As Howie said, changing coils is a must if you plan on doing anything with the car, it's nothing but heartbreak with the 34's getting them on a dyno then finding you've got igniton issues.

I learnt with the 1st one and never let it even get to that point with the current one, splifires all the way!!!!

A CAS issue is a possibility, did they check to see it was in the correct location in the first place?

Even if the CAS is in the correct idle position, because of the teeth on the gears of the crank angle sensor which interfaces with your camshaft is prone to wear, your timing will change through higher rpms. So what i did on my ca18de was advance the timing so it would run right when it was about 3500rpm and the having it retarded on idle - probably not the best setup i know - but it was okay for what i was running.

At the moment my casualty count for timing and ignition is 12 coils packs (six on the 34, six on the exa thru 7 years of ownership), 2 power transistors and 1 crank angle sensor and a partridge in a pantry. This problem has plagued nissan motors for the last 15 years. If i had known about bosch and splitfire replacement coils earlier, i would've saved heaps of man hours wasted on diagnosis.

'10 out 15' what kind of BS statistic is that. Sounds like your mechanic doesn't have a clue about what he's talking about. Do yourself a favour and find a decent a tuner.

I think the mechanic probably does know what he is talking about, theres about a million threads on dying coil packs on here. You can tell if its your coilpacks by the dyno as the graph will often be very jagged, that and it will miss and backfire around 5000-5500 rpm when you rev it out.
