OK pps – I'm sure I have posted this b4 – but my air condition finally full on DIED today, and I need an update on this info ASAP

I have an R32 GTR – and I'm pretty sure that my compressor went to a better place today (much sadness). I still get 'some' cold air – but I get a VERY loud bearing type noise (rattle) whenever the air cond is running

this is can't hear the stereo LOUD, I mean too embarrassed to sit at the traffic lights LOUD (even in Brisbane heat)

So – my questions are .....

1: where do I go for a new /replacement compressor. I spoke to Nissan and they quoted $1309+GST for a new one. I tried to explain that I did not need the gold plated one – but I was unable to convince them this was a silly price. I don't think I'll going that way any time soon.

I then spoke to Roger @ Sterling Auto Electrics (the go-to auto electrician for GTRs in Brisbane so I' m told) and they quoted about $990-$1200 for a remove, recondition and replace (includes full service of the climate control with gas etc). He told me that the compressor failing was probably because the TC valve was also broken (obviously ??). So this price also includes a check / reco of the TC valve (tape under dash that controls air into the cabin but also oil to the compressor apparently)

2: Who else in Brisbane can fix this for me ?

3: Anyone know what 'other' compressors fit an R32 GTR with climate control – Nissan seemed to think that R32 /R33 GTR and GTST are all the same, but Sterling Auto Elec said they are all different.

4 Can someone give me some guidance on how much time (number of hours) that is should take to remove and replace the compressor ?

To be honest – at this point the recondition service from Sterling seems to be the best option – but it's still over $1K. Roger seemed to know what he was on about, talked me thru the shelf diag functions and seemed to know the GTR quite well – but I'm easily fooled :)

So I'm open to other suggestions.

At work we use MR Cool airconditioning for our compressor rebuilds. They are just south of the city. Its a TX valve by the way :) My car is stripped (you may have read my restoration post) at the moment so i will probably get my compressor rebuilt. If you want me to help you remove it let me know. Its not too hard.

Myself being a GT-R owner and auto electrician, Rogers quote is about right. Gtst and gtr compressors are almost the same, you need to drill and tap in 2 threads onto the top of the compressor (the lugs are cast but not finished) as the suction pipe is different and further forward to clear the front turbo. And early and late models are slightly different as well. There is a bit of time in flushing out the system also, when the compressor fails it can put metal particles throughout the system.

thanks guys

I'll talk to Roger again today and book in to get it fixed

make sure it isn't the tensioner pulley on the a/c belt. mine actually died and made noise constantly.

thanks for the advice - but I had that replaced as part of a full engine rebild about 12 months ago.

I did not think to rebuild the air cond compressor then tho

car is already with the sparkys - should get it back on Monday - better than new apparently

Got them to install relays for my dull headlights at the same time :P

I think my compressors on its way out too it makes a rattling noise when the aircons on but it doesnt do it all the time (about 80% of the time) sometimes real loud sometimes fairly quiet, I knew this would happen just as summers approaching and I dont have the money to fix it ;)

let us know how things work out. interested to see how it goes.

OK - got the car back today (had the clutch done too - so it took a while)

Now - the air con is GREAT - very cold.

BUT

I think they must have missed somthing during the reassembly stage :(

When I push the car past ~4000rpm - I get no power, missing and just generally bad things start to happen. I spoke to Roger and they are happy to have a look on Monday - but can anyone give me some pointers in term sof what I could look for

feels like a MAJOR air leak to me ???

what will they have touched to remove and relace the comprsssor ?

Do you mind me asking how much the total bill came to in the end for you?

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
