Ah cool, thanks Nick...

Joel, how much i want to spend and how much i got to spend are two different things... :) But i got about 8k to spend... Hopefully my block i bought from Nick will be arriving sometime this week and i just paid for a RB26 head...

500-600HP is fine for standard rods.. (shotpeened & polished)

why bother? unless of corse its for track/drag use...

If its a street driven car you will be lucky to be using a quarter of that power during normal driving conditions.

There are better things you can spend that 1200 on.

Cheers,

Trev

2200 turbo

400 WastGate

450 RB30

1500 pistons

1300 Rods

500 -600 Block prep

1000 Cams

800 injectors + rail

400 fuel pump

1300 cheap computer

2000 RB26head

------------------------------

BANG 11K +++!! :)

-----------------------------

Bearings engine&cam??

head work/check?

Head Gaskets?

exhaust manifold?

Intercooler?

oil/air seperator?

Time on dyno?

Plugs & ignition?

Intake? (thottlebody?)

Piping?

Turbo lines?

Any cosmitic work? (polishing etc?)

---------------------

Just to list a few things.

Just a little somthing to think about before we see your project in the for sale section. :D

If you can save a few $$ here and there (rods) you might get to the bottom of the list with some money to put fuel in it! :D

Trev,

I agree with your statement on rods but please note that even though the RB30 rods are strong they can bend and can you imagine the damage that a rod can do at say 6,000rpm with a piston as a fist to your head (RB26) and your prepped block from your callculations the damage bill will be close if not over $4,000 so im my opinion $1200 is a cheap insurance policy

My 2 cents anyway

Jordan

Sure jorden,

I guess what i am saying is that with a 8K limit, i would be better distributing my funds. not spending 1200 on the rods. You have to be realistic with yourself on what type of power you will be getting from 8K (its alot of money, dont get me wrong). But with that type of dollar range alloy/forged rods are not really needed and would usally be considered overkill for a project of that size.

Cheers,

trev

Well i already have turbo, wastegate, manifold, fuel pump (Bosch 044 with Volvo lifter to surge tank), i have injectors and computer, well does Autronic SM2 fit the bill?? I already got that installed... Plus GTR Ignitors, intercooler and that sorta thing... So i have 8k to spend on the block itself...

JNR24 i appreciate the shopping list, but i am much further along than your assuming... I'm not a newbie with a stockie who talks the talk, i'm taking the steps as we speak...

Thanks.

Alan.

Hey i just rang rocket industries......Eaglerods dont make a set of rods for RB25/26 or 30s.

the only people that do (according to "Scott" in sales) is Argo.

They make a "I" beam rod for $2200 (Retail) for all RB motors.

Does anyone know if scott is talking shit?, and there are some other aftermarket manufactures of RB conrods?

Cheers,

Trev

Thanks for your enquiry, the rods for RB30 are custom only cost is aprox

$1900.00 plus gst .Rods are special order only must be paid in full before

being made. Regards Mario.

My non-vct RB25DE plenum is exactly the same as the RB20DET plenum.

Not sure about the RB25DET from the R33 however I don't think it would be much worth worrying about.

Hi guys, some of you probably already know this, but just in case....

Carillo, Eagle and a number of other US manufactuers most definitely make engine parts for RB's. But they have supplier agreements with the Japanese tuning shops that prevent them from selling them to you. So don't bother sending an email or a fax that says "do you make XYZ for an RB26?" They will always have to say no.

The way to do it is to order the parts by dimension, something like ......

"Do you have a XYZ that is 150 X 50 X 8 X 59 grams?" Don't mention RB or Nissan. You will get a much better response.

Better still look the parts up by dimension in their catalogue, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Hope that is of some help

Here's a quick run down on pricing..

RB25DE Head - $750

RB25DE Head Reco & Mild Port/Polish inc VRS Kit - $1100

RB30E Short Motor - $150

RB30E Rebuild inc. Forged Pistons, Shot Peened Rods, O-Ringed etc. - $3000-3500

Injectors - $900

Turbo - $2000 - $3000

ECU in & Tuned - $2000

Misc Bits - $500

Thats your $10,000-$12000 peoples.

+ Labour if you get some one else to do the engine remove and fit.

+ Your RB25DET gearbox if you have an R32

+ Suspension if it is currently stock.

= Before long you have spent more on mods than what the car is worth :(

I didn't realise how quickly it was adding up.

Who cares.. :( I don't. :burnout: :burnout: :burnout:

if i dont want to use VVT i can just bolt the head on as if it was the rb25de head cant i ?

the head has the oil squirter for the cam, but if the block doesnt have this i can bolt the rb25det head onto the block and just not use VVT ? is there a need to weld or screw up the oil feed? of is it right to leave as is?

    • Yes to both! Yes to standard ECU and tune, but exhaust is aftermarket. Unsure on brand. Actually have it sitting in at my desk haha! I have to set it up on my laptop but this is a great next step, will do. So I generally try to shift before 4.5K RPM most times. I largely don't do a lot of high-rev driving, but I will take it up to red 1-2x a week max, as I know the occasional "Italian tune-up" is good for these cars.  Oh wow, is this way better than what I'm getting. Does this mean there's a good chance I have an issue?   Thanks for all the info so far guys.
    • Old Son, did you re-use the Holden ABS in the new shell or try a different module?
    • Yeah, nah. I had the actuator rod off it today. The arm will not move at all. Neither out, nor in. Yeah, you'd think so, but I've been thinking about that. Even when the actuator rod fell all the way off at the beginning of this saga, it would build more boost and faster in lower gears than it would in higher gears, and you'd think that that was the opposite of what should happen. But I strongly suspect that there is a thing with the gearing getting the revs to rise faster, that there must be some transient effect with the gas flow rate rising quickly, that you don't get with the more steady state case of the higher gears. Keep in mind - the gate is not shut in either of my weirdnesses. So things are not "normal". We normally think about a turbo spooling up (below the wastegate target) with the gate shut. I have all sorts of mental models running now where the gate is a little bit open, and having it stuck open allowing gas out while it should be going through the turbine has all sorts of weird effects (in these mental models). I'm thinking in the higher gears, the ex mani pressure builds to the point where enough gases spill out the wastegate to just prevent the pressure rising much more at all, or just creeping up, all the whole the revs are increasing and getting closer to the point where a gear shift becomes necessary.
    • Is it possibly wastegate actuator itself is sticking, or even the rod to flapper? Otherwise I reckon things are getting a bit rusty/worn   Also odd it won't boost in 3rd to 5th, but will in 1st, I'd expect the other way around with it slightly open as there's more time on your way to redline for it to spin up
