Hi

I am currently in the process of building an engine RB30/26 combo. What I have discovered is that the only brands apart from the jap brands BIG $$$ is the ARGO and SHALLAK versions which cost around $2,600 a set which is still bloody expensive. I have been in contact with a workshop with a good reputation in builidng race engines and we have decided to see if we can try and get a suitable rod out of whats already available. What I am after the rod length of the followin stock rods:

* RB20DET Rod

* RB25DET Rod

* RB26DETT Rod

*RB30ET Rod

The rod length must be exact and from middle of gugoen pin hole to journal hole. We hope to be able to souce rods good for around 600-700HP for around 800 a set even a bit more will be worth it compare to 2,600 for the aussie ones and 4,000 for the jap ones.

Yes, up until recently they haven't been making them, but I believe they are now available. Previously the US market has only been after rods for SR20's and VG30's, but now Skylines are starting to become more popular Eagle has decided to make rods for them to.

See'ya:burnout:

Hi guys, if you check the measurements of the standard rods you will find that they are very, very close to the sizes of some very, very common conrods that you can buy, off the shelf from a large number of suppliers. No they aren't made for Nissan's, something much more common in the home of good conrods.

Don't fall into the trap of matching the little end to the standard Nissan gudgeon pin. Aftermarket pistons have the "right size" gudgeon. And remember that Nissan have a variety of big end bearing thicknesses, so you can make minor corrections in the big end journal dimensions as well.

I am looking forward to having this data in the public domain, so good hunting................

Try cunningham rods in the states they do anything rod sizes and they are mega serious rod. they have special patent design and are suppliers to alot of the lemans team. so they can't be that bad. also i think mine cost under 2k

I have found out what rods can be used, they will require very small modifications and they are good for around 700-800HP and cost around $899. The pistons used are RB30 pistons with the pin size to mach the rods. Sydneykid am I getting close????

How's your venture with the rods going?

I'm interested to know as well cos i have an RB30 block and crank sitting in the garage doing nothing... i don't have rods or pistons so i also need to know what specs i need!

Cheers,

Andrew

I learnt that the V8 Chevy Small block 6" Small Journal rods can be machined to fit, I am still deciding which path to take since they are rated at 800HP for eight, then that makes 100 per rod which in an RB means 600HP at the flywheel, I am aiming for closr to that at the wheels, I am able to get a set of RB30 Carrillo Rods for 2,400 which will take 800HP and 9000rpm quite easy. Unless someone else has used the SCAT, Eagle or equivalent rods with success at say 600HP at the wheels with proof I might bite the bullet and go the Carrillos.

yeah $2400 for rods seems HEAPS!!!

i'm looking for around 300rwkw, but would like to build the engine to cope with 600hp at the wheels as well incase further down the track i decide to upgrade the gearbox and go for big power!

are the chevy rods fully prepped, eg forged/linished/shotpeened or what ever is done to make strong rods?

cos maybe you could get those rods and have them strengthened further... like chryotuff :P

Well they are fully prepped and Cryo Tuff may strengthen them further but not sure. 2400 is cheap for Carillos ARGO's are around the same money and NIZPRO quote $3600 for Carrillos they are the best you can get for a street engine. May be if we ask for two or more sets we can get a discount ????

GR8NES

sounds good to me!

$2400 is fairly pricy, especially as i'm not going for 600hp at the wheels... what do you reckon the chances are of getting them under $2k? :P

maybe those chevy ones will tie me over till i need more power, then i can pull out the rods and put in better ones. Then there's the other side of the coin. $900 for the chev ones or $2400 for the carrillo ones, it's gonna cost me $1500 to do the change over down the track anyway, even if i do most of the work myself!

600hp at the engine... what would that translate into rwhp?

GR8NES, can you confirm that the rods to suit an RB25 are 6"? What are the exact dimensions. Also what Chev block is it that uses these rods that are the same size as the RB ones? Sorry, these are alot of questions, but if one company makes them (chev rods) - alot of companies will make them, and from what sydneykid was hinting at, I will bet that there is a company out there that makes the right size, at the right hp rating, and the right price - just not under the nissan tag.

Sorry there are a few questions here, but I wouldnt mind doing a bit more research myself and then post up any results for all to share

Cheers

Steve

Just did a bit more research after asking those questions. Chev 6" rods are used on the 350 and 400 - are these the ones we are talking about GR8NES? Cos if so, I will shoot an e-mail off to carillo and get the low down on the rating per rod, and the cost.

Cheers

Steve

    • Thanks mate, couldn't find in VIC, ended up ordering one from NSW, getting rwc to get new plates and registration done.
    • Before all the EFR fan boys come in, have a look at: https://www.garrettmotion.com/racing-and-performance/performance-catalog/turbo/g-series-ii-g30-825-58mm/ It also comes in a T4 1.06 divided housing. I would dare say if you want response & also decent power, this thing would chop.   AND apologies, just re-read your post, you've already bought the turbo... whatever you do, make sure you stick with divided housing and proper twin scroll manifold.
    • People have got to stop doing that. ShatGPT is not a search engine. It is a hallucination factory.   I also would recommend the 1.05. The .83 will "work" for you , in that it will be more responsive, but I think you'll find that it won't be anywhere near as good running it out to 8000rpm as the big housing will be.
    • Decided for the first time ever I would tow my car TO the track day on the same working theory as bringing tools and spares "if I have it I wont need it, but if I leave it behind i will 100% need it" all setup and ready to go out and try these A050 for the first time First session showed I needed to stiffen up the dampers a touch but still managed a few 1:21's without much effort. things were looking good. Came in a dropped the tyres down  to 26/28 as they had gotten to 35/33C from 22C cold The first lap of session two I managed to drop into 1:20's. Then in the second lap into the second session. Coming into T3 and I suddenly lost brake pedal followed by some huge rear end vibrations and scraping sounds. Got it back into the pits after session ended and found this. in the attached video, all of the wobble is in the hub its self, wheel is mint, and bearing feels tight. lKXLqpd - Imgur.mp4   Deciding it was a bent spindle I tried to find bearing/hub assembly locally but was unsuccessful so it was loaded back onto the trailer i luckily brought it on to drag it back home
