Hi all,

I got myself a R33 S2 GTST recently. The ride height is perfect for me. What I don't like is the stiffness of the ride on Sydney Streets.

I had a quick look underneath. I am not sure if they are coilovers or not. How can I tell ? The brand is Apexi. They are blue in colour. Part numbers are below. I could not find them on the net ? Is their an Apexi Distributor/Dealer in Sydney

Rear Shocks

Apexi 237-N005-R

(GL23)

Rear Springs

M3X01874

Front Shocks

Apexi 237-N005-F

What kind of springs are they? The shocks have an adjustment setting at the bottom. I have put them to the softest setting. Haven't had a chance to take it out for a spin yet. Front's were already the softest setting.

I am not sure of the condition of the shocks. Car has 59xxx kms on it. If the setting does not help, can I just change the springs to a softer one, provided the shocks are in good order. How can I get them tested ? Do i have to remove the shocks/springs form the vehicle. If they are stuffed are these rebuidable.

I am trying to keep the cost to a minium.

thanks heaps

Hi all,

I have done some research and it seems I might have Apexi T-max Shocks with possibly factory springs. Does anymone know what the spring rates are for factory springs or have any experience with T-max shocks.

thanks

easyest way to get a softer ride is to get new springs put in with a softer rate. Someone like your local Pedders should be able to figure out what your after if you talk to them for a bit and show them the car.

new springs if there just the standard type in there shouldnt cost too much, id have a stab in saying about $400-500 fitted?

If there height adjustable coilovers, to change the springs in those (small type spring) id be guessing more around the $800-$1000 fitted for some custom King Springs or something?

if you could post a pic of the actual coilovers it'd better help people to give you the right advise?

unfortunatly most Jap aftermarket coilovers are fairly stiff, great for handling, but yeah...not so much for street cruising.

They are not really coilovers, just struts. but I am told they they have height adjustments. Just struts. I might have to visit the local pedders.

I'll get pics when I pull them out of the car.

thanks for your suggestions.

Anyone know what the springs rates are for the standard springs in a R33 Gtst

thanks

This thread shows you how to measure springs so that you can send the dimensions to me and I will work out the springs rates for you.

Armed with the spring rates you can then make an informed decision.

 cheers :P

Hi Guys,

I have removed the springs and given then dimension off to SydneyKid.

I also had them tested at K-mac in Rockdale. They told me the Fronts are 160 lb/" and rears are 120.

I am not sure how accurate this is, beacause they are the progressive type and I don't think they probably loaded them enough so I am very interested to see what SydneyKids calculations are.

Is there anyone else in Sydney that can test spring rates specifcally around Liverpool.

Does this mean, that my shocks are probably too hard. I have put them on softest setting. I have also adjusted height to raise it before I put them back on the car.

Anyone know where I can get them re-valved/serviced in Sydney. The only ones I could find were Shock Reco in Brisbane.

The other question, why is the recommnded Front height higher than rear. Mine are set at 337mm all around I have raised them to approx 345 mm.

Will that make any difference in ride quality or its purely a height/preload adjustment.

I would like to get SydneyKids suggested shocks but cannot afford them at this time.

Will my springs be able to work with the his recommended shocks.

thanks again.

If those spring rates are right, the front will definitely work well with the Bilsteins (the Whiteline springs used are 165lb/in) but I'm not sure about the rears, they seem about right though, you will have to get SK to answer the question properly.

There is a difference in heights front to rear as the guards are cut differently, more clearance at the front. It should be a bit more comfortable raised up a bit and less bump steer. Shouldn't be a huge difference though.

Hi Guys,

Are KYB shocks any good with the springs that I have, which are probably lowered and not a very high spring rate.

I might be able to get a good deal on them..

Are they better than stock shocks in temps of bump valving and rebound for slightly higher rated springs.

thanks

Hi Guys,

I was after an opinion on the state of my suspension. I took some photos. The first two are of one of the front shocks and the 3rd is a rear unit.

I noticed that the front boots of both front shocks are stuffed while the rear is intact. Is this cause there is a lot of movement in the front, due to the weight.

I was wondering if the front bump stops are too long. Could this be a cause of the harsh ride. The center to guard height is 337 mm all around.

I was also reading up that these are short stroke shocks. Anyone know the dimensions, travel length of the blisten and/or kyb shocks. Trying to work out what the height might be with kybs and my current springs.

Also, can anyone tell me what the free length is of the front/rear Whiteline springs

Anyone used the shockreco place in brissy. Am contemplating on whether I should get my current shocks re-valved.

thanks for you help.

    • perhaps i should have mentioned, I plugged the unit in before i handed over to the electronics repair shop to see what damaged had been caused and the unit worked (ac controls, rear demister etc) bar the lights behind the lcd. i would assume that the diode was only to control lighting and didnt harm anything else i got the unit back from the electronics repair shop and all is well (to a point). The lights are back on and ac controls are working. im still paranoid as i beleive the repairer just put in any zener diode he could find and admitted asking chatgpt if its compatible   i do however have another issue... sometimes when i turn the ignition on, the climate control unit now goes through a diagnostics procedure which normally occurs when you disconnect and reconnect but this may be due to the below   to top everything off, and feel free to shoot me as im just about to do it myself anyway, while i was checking the newly repaired board by plugging in the climate control unit bare without the housing, i believe i may have shorted it on the headunit surround. Climate control unit still works but now the keyless entry doesnt work along with the dome light not turning on when you open the door. to add to this tricky situation, when you start the car and remove the key ( i have a turbo timer so car remains on) the keyless entry works. the dome light also works when you switch to the on position. fuses were checked and all ok ive deduced that the short somehow has messed with the smart entry control module as that is what controls the keyless entry and dome light on door opening   you guys wouldnt happen to have any experience with that topic lmao... im only laughing as its all i can do right now my self diagnosed adhd always gets me in a situation as i have no patience and want to get everything done in shortest amount of time as possible often ignoring crucial steps such as disconnecting battery when stuffing around with electronics or even placing a simple rag over the metallic headunit surround when placing a live pcb board on top of it   FML
    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
