EPA - Need Std R33 GTR Exhaust - Please Help.

Recommended Posts

I just got EPA letter within a month after purchasing my car PLUS a defective notice for being too low, and the previous owner already get rid of the standard exhaust, therefore I need to ask for help from other R33 GTR owners....

Can I please borrow your exhaust for maybe 2 or 3 days? Any help would be appreciated, and does anyone knows any EPA tester without tighta$$ attitude?

And does anyone knows how they will perform the test? I mean I know that they will put the mic around 1 m away from the muffler in 45 degree angle, but what's the rpm point when the sound is measured?

Please do help me with the exhaust. :D

Any help, please email to [email protected] or [email protected] or sms to 0403413768.

En_One, i have a GTS-t full stock system, i don't know if the cat back seciton will bolt on... i have a feeling it MAY, as i don't think nissan would reshape the sheet metal under the car between the two models. Just check with a performance shop (give gerald a call at Ice Performance 0414359888) and see. If it fits you're welcome to borrow it.

Also Daalder in Box Hill tests them and they're reasonable fellas. Talk to matt.

Well being an expert on EPA testing, they have a little triangle type stand that is made of metal tube and they rest the microphone on a little holder that is attatched to the stand 1m away. The tip of this structure is placed at your exhaust tip and the test is carried out.

Attached to the microphone is a cord whic plugs into a hand held device that reads the db level of your exhaust. The tester sits in your car and revs it to 3300rpm. When the car has reached 3300rpm the tester takes his foot off the pedal and presses a button on the hand held device to record your noise output. This test is applied three times and either averaged out, or takes your lowest db read out. Cant remember.

The inspector then looks under the bonnet, and under your car and draws a very crude map of your exhaust from the turbo (or engine for all you N/A weaklings out there :D ) on your certificate. You then pay $27.50 and either pass or fail. the max db level you are allowed is 90db. I was once told by a very reputable GTR guy, that even a TOTALLY STOCK GTR exhaust system registers 89db.

You get given the yellow copy for your own records and send the green copy (with your EPA letter) to the EPA.

If you get tested with a resinator, you have to keep that resinator on at all times. If you get caught without it there are big fines and penalities. So NO you cant JUST put a resinator on. Better to put on the stock exhaust (which is just to Farkn obvious) or do a Ross special :D

3500? A place in Footscray tested it until 4100 rpm and I got the reading of 90.5 decibel.... Which one is true? LOL if only 3500 I don't think my xhaust will be that loud. <--- sorry i mean 5100 and when I was asking them why it is 5100 they said because it is the rule for twin turbo!!!!!!!

They should put the limit higher as I think the old grumbles next door always complaining bout the noise while in fact he is deaf.......

Well when u have a full epa test u have to take your car to the epa test station in mcloud. U got charged $27 because u went to an exhaust shop and they gave u a certificate which they send to the epa.

understand??? :D

    • A 1.5 way is a 2 way. It is just a 2 way with a less aggressive ramp on overrun.
    • The ABS and/or TCS being missing/broken will not cause the engine to misbehave. It just casues CEL to come on and annoy you. The CEL is useless if it is always on, so you have to do the things you have to do to get rid of it, so it can be useful. Being a Stag ECU, then yes, it will not expect TCS to be present. But it will expect ABS to be present and working. You will need to either make the ABS CU talk to the ECU (don't ask me what that will take on an NA R34), and make sure the hardware is working....or, you just need to blank it out in Nistune. Do not persist with the stock ECU. You will just have problems. Gte it Nistuned. Start from there. DO YOU HAVE A BOOST SENSOR? The ECU's boost sensor that it. It is connected to the loom at the rear of the coil cover. Usually rides on the firewall on an R34, but is usually bolted down to a bracket along with all the other crap at the back of the coil cover when a Neo is dropped into another car. If you do not have it, the ECU will shit the bed. So, do you have one?
    • So sadly the fuel pump etc was not it. The pump and filter is new and it is still cutting around 4000 rpm. A read something about ABS/TCS (engine is from stagea and ECU too so no TCS) and i dont know for 100% that my car has ABS. It has ABS "cube" in engine bay but i dont think it works(or at least from my braking experience). Can be something like that?  I will be driving the car next week to Nistune tuner to properly see what is wrong...
    • the Tomei LSD fluid with lsd kit. frustrated that it was shaking the car to crap and affecting everything else negatively, I pulled the diff last night, and removed the lsd carrier, could not find anything wrong, however it seem to be 100 locked up acceleration, and deacceleration, wondering if they sent me a 2 way not a 1.5??  either way I installed the stock open carrier back in place. test drove everything smooth as butter again. no shake, shutter, random, what felt like clutch slip and grab or drive shaft play, etc. something differently wrong in side the lsd. I might bother taking it apart (if possible) to figure out what's going on inside this carrier, as bought too long ago to return.  only draw back is its back to a one wheel wonder.
