Hiya, im new here and dont want to push my luck or any bodys buttons and get flamed for asking noob questions but... im a p-plater and and computer techy (i know its lame but hey it pays well!!). atm i drive a hyundai excel '98 model. its zippy but i dont know what zippy and whats not zippy because the only other car i have ever driven is my mates 98 (ironic) commodore which is aiight but i have had an obsession with lines ever since i was like 14-15 when my uncy drove me around his. im looking to trade it in. its insured for about 8k and i paid 7.5k for it so im thinking i can sell it for 6 maybe pushing 7 if im luky (i think the timing chain is about to snap tho lols  )

ok so thats enough of my life story :P im sure ur bored by now. basically im looking for a skyline r33 94-97 (im not sure about 97s i seems to think ppl are gonna say "naw theres problems with these" etc and im fine with earlier one just that i like the look of the series 2 front bar (i think that maybe its a bit noobish as i dont quite understand the whole series 2/ m-spec thing though i heard all skylines are m-spec). i have basically given my self untill late feb of next year to get one (money reason im tight whith cash). is it worth getting a GTST and letting say mum drive it till im of my p's and take it out on weekend or watever? or is work a valid reason to apply for an exemption becuase my work requires me to tracel alot from business to business sometimes they can be more than half an hour away and i can make multiple trips in one day. also i called the RTA and they said if the skyline isnt on the list then i can drive it. are the cops tight arses with this? so yeah im looking to spend around 15k nothing over 16 tho other wise its not an option :(

any way thanks for the tremendous amount of patiance, cheers all :)

hmm...

i'm currently driving an r33 GTS..i have an international license (erm..i'm from overseas) and i honestly think that though my car isn't turbo, it's still great fun to drive...whether turbo or not...wat really matters in a car is the fun and thrill u get from driving (non-speeding inclusive)...try an GTS if u're really desperate to drive a liner...and see if the fun will be able to last you till feb next year...then get a turbo..or else

i suggest....wait till next year..everyone should be driving their own bloody skyline...and not be some care bear and share it ard =)

2 cents given ...

p-plate = no v8, turbo, or forced induction of anykind... i dont think there are any exceptions, otherwise people would be exploiting the loophole.

There are exceptions to the 'rule' because there are small cars around with small turbos which do not fall into this category. Surely the legislation refers to the BHP to weight ratio. Most cars with engines above 2 litres with a turbo are out.

For example, the SMART car has a turbo and definately wouldn't fall into this category

Hang on a minute...your quote says the above, with no exceptions...which implies across the board according to your analysis of it!

There is no context in your statement apart from the words 'P-PLATE' and the laws partnering it. I only used smart cars as an example of a turbo car which can be driven by p-platers which defies your comments.

the problem with this is that you can get a little turbo motor (like a et pulsar) and turn it into a bloody fast car. my mate drove one at jamboree that ran low 12's.

any turbo car has potential to go much faster (even a smart).

darkboy & Eug, please take it up in private if you want to go to war over something so ridiculously trivial.

Hiya, im new here

Hi, welcome.

i like the look of the series 2 front bar (i think that maybe its a bit noobish as i dont quite understand the whole series 2/ m-spec thing though i heard all skylines are m-spec).

It's "Type M" (not m-spec)

More info here.

is work a valid reason to apply for an exemption because my work requires me to travel a lot from business to business sometimes they can be more than half an hour away and i can make multiple trips in one day.

Not sure about NSW, but in VIC you can only apply for an exemption for work vehicles if it's a company vehicle, not a privately owned vehicle used for work purposes.

Meaning... that if you got a "work exemption" you could only drive it during working hours, and you'd have to leave the car at work and catch the bus home.

I'd say keep the excel, save some money, build up your driving experience, and wait until you're off your P's to buy the car you want.

Apart from inflated running costs (eg; fuel, servicing, spare parts etc) compared to the Excel, the Skyline will also cost you heaps more to insure, especially for a male P plater.

You can find a rough guide to what people are having to pay for insurance here.

They have these laws for a reason ya know.

You're an inexperienced driver who has only really driven FWD gutless shitbox.

Don't get a 200kw RWD car..... get a GTS for a year and then upgrade.

Any skyline is going to be considerably quicker than your Hyundai - don't forget that.

rpr33 so they dont care that u drivign a turbo??? and on your license does it have conditions Y...if so your not legally aloud to drive it.

yeah i looked at that and theres no turbo skylines above 93 that isnt a 4door. but damn it seems they have banned just about any decent car :s

and yeah im inclined to agree being inexperienced. but im sortof worried about not getting worth out of the money, will it sell more more than i payed later on down the track with stricter p'laws?

If you mean can you sell a GTS for more than you pay for it after a year or so.... very unlikely.

But you won't lose much either...... if SA adopts these gay P-Plater restrictions then the market for

non-turbo cars is only gonna get bigger..... so I doubt you'll lose much at all when selling it.

Some people are gonna shoot me for this (and to you, go to hell) but do you really need a turbo? - from the sounds of it you just want a skyline. I was the same when i was debating buying mine, and in the end i had to question how often i could actually LEGALLY use a 200kw + car, so i went for the NA. Look at the benefits - cheaper insurance, less maintenence, they look exactly the same, plus the seats are comfy and they stop and turn far better than the falcodore cargo barges that i'd learnt to drive in. You might find that the go behind a 25DE is enough of a step up from the hyundai anyway

GTS25 skylines go pritty well i think. Handle good, fun to drive. you dont always need a turbo....

But it would be great to have one...

Well there ya go.....

Get a GTS25 R32..... when off ya P's go get some turbo gear, bolt it STRAIGHT ON without dropping compression and you'll be wiping R33's all over the place. A lot of people think NA compression is no good

for turbo engines..... tune it right and you'll be as quick as people running heaps more boost, plus less lag.

Means you can go ahead and start doing some stuff to your car knowing you'll keep it, so you can do stuff like stereo, wheels, suspension without having to transfer it into another car, or lose money on it by selling the car.

    • Hi guys . Can someone help me  I bought an Android screen for my Nissan fuga but it won't turn on
    • My guesstimate, with no real numbers to back it up, is it won't effect it greatly at all.its not a huge change in position, and I can't see the air flow changing from in turbulence that much based on distance, and what's in front of it. Johnny and Brad may have some more numbers to share from experience though.
    • Which solenoid? Why was it changed? Again, why was this done? ...well, these wear..but ultimately, why was it changed? Did you reset the idle voltage level after fitment? I'm just a tad confused ~ the flash code doesn't allude to these items being faulty, so in my mind the only reason to change these things, would be some drive-ability issue....and if that's the case, what was the problem? Those questions aside, check if the dropping resistor is OK ...should be 11~14 ohms (TCU doesn't throw a flash code for this) ~ also, these TCU designs have full time power (to keep fault code RAM alive), and I think that'll throw a logic code (as opposed to the 10 hardware codes), if that power is missing (or the ram has gone bad in the TCU, which you can check..but that's another story here perhaps).
    • Question for people who "know stuff" I am looking at doing the new intake like the one in the picture (the pictured is designed for the OEM TB and intake plenum), this design has the filter behind the front bar, but, the filter sits where the OEM duct heads into the front bar, and the standard aperture when the OEM ducting is removed allows the filter to pulled back out of the front bar into the engine bay for servicing, a simple blanking plate is used to seal the aperture behind the filter This will require a 45° silicone hose from the TB, like the alloy pipe that is currently there, to another 45° silicone hose to get a straight run to the aperture in the front bar Question: how will it effect the tune if I move the MAF about 100-150mm forward, the red is around where my MAF is currently, and the green would be where it would end up Like this This is the hole the filter goes through  Ends up like this LOL..Cheers
    • Despite the level up question, actually I do know what that is....it is a pressure sender wire.  So check out around the oil filter for an oil pressure sender, or maybe fuel pressure near the filter or on the engine. Possibly but less likely coolant pressure sensor because they tend to be combined temp/pressure senders if you have one. Could also be brake pressure (in a brake line somewhere pre ABS) but maybe I'm the only one that has that on a skyline.
