Anyone had any problems with any particular sub(s) in the past

that other should stay clear of?

I'm considering getting a 10inch for my car , something that can

work well or is designed for a box < 1cu ft. It will be only 1 so

doesn't need DVC.

Options are:

JL Audio series

- Any model

Soundstream

- How are the new series. eg. Rubicon etc

Rockford Fosgate

- Not the punch series.

MTX

- I didn't have a good experience with a 15 last time

but how are they in 10inch?

Alpine

- I heard the ZR series go well.

I've never heard good things about sony or kenwood subs.

While we are on the top, sound deadening. Anyone done this

to their 33. Someone i know did it to their 33 and from what i've

been told, it costed quite a bit.

Ok..

Depends on budget. I Personally prefer the sound of larger subs, i have a JL15W0. Sounds great. I highly reccomend a JL10W0 or perhaps a 10W3 or W6 however they are more expensive. If you want to spend alot, and want something that sounds really really good.. Audiobahn Alum 10Q's are mad, i'm personally going to get a ALUM15Q in my car :P

Tell me --

a) your budget

B) what amp you plan to run it off

and ill reccomend a couple :P

Someone has something against MTX?

But, have to agree...

Anyway, if your front splits are good enough quality and set up right, then they should go low enough to allow a larger sub, hence a more even response across a greater frequency range hence better sound....you can still get a 12 (or 13) inch sub that will fit in a 1 foot cubed box and sound awesome doing it.

BUT

It all depends on your amplifier and your front stage. Better to match sonic signature with what you have up front..... I love the Focal gear..... a lot of the more commercial brands can tend to rely on marketing and name branding to sell their subs than sound quality. A lot of the time, it is a false economy to go with something mainstream.

Before I send you to sleep... I recommend the Focal Polyglass 33v. 13 inch sub, sealed enclosure, awesome sound quality for the money. I have one in my setup.

Slaz.

Pft IMO they suck :uh-huh:

i don't think splits should go 'low enough' to get a larger sub with a better response. each individual woofer of different makes have different frequency ranges, there are plenty of 10s that have a wider frequency spectrum than 12s....why should splits go 'low' when there is a sub that is sposed to go 'low'???

splits should cover everything above subass and then some...i understand that if there is a frequency 'gap' between the levels reached in between sub-bass and mid-bass there seems to be an issue, but this is easily solved...you can't simply say that 'better splits should warrant a bigger sub,' traditionally a smaller sub such as a 10 would make the gap between splits and subs smaller due to the higher frequencies that 10s can go to...but this is heavily generalised and subject to each unique woofer's abilities.

decide on the size of the sub you want my working out what bass you are after, and which individual sub suits your music tastes best.

i too am a lover of esoteric stuff, but focal polyglass? cmoooooooooon! the poly sub is ok but IMO the splits are a lil too harsh for my tastes...utopias are okay thou.

You misunderstand me, Ultimate.

First of all, I agree with your 'MTX sucks' comment.

The ultimate in sound quality would be to have a completely flat response across the entire frequency range. I have said that if you have a good set of splits set up correctly you can have a better than average bass response from them. This allows a greater freedom when it comes to subwoofer selection. A ten inch subwoofer may have been selected because its upper bass response is flatter than a 12 inch. In that context, if your splits have sufficent mid bass response, you can select a larger subwoofer to cover the lower frequencies better. I agree with you that there are some very good 10 inch subwoofers out there that can go amply deep enough, but if you compare a 10 inch sub witha 12 inch subwoofer from the same range, invariably the 12 inch will have the deeper response; hence better overall frequency coverage; hence better sound quality.

3 way splits are better, as in a perfect world, we would have about a thousand speakers all tuned to their little piece of the frequency range. However, I was talking about a simple option of two way splits up front and a single sub down back. I was trying to get the best response as possible with these components.

I do agree with your point of listening to as many different setups as possible to decide what sound you want. For the sake of space, my previous post would be about the first that did not have that comment in it.

And I did not recommend the Polyglass splits. Only the sub. One of the better SQ subs for the money, in my opinion. And yes, Utopia are better, but I was offering a value for money option.

All a matter of taste, as you said.

heh i got my wires crossed, i realised we both agree that mtx sux after posting... :P

flat RTA line, i wish i could achieve that!

yeah i agree with you there on the 3-ways...i was thinking that with a 2-way setup a 10 would be sufficient whereas with a 3-way more bass would need to be exercised

il still shoot for my Audison HR100 with some Vertias HLCD's though...on a side note, anyone know where to demo soundstream's new da vinci subs?

Yeah, so basically what im getting at is that whilst they work, and sound OK, they're DEFINATELY not the best bang-for-your-buck.

I spoke to XRSIST the other day, he's using an Orion amp, 2x200wrms.

Therefore i reccomend JL10W3. They're a good sub for the money. Sound GREAT in a small, sealed box. Louder than you'd expect, and the low RMS rating on them always fools people. I'm telling you now, they're VERY under-rated :)

Nah Ryan JL suck! (sorry, in-joke down here. A little competition with a friend who works at Autobarn) . No, really I think I am safe here, so I can say the JL is a nice warm subwoofer.

Haha, Ultimate seems like you have too much money :) Soundstream Da Vinci subs? You may have to go direct to the distributor for that, I imagine if they are as rare as the amps, that there would not too many kicking around....

I will stick with my Focal for now. I really like their sound and besides, being a dealer for them, I can get them much cheaper! :D

I am actually considering running some Peerless home audio drivers with some dummy loads to get them down to four ohms. Their 6.5 inch drivers sound awesome, as do their tweeters. And they have sealed back 4 inch mids, which would be very easy to install.....

Hmmmm.......

Focal dealer? SOB!

I'm a lil there with hookups for hertz and audison gear, although having focal as an option certainly does raise the possibilities!

lol

I feel sorry for my mate, had four peerless 10s, 3 caved in and 1 he pulled apart to find out why...

:uh-huh:

As for the Da Vinci's- i wouldn't want to buy one just to have a listen to it...if they are that rare stuff it, i'd rather have a sweet sub than a rare as rocking horse **** sub for bragging rights

Hi,

As Slaz said, I am a Focal dealer...and also one for Phoenix Gold.

XrSist, you can pick up a 13 inch Focal from as little as $585

So, not as unaffordable as you would expect....

And, I have just decided that all skylines australia members can have 10% discount. How does that grab ya?

    • I came here to note that is a zener diode too base on the info there. Based on that, I'd also be suspicious that replacing it, and it's likely to do the same. A lot of use cases will see it used as either voltage protection, or to create a cheap but relatively stable fixed voltage supply. That would mean it has seen more voltage than it should, and has gone into voltage melt down. If there is something else in the circuit dumping out higher than it should voltages, that needs to be found too. It's quite likely they're trying to use the Zener to limit the voltage that is hitting through to the transistor beside it, so what ever goes to the zener is likely a signal, and they're using the transistor in that circuit to amplify it. Especially as it seems they've also got a capacitor across the zener. Looks like there is meant to be something "noisy" to that zener, and what ever it was, had a melt down. Looking at that picture, it also looks like there's some solder joints that really need redoing, and it might be worth having the whole board properly inspected.  Unfortunately, without being able to stick a multimeter on it, and start tracing it all out, I'm pretty much at a loss now to help. I don't even believe I have a climate control board from an R33 around here to pull apart and see if any of the circuit appears similar to give some ideas.
    • Nah - but you won't find anything on dismantling the seats in any such thing anyway.
    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
