Disappointing day fer me. Car was not boosting properly, only had 1.3bar of boost on the clubman sets and it only got worse as we went into the nationals, with the car only getting 1bar and eventually just 0.7bar on the last set of national. The dunlop dz02g gripped quite alright, and running 235/40/18 front and 265/35/18 rear was not a problem fer the attesa, most of the time that is, except fer the first set on the national when 4wd went off halfway. The revised suspension setup with alignment changes worked much better thru the corners though, especially turn 1. Just wasn't boosting properly. :(

But well, congrats to jetman on winning the AWD shootout! GTR took first n third in race, and took first in street as well i think, so i guess its still a wonderful day fer the skylines!

And manz, russell's car is unblivable, so clean so fast.

Top job Paul! It was a wonderful event! Hope to be back on the track soon again after i sort out the problems.

What a day. GTR's as far as the eye could see. Too many to mention. Suffice to say the day belonged to the awesome gtr's in both track and street.

Got there at 8.30, watched a full days programme then dropped in to willowbank for the test and tune. BIG MISTAKE! Never seen a wednesday night so crowded. All gettin ready for the mini jam on saturday.

Suffered the embarrassment of being towed off the track when the bionic wheelchair blew a cooler hose off. Fixed that, ran a couple of 13.8" and just got home. I am FAAAAAAAARKED!

Well done again Paul, another smoothly run day and alot of fun. The event format was great too, something a bit different to the usual track day stuff which made it more interesting for the competitors.

Good to catch up with a few familiar faces too.

unfortunately my afternoon ended early with a leaking coolant pipe to the turbos - at least that's where I suspect its coming from, kinda hard to see anything in that engine bay! made it home no worries with the radiator cap half released to limit pressure build up in the system and reduce the leak. Shame cause I was having alot of fun racing around on those Federal tyres! 1 hot lap and they turned to jelly underneath you!

One little gripe though - a couple of other competitors in the street section were running semi slicks and should have been in the race class.

J-Boy, unfortunately Cam rolled his Evo8 at MtCotton a few weeks ago:

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the great feedback. The day was a blast.

The AWD battle on track was fierce with some surprise results and unfortunate early retirements. The event was about getting through the preliminary rounds and still standing stong for the sudden death 3 lap battle on the Sprint track with a single best lap taking the prize.

The final battle was between 3 EVO's and 2 GTR's and was going to be close.

The final results in the Race Class:

1. Michael R32 GTR 57.32

2. Mark EVO IX 57.65

3. Steve R34 GTR 57.79

4. Terry EVO IX 58.53

5. Michael EVO IX 58.96

The final results in the Street Class:

1. Chris R32 GTR 58.53

2. Nathan R34 GTR 1:00.10

3. Trent WRX 1:01.69

4. Stuart WRX 1:05.08

2007 AWD Shoot-out was GODZILLA's day. The 80's designed beast was to stand up once again to show its dominance.

See you next year !!

Harry, yeah i just caught news of what happened to Cam's car, a big pity and shame to such a wonderfully built machine. I hope everything gets sorted out fer Cam asap.

Well i guess the debate of the semislicks were mostly on the kumho V700 or V70a, i personally have used these tyres on the track and Craig from Hornibrook Motorsports, who are the kumho distributors had told me they were semislicks. Anyway, wonderful day for the GTRs, even though i guess a number of us had some problems during the event.

The tyre debate is difficult.

The guys who were running those tyres bought them as "Street Legal" which they are and therefore thought in good faith they were running street tyres.

Others see them as street legal semi slicks and therefore race tyres.

So now I have the guys who were not running them telling me they were robbed because the others had semi slicks and I have the guys who purchased street legal tyres saying they were on street tyres and it would be unfair to reclassify them.

So as the rule maker who did not foresee this quandrum (this being the first formal event I have run) I am forced to chose which group of guys I want to hate me.

Paul

Thanks to Paul again for organising such a great event!

This is certainly more enjoyable then the normal track days.

Regarding to the tyre debate, this is really opening a can of worms.

What one might see one particular tyre as a "Semi" others might see them as Street. I'm sure everyone is familar with Falken RT215 tyres, they are infact street tyres but look like semi slicks. And Kumho V700 or V70A are infact semis that look like street tyres.

It all depends on the compound, not tyre pattern.

And also on the race class, Hoosier tyres looks like slicks with 2 shallow cut grooves in them, but they are DOT approve and street legal. So they are classfied as semis.

We have to run a controll tyre event to be fair, but that takes away the fun factor and becoming a bit too serious.

Remember, at the end of the day, we are just out there to enjoy our cars and enjoy driving!!

Yeah, it was a great-fun day, a bit too hot tough.... Congrats to Paul for the successful event, and to the Champ, Micky, such a nice guy! And Baboo, nice guy, NICE car!! always good to catch up with some familiar faces and get to know some new friends.

It's sad to see Cam's car became like that, such a nice-QUIck car..... Just hope Cam's fine, and we all know he will be back. :ninja:

Those hoosiers are street legal and dot approved? Wow those are the semis with the least grooves i have ever seen. Many semislicks are streetlegal here just like the RE55s, which is obviously a semislick, so street legality is probably not a good way to look at categorising the classes, i tend to agree with baboo, compound is the main difference between a semislick and even a high performing street tyre like the RT615, RE070 etc can't be called semislicks simply cuz of the compound difference. Yeah its a hard debate, but hey paul i dont think its yer fault or anything, although it was an event with places to win and all, but its all good fun in the name of motorsports. Most of us aren't professionals and we are just out to enjoy and improve our driving. So cheers to paul fer a wonderful event organised!

How the hell do they classify those hoosiers as semi slicks....twin thin lines and the compound is softer then that in our d11 dunlop full slicks....work that out.

We will be running them shortly :D

The thing is ALL semi slicks are DOT approved and street legal. They could have said that about any semi slick they bought. All of the cars in the race category could have said exactly the same thing.

the rules said anyone on semi slicks would be in the race class, and that's what we expected. Just because they didn't understand the concept of what a semi slick is doesn't mean the rest of the street tyre class should have no chance because 2 guys were running semis in the wrong class. If these two cars made an honest mistake and didn't realise they were purchasing semi slicks, fine. difficult to believe, especially considering one of those cars was stripped out, rollcaged, and had guys crawling all over the tyres with infra red temp guns, and filling out setup sheets with tyre pressure details and everything all day, but if that's their story, fine. I just don't think the rest of the street class competitors shouldn't be the ones to pay for that 'mistake'. They're semi slick tyres and they should have been running in that class, regardless of whether they bought them as street tyres and entered as street class in 'good faith' or not. One of them would have been 4th in the race class anyway. but then there's no prize for 4th hey?

Baboo is right - its about the compound. The Falken Azenis and Federal 595RS are not true semi slicks with treadwear ratings around the 180 mark. They're street tyres that look flash. They are only a very marginal improvement over a normal road tyre which have treadwear ratings around 200-240 in most low profile sizes. The Kuhmo V70a has a much softer compound with a treadwear rating of 50. Most semi slicks have treadwear ratings in the 40-60 range. Yoko AO32R were 60 treadwear. Toyo Proxes RA-01 (which also 'look' like a road tyre, much more so than these Kuhmos that only have 4mm tread depth brand new) are 40 treadwear.

The Kuhmo V70a are now the control race tyre for CAMS Group 3K Saloon Cars (http://www.cams.com.au/bulletins/B07-017%2...-AU%20Tyres.pdf). They previously used the Bridgestone RE55S and now lap quicker on the Kuhmos. Tony Sullens won Targa in a WRX on them a few years ago too.

I have spoken to several experienced motorsport people, including people who have competed in the top levels of the sport. The feeling is that I have acted in the spirit of the sport and so have the guys who had bought street legal tyres for a street event. I will make changes to the rules for the RWD Shoot-out which is coming up in a few months. I will not be commenting any further on this issue.

This thread should be about hailing the skills of the GTR drivers who brought victory to our team, as is the case on the similar thread in the EVO forums for their drivers.

I congratulate you for your victory on the day !!!

All best times have been updated in the sticky thread.

Paul

Classes:

There will be two classes:

Street Cars :- running street tyres only.

Race Cars :- running semi slicks only.

Your tyre type (make and model) must be submitted on application.

Seems perfectly clear to me was that the spirit of the event was that cars on semi slicks would be in one class, and those without semi slicks would be in another. Not all but 2 of them.

All semi slicks are street legal. The question is why do these 2 guys get special treatment and be the only 2 allowed to run semi slicks in the street class?

Either apply your reasoning that semi slicks are street legal equally across the board and reclassify all those on semis as Street class or apply the above rules for the 2 classes equally to all and reclassify these 2 cars that ran semi slicks to the race class.

You can't t run one set of rules for everyone else and another set for these 2 cars.

I was running V70As. I didn't buy them to be in street class, I didn't ask to be in street class. That is just where I was put I assumed to even out the numbers. Either way I don't really care what class I was in or who thinks what about the classes. I ran a PB and that's all that matters to me.

And there were 3 cars running semis in the street class. The WRX next to me bought Dunlop semis for the front of his car when his street tyres died on the first set of laps. So if you run two different types of tyres do you qualify for both classes?

Having said that, a car with no muffler, running semis, and turning up on the back of a trailer in my opinion is a different matter, but as stated above I don't really care. I'm really not sure what the big deal is. We aren't racing for sheep stations.

At the end of the day Paul organised and ran another great event.

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
    • By "reverse flow", do you mean "return flow"? Being the IC having a return pipe back behind the bumper reo, or similar? If so... I am currently making ~250 rwkW on a Neo at ~17-18 psi. With a return flow. There's nothing to indicate that it is costing me a lot of power at this level, and I would be surprised if I could not push it harder. True, I have not measured pressure drop across it or IAT changes, but the car does not seem upset about it in any way. I won't be bothering to look into it unless it starts giving trouble or doesn't respond to boost increases when I next put it on the dyno. FWIW, it was tuned with the boost controller off, so achieving ~15-16 psi on the wastegate spring alone, and it is noticeably quicker with the boost controller on and yielding a couple of extra pounds. Hence why I think it is doing OK. So, no, I would not arbitrarily say that return flows are restrictive. Yes, they are certainly restrictive if you're aiming for higher power levels. But I also think that the happy place for a street car is <300 rwkW anyway, so I'm not going to be aiming for power levels that would require me to change the inlet pipework. My car looks very stock, even though everything is different. The turbo and inlet pipes all look stock and run in the stock locations, The airbox looks stock (apart from the inlet being opened up). The turbo looks stock, because it's in the stock location, is the stock housings and can't really be seen anyway. It makes enough power to be good to drive, but won't raise eyebrows if I ever f**k up enough for the cops to lift the bonnet.
    • There is a guy who said he can weld me piping without having to cut chassis, maybe I do that ? Or do I just go reverse flow but isn’t reverse flow very limited once again?
