hi. all. this is my first post on here so ill intoduce myself as well. name is callum. bought my first skyline about 7 months ago now and have been looking for a car club to join is NSW and this place looks like it may become home. anyways ill get on with the topic for now.

basically i am the first aussie owner of the car. its a 1994 R33 GTST. car has been running fantastic out where i take it for a good hit. basically one night i ran the quarter mile and it all seemed fine. except for the fact that when i was slowing down at the end of it i put it into first gear and the car bunny hopped to a stop. engine was still running. i then turned around thinking it was strange and in first gear again gave it a small hit up to second gear. the car started jerking again.

i pulled over and found oil ontop of the rocker covers. had been coming out just where the hose clamp near the inlet is as it was a bit loose. this was very quikly looking like a blown turbo.

so i took it home and pulled of the pipe and sure enough there is some engine oil there and it had also sprayed out the BOV.

so i marched off to place i was reccommended near me called tunehouse in Marrickville. he said i could fix it or go for a better turbo wich is as the heading says a T3/T4 Hybrid. the whole thing to do would cost around $3500 full installed. does this seem a bit dear or a good price. has anybody used him and know if he is any good. his workshop looks pretty good but you just never know.

also would i maybe be better off purchasing a good turbo myself and supplying it to him.

Welcome, Callum. Surf around the forum and see what is posted. There is a wealth of knowledge amongst the owners, and plenty who are willing to share experience. Learn how to use the search function, it will serve you well.

Re the cost, check the price that Slide is offering for a bolt-on plain bearing hi-flow. If he can sell them for that sort of money, then the workshop who quoted you is making plenty on the job. Nismoid is right.

I went to tunehouse once, for a quote, but they gave me that crazy routine - depends on this and that...bring it in and we'll go from there.

That scenario never ends well.

I went elsewhere.

I'm cant comment on their work, but when you see a workshop as spotless as theirs, you know it's not gonna be cheap.

Get a few quotes, i'm sure around $1500, as R31Nismoid said, would be closer to the mark.

well seeing has the turbo is gone you might as well high flow that one instead of purchasing another.

The only advantage to purchasing another one is so you can still drive around, which in this case you cant anyway.

just talke the turbo off, clean it all up and ring around to get some quotes on a high flow. Save yourself some money and at least install it yourself its not hard.

to replace the turbo myself on my car whats involved. is it basically remove the turbo housing bolts and replace it with another. im just thinking of getting something a bit better that stock as i was running higher boost that reccommended. once i replace it and tighten all pipes etc should i just take it somewhere to get it tuned and thats it?

    • Well, this is probably where a wiring diagram and a multimeter come into play.
    • I can say to anyone thats doing this; having done a number of R clusters; just be careful if its an unknown cluster.  It takes a bit of force to pull up; but if it feels excessive then its probably stuck. I've had this and pulled the entire hair spring out; and I can tell you; its not easy getting the correct spring replacement with the correct inner diameter and winding. In my case someone had used some sort of adhesive to stick it to the spindle and it pulled the whole spindle out; which the force seperated the hairspring from the spindal and caused it to deform.  You may have to clean it (IPA); or in my case if i'd known i should have used some sort of solvent on it.  Also check out Cruizin Central on eBay. He does all sorts of dials; and you can email him with any custom designs you want. So if you want like certain logos etc...he'll send you a mock of what it will look like then you accept the order and he'll take care of the rest. Fantastic dials and he can do basically any design you want. 
    • Have you confirmed its the actual axles? Also the wheel bearings that mount on the hubs to hold the axles wear out. I replaced mine as they got play in them. It sorted my play issue. 
    • Ive converted a few clusters for the R33 with 320km/h dials. On the back there are some pads which can be bridged or unbridged (using solder or wick braid) to calibrate it. There is one bridge which is for MPH <> KPH; and there are combinations of bridges to offset it. There is probably a diagram  For example; this is my conversion for a 180km/h dial to a 320km/h dial (I put custom GT-R dials on it with the GTS25t layout) If you have J2 soldered (assuming the S clusters have a similar config to the R clusters); you may need to remove that solder
    • Back on topic 😉, these are some of the notable pages from the booklets that are supplied with each weekly parts update. I never knew the BNR32 test mule car had an S13 Silvia front end... *Edit: On closer inspection the test car still had the R32 body, but only the front end had Silvia panels etc.
