'ello.

Having a few problems with my computer at the moment...

The power supply on the computer has been a bit tempermental for about a week or so... sometimes starting, sometimes not (which required you to unplug it from the wall, leave it for a few mins and then plug it back in) as well as getting fairly noisy.

On Sunday night, heard a bit of a pop/bang in my room in the middle of the night (computer wasn't on) - couldn't see anything out of the ordinary, so went back to sleep.

Got up yesterday morning to come to work, and tried to turn the computer on - when i pushed the power button, the green 'power' light lit up for a split second, then the computer just went dead (this is what it normally does when the power supply decides to be tempermental) but for the life of me i couldn't get it to come back after trying all the usual tricks... figured the power supply must've finally packed it in... no worries i thought.... bought a new one on the way home from work yesterday.... stripped the whole computer down last night to a bare case, gave everything a good dust/clean (it was about a year old, so a bit of dust in there) and rebuilt the computer from the ground up....

after i pulled the 'dead' power supply out, i found that it had a blown capacitor, as well as some other (what appears to be heat related) damage.

went to fire up the rebuilt computer after it was all done.... nothing...

thought i must have missed the power switch connection or something so i pulled it apart again and had a look - nope, everything as it should be....

the motherboard is getting power (as seen by the green indicator light on the board itself) but nothing at all happens when i push the power button....

i'm starting to think maybe when the power supply blew, it sent a big surge through the motherboard or something and fried that as well...

bah... anyone got a spare Socket 775 motherboard/cpu around that i could try swapping my board/cpu with to see if they're still good?

I'm looking to upgrade anyway, but i can't be assed spending a bit over $2.2k for the parts i want.... can anyone do me good prices on hardware? :( (PM me if you like)

The parts i'm after are mainly:

ASUS P5N32-SLI-SE-DELUXE Intel Dual Core 2 nFORCE4-SLI - Motherboard

Intel ATX E6600 CORE 2 DUO /2.4GHz/4MB CACHE/1066FSB/LGA775 - CPU

XFX GeForce 7900GS 256meg DDR3 DVI/TVO PCI-E 480Mhz - Video Card *** x 2 ***

DDR2 1G(1024MB) PC6400 800Mhz RAM(single stick) Kingmax - RAM (Doesn't have to be this brand, but roughly that speed/specs)

Power Supply CoolerMaster iGreenPower 600W SLI Ready (ATX)(RS-600-ASAA) - PSU (Doesn't have to be this PSU, something with similar specs though)

Thermaltake Armor VA8000SWA Silver Alloy Case with 430W (Doesn't have to be this case, just something around this size with good cooling etc)

Oh, also, this means i won't have 'net access except for at work (very, very limited) so if someone needs to reach me for something, feel free to contact my mobile.

i had to hit the computer markets to replace my older gear

its not really old gear.... its only around a year old, and back then it was pretty much top of the line...

I have seen this once or twice before and I have been able to ressurect the motherboard by replacing the blown caps, they are there to protect the rest of the motherboard, but you need to find the exact same type of cap to replace them with, but you can usually find them on old motherboards.

Jason, before spending money, locate the pins on the mobo for where the ATX power switch connects and try shorting them with a screwdriver and see if the board powers up, I have in a few cases seen ATX power switches fail and the symptoms are the same.

It is a long shot and a rare occurance, but certainly has to be worth a go.

Another and more likely problem is that a MOSFET or CAP has died on the mobo. But you never know. I assume you have replaced the PSU with a new one? I didn't see you specify that in your post above.

Yeah, gonna have a look for dead caps etc this afternoon when i get home. Will also try the thing with the ATX switch.

bah computers, i wish I had a dollar for every hour I've spent getting them to operate from '82 till now.

Good luck with getting the latest Bahahah it will be old by the time you get home lol

Sad to say but they are not meant to last.

Anyone have a P4 processor fan? :laugh:

      Ha ha, yeah, I've had one following me around in my parts boxes since about 2007 I believe. Just a little iddy bit hole drilled in the one I have to let it vent out once pressure was removed from the engine side. Still no idea what I'd put it on, ha ha.

      Just read this... Just a little bit of a wild one! Do you think the driver was testing out a new feature/device for how to lose the cops in a high speed chase?   I also suspect, if the box has a road sweeper that does magnetic metal pick up, he does a LOT of work in the machining industry. Which is what most of that looked like, machining chips from a mill or lathe. And I bet they're RAZOR sharp! And from an environmental perspective they really do need to actually collect all of those little pieces too. I wonder how many people still cop flat tires over the coming months on that road?   As for insurance company, yeah, it'd be interesting to hear what they say to the owner. But realistically, he's right, that "It's his fault". In the way that, it was his truck that spilled it, so they need to clean it up. However, neither he, nor his insurance company may bear the end cost if they do an investigation and find out it was caused by someone elses negligence (And they know who)...

      Yeah, no matter what bad things people can say about Julian from Autospeed, he at least was capable of thinking and his inclusion of a check/relief valve in the plumbing for the Audi boost controller, that I made a copy of and used for years**, completely eradicated that problem. **It's still lying on my workbench where I put it about, um, 18 years ago and have never found a home for it!

      I didn't actually know this! I've seen photos of the H1, mainly outside shots, and they just look "different". I guess there'd be a few little changes like nicer rims, and probably the fact they have nicer looking paint with some depth and shine, which will make any vehicles body look different to the very flat colours of the defence force.   I've watched the guys on GHPC convert their Humvee to LS1, and they've done some really nice front shock upgrade. I'm waiting for the next video on it with the rear end done. I can't remember if they've already done it, or I dreamed it, but I believe they're also supercharging theres. They will be in the future doing proper long travel suspension too.   If you ditch out your big V8, as rubbish as it must be, send it to my place. I'll let the unreliable V8 motor and box be here. I just like V8s... So I'll find something to do with it... Even if that something is just taking up valuable space in the yard. I might have something Skyline I can send back in payment... Or even Ford Barra motors  (From memory you're in Canada yeah?) So you can then play with the legendary Aussie 4L version of an RB...  Except they don't have that distinctive random miss at idle like the RB25 does.

      Or you mean the age old problem of early 2000's manual boost tees, where they never let the pressure out of the line between the boost tee, and the waste gate, so after your first trip on boost, the damn wastegate liked to stay open and be laggy on gear change?
