Hey govich what do you mean by that?

Just went for a little drive again, what I notice is that it spools quickly to 0 and then I can hear a pschhh sound as if its being released.

I quite don't get it. The car is running fine. Its as if its a skyline with no turbo on it.

Going by the picture, could it be anything to do with the turbo?

Hopefully the thing is installed. Actuators maybe?

Can anyone tell me if this is right? I have circled it on the picture below.

Cheers

OK. Is this an accurate description of the problem?:

Engine idles fine.

Engage a gear, try to accelerate and it works fine with light throttle opening (boost gauge reads <0).

When you press the gas pedal a bit more, the boost gauge snaps to 0 and you hear a constant pshhhh, the car stops accelerating and engine starts running like a dog, blowing black smoke etc.

If so, i can tell you with 100% certainty there's a leak.

Actually your right on everything except the part where i start hearing that pshhh sound, the car isn't struggling, its as if its running as a normal car without a turbo. Thats why it feels like the boost is just being released at 0 instead of what 10psi.

Weird?

If it does start running like a pig and blowing black smoke etc, then it's between the compressor and throttle for sure - the AFM reads a certain airflow value, the computer dumps the required amount of fuel in, but the air is leaking out somewhere so the AFR is way out..

Otherwise, if it's well behaved, the wastegate opening prematurely (or just not functioning..) is my guess, though then i'm not as sure since it's never happened to me - the leak has.

I actually don't have that problem, the black smoke.

I do however have a remapped ecu... before the turbo and fmic my afrs were set a bit rich because the guy who remapped it set it as if a fmic and the new turbo was in?

The boost controller is fine since I just got it today.

Before it had the stock T piece and it wouldn't go past 0 still. It did the same thing but now with the turbotech boost controller it feels as if the car is running stronger probably because it only allows it to spool more boost but just releases it at 0.

So you think its the wastegate? It is an internal wastegate btw

i'd be pulling the dump pipe off to make sure it isn't fowling with the wastegate (to make sure it isn't stuck open) and to check the condition of the exhaust wheel. it could be that the shaft is broken also.

Yeah, the fact that it isn't blowing black smoke or running like a dog eliminates the intake, leaving either the actual compressor itself, or the exhaust side. Either way i'd say the problem's in the actual turbo itself (including internal wastegate).

i only have a garrett to compare it too..

but i would say the bearing cage is upside down.

they must have tapped a thread into the bearing housing to screw the fitting in.

the area you circled should have the oil drain bolted to it.

I guess all I can do is to get it checked professionally.

Mind you that the turbo is brand new.

I wouldn't have a clue on how to remove the turbo.

Guess I would just have to spend more money to get it checked.

Thanks guys for the help anyways

in that picture it doesnt look like the wastgate is stuck open

any way of removing the piping into the turbo and check that the wheels spin?

Umm Crave don't quite get you there when you say remove the piping? which one?

Also the part that I circled, is that supposed to connected like that?

Looks like it should be a bigger connection or something because of the bolt threads thats there on the side

can you take a pic from underneath the turbo looking up at it. where the oil drain is conected.

cheers

the inlet piping from your air filter ...

easier to do than the exhaust, just to use your fingers to see if the turbo is spinning.. if not its seized completely and turbo is cactus

the oil feed is using a banjo fitting, looks fine - there are other types of fittings that could have been used, that is what that bolt hole would be for - that one does look like the type used for the oil drain backs .. this where you heading Daz ?

That line on the top is supposed to be for the oil return on the bottom of the turbo. The top is for oil feed and the bottom is for oil return. In other words, someone has turned the compressor housing and exhaust housing and has made all of the oil and water lines upside down. Pretty odd how they have done it because it would have been a fair effort to get that banjo bolt into the oil return aswell.

Turbo will have to be pulled off and all of the nuts around the back of the compressor housing and exhaust housing need to be loosened off and you need to spin the housings around the right way.

BTW i would stop driving the car the way it is.

Thanks, Mike

yep..

to me it looks like the lines have been put on upside down.

he said a panel beater installed it...

if its the case then they would have tapped a thread into the housing and filled the

bearings up with metal filings.

i would say its shagged...

take a pic from under the car.. then we will know for sure.

    • I appreciate the detailed explanation, think I understand now. I spent the better part of last night reading what I could about shuffle and potential solutions. I had replaced the OEM twin turbo pipe with an alternate Y pipe that is separated further away from the turbo. The current one is from HKS and I had a previous pipe that was separated even further away, both have shuffle. I had heard that a divider can be welded in to the OEM pipe to remove turbulence, and figure that aftermarket pipes that are more separated would achieve the same thing. From what I read, most people with -10 turbos get shuffle due to their size, though it's a bit less common with -5s on a standard RB26. I think Nismoid mentioned somewhere it's because OEM recirculation piping is common in Australia with -5 cars. It seems that the recommendation tends to vary between a few options, which I've ordered in what I think is most feasible for me:  1. Retune the MAP or boost controller to try to eliminate shuffle 2. Install OEM recirculation piping 3. Something called a 'balance pipe' welded onto the exhaust manifolds. I don't know if kits for this are available, seems like pure fabrication work 4. simply go single turbo My current layout is as follows: Garrett 2860 -5s HKS Racing Suction intake MAF delete pipes HKS racing chamber intake piping hard intercooler piping,  ARC intercooler HKS SSQV BOV and pipe Haltech 2500 elite ECU and boost solenoid/controller HPI dump pipes OEM exhaust manifolds HKS VCAM step 1 and supporting head modifications Built 2.6 bottom end All OEM recirculation piping was removed, relevant areas sealed off I'll keep an eye out for any alternative solutions but can get started with this.  Only other question is, does shuffle harm the turbo (or anything else)? It seems like some people say your turbo shafts will explode because of the opposing forces after a while and others say they just live with it and adjust their pedal foot accordingly.
    • That worked out PERFECTLY! Thank you big time to JJ. He was able to swap me his stock diff. He drove all the way to me as well. Killer! Removal & install was pretty straightforward. The diff itself is HEAVY. So that’s a 2 man job.  Man does the car drive nice now! Couldn’t have worked out any better 👌
