smooth motor and loves to rev. Doesn't have the balls of a turbo RB25/RB30. But you will be way more happy then the 318 4cylinder POS.

One thing to watch is that the oil on the dipstick and the valve gear (can be seen with oil cap off) isn't burnt.

Being high output engines they require very good oil of the correct grade. (0W-30 on most late models)

Probably the best thing to look for in the way of maintenance history.

Thats a Ac schnitzer BMW in the first picture,isnt it?Looks awesome but for a AC schnitzer,I know those are not cheap.

My mate had a BMW..tried fixing something on the car but couldnt while losing some bolts along the way.Took it to the BMW dealership to fix for that piece of mind..they changed him $20 a bolt for every bolt he lost.He wasnt a happy man at all..

Ever thought of owning an Honda DC2 Type R Integra? Still fun on the twisties, with lots of room for bits and pieces (lift back)... It's also in the $20k bracket.

And there's no point in modding them cause the engine is already too highly strung.

This way you get to stop modding, grocery shop, and track the car.

how about getting your self a nice lexus ls400? or any other lexus for that matter, they are very nice cars with the looks and power you look for in a coupe. as well you get that toyota seal of approval (fantastic build quality) and peice of mind knowing that the engine wont stuff up!

I hear you Ryan, but I'm comparing the BMW to the Skyline as far as repair cost and insurance are concerned. Neither is cheap to insure or repair but the BMW is less likely to need constant attention IMO.

I know that if I was smarter, I would have left the 32 95% standard and I would have been a lot better off but that's in the past now.

I've got to say, the more I talk to people, the more I get talked into moving up one rung and into the 320ci. Just wish I had a bit more money to play with ( sits and thinks about all the money thrown at the Skyline....... ).

Thanks for the reminder on the oil issue with BMW's. Yeah that's one I remember from the days when I used to work on them. They need the right amount of clean / correct oil or things get expensive fast ( same as a Skyline I guess :) )

Unfortunately, I HATE front wheel drive cars ! I'm just not a FWD person :rofl: Oh and could you imagine the "V-Tech YO" jokes I'd have to put up with............ :) But Thanks for the thought :banana: You coming on the next Putty Rd cruise ?

Gave this a thought too but the LS400's are getting pretty old now. Getting too close to needing major work. On the Toyota subject though, maybe a non-turbo Supra is worth consideration............. :)

Not many are clean examples though mate, so if yours is nice and neat you've got nothing to worry about. It WILL sell and at a decent price.

BMW repair costs bypass Skyline repair costs, especially gts's which are reasonable cheap to repair. BMW Insurance isn't far off Skyline either even for an older driver. Sounds like you've got your heart set on the BMW anyway so good luck with it :)

Yes, BMW servicing will be a killer, and watch out if you ever damage the thing!

If you must have a BMW, then the E36 325i coupe has to be the pick, the 318s are a decent looking car, but they have no balls at all. You will miss the extra power the first time you try to overtake someone.

Have you considered something like a Senator? They have all the creature comforts and decent power, and they can be had for under $20k, but if you really don't want a Holden then I suppose it is out of the question.

OK, so I need to go test drive a 318 now to see how bad it really is ( since you have all convinced me that the 318 is going to throw me into suicidal depths of depression the first time I plant the throttle ).

Then I'll have to do some replacement part investigations to see how bad it really is ( not worrying about servicing costs since I do all my own service work ).

Again, a 320 or 325 would be nice but too expensive :rofl:

Senator ( Ford/Holden/Mistu etc )....... I just can't do it !! If it was a company car I'd be OK but it's not something I would buy. One day in the future I may end up being a dad. THEN I will hang my head and buy a 4 door. Sure, you can call it a mid-life crisis if you want :woot:

Wil, I don't know what to say except BRAVO !! You have a g/f who owns her own Skyline and is willing to drive you around......... My hat's off to you :)

I would have a look around for an E36 325/328 if I were you. They really aren't that expensive, even E36 M3's are coming down to around the $30k mark, which means that the 325 will be getting around the $20k mark. I remember seeing a 325i Motorsport not long ago which was modified (paint, wheels etc) for $22k.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
