Hi all doe's anyone know if a r33 auto computer will run in a stagea?

We were thinking since stageas are soo detuned you could gain by using a 33 auto computer.

Doe's anyone know if this would create any problems or could this quite possibly work?

Both the R34 and R33's have VVT on the intake cam. The difference is the R34 system is infinatly variable in adjustment, where the R33 system is on/off.

However, this doesnt seem to be an issue as Cyrus is running and R34 GTT powerFC in his R33 engined manual converted Stagea.

I dont know if the tiptronic/not argument has much basis either, as the box still works like an auto, essentially they are both the same, with the tiptronic feature being an add-on to the standard auto box....understand what I am trying to say.

Id be curious to see what would happen if someone tried it.

OH, on another note, there are a few sensor changes from R33 to R34, for example R34 RB25DET's have MAP sensors which tell the ecu how much boost the car is running, also a few of the pinouts on the R34 are different to the Stagea, namingly the injectors are on different pins (hence the car wont run plug out/plug in with an R34 ecu)

I was talking to Beastian last night, he said he plugged his R34 PowerFC into his car, and it worked first go with nothing changed. It didn't drive as his car is still auto, but the engine worked. I don't think the injectors are on different pins if this happened

Three of the injectors are definately on different pins, but they are just mixed around with each other, this is why the engine still ran, the injectors would be firing at the wrong time, but the timing is so close, it still ran under no load.

If you drove it like this you would definately notice it.

Also I have found out through someone in the forced induction section, and confirmed it with the R34 service manual and Stagea S2 service manual, that the VCT is basically the same between the R33 and R34, it's ON/OFF. The only difference is the R34 has been designed so it comes on alot more smoothly.

There are a few sensor differences aswell, but from studying the service manuals, they won't make any difference to the running of the engine. I think they are mainly to do with the more intricate R&R mapping that R34's have.

So are you saying you can plug in a R34 GTT Powerfc into the S1 Stagea (auto or manual, it makes no difference if the auto has the MV shift kit), fire it up, and have it dyno tuned, and away you go?

Or is there more to it then just that ?

Definately has to be a manual Brendan, Power FC has no facility or connections to control the auto box unfortunately.

I'll actually be starting my conversion this weekend, and the PFC will be going in afterwards.

I just wanted to plug it in and see what happened, Theres been a bit of talk about the R34 version not being compatible with the S1, and modifications being needed. I knew it would work because Ska's seems to work fine, and I thought I would be the next guinea pig, and work it out for myself. What I have found is very promising, and it's looking alot easier to acheive than first thought.

Once everything is finalised, I will gladly post my findings, and answer any questions.

I'm almost certain, specially after looking at an R33 service manual, that they have a separate Auto trans ECU, unlike the stagea which is incorporated into the engine ECU. Thats the only way it could work.

Maybe it would be possible to put an auto ECU from an R33 into the stagea to control the transmission, and run the engine from a Power FC or such.

More than keen to share my findings mate

I'm pretty sure that I remember reading in an issue of HPI a while back they did a feature on Auto's with MV Automatics. And as well as the shift kits and other internal mods they do for autos they also have a little black box they've made where it bascially takes the control away from the auto ecu and makes it manual. As in it won't shift itself anymore you need to use the auto shifter to change gears (like 1st, 2nd, D = 3rd etc). This would explain what Tangels was saying. If this were the case then it wouldn't matter about using the PFC as long as it can run the motor, you'd just have to get used to changing gears with the auto selector.

    • Im not entirely sure exactly what or where its leaking from, he started to pull the boots to swap to my new tie rods + ends and it just vomited fluid, so he closed em up up, swapped the rod ends to the old rods and let me know so I can figure a solution out, im guessing its all origional as as I passed 103k miles earlier this year im sure its just in need of a full overhual/rebuild anyways.    If i could just yank it off and be good it wouldn't be an issue to ship it out and wait for the turnaround but the guy I work with doesnt really have space to keep my car for a week or two at a time, would rather drop it off and have a replacement ready to drop in
    • What do you mean by "seals"? Internal hydraulic seals (ie, is it leaking PS fluid?) or the rack boots that close the rack onto the tie-rods? Because the former is a rebuild, and the latter is trivial that you or any nearby mechanic could do. Dunno about the cowl. Just buy what you think is required and get anything else you find/break afterwards. Wing? Dunno. Don't like R33s enough to pay attention to them. Mirror glass is just glass (on the surface that you want to polish). Go for it.
    • Hello! Long time lurker, been using the forums to address concerns and questions from afar for a while but I've struggled to find some answers so I guess its about time I made an account and formally asked some more knowledgeable people, since finding local skyline owners is hard (and shops that are knowledgeable or trustworthy to work on 'rare' cars are non existent out where im at, as skylines are quite uncommon to find in the wild around here). So the main 3 questions I have, 1: Steering rack has blown seals, well.. they kind of hold but they are not sealed properly anymore and as my R33 is my DD, i cant exactly rip the rack out and send it off or attempt to fix myself. As most refurb ones are around $1,100 or more shipped, and I have other things I need to work on around the car, I was seeking clarification on whether an S15 rack will more or less bolt right in, and whether a common mechanic could do any other required work to get it to fit. I ask, as I've found a supplier than can sell a manufactured as oem one for around 400, if not I'll likely order a used one from Jacks JDM, and take a risk on the seals there. The second question i have is that im replacing the front wiper cowl and have planned to buy 4 new clips and a new center clip but wasnt sure if there were any other clips that would also need to get replaced while I was at it. Given im sure any that are there now will simply break when I remove the old cowl... Last thing would be a fairly straight forward question, i think. If I manage (strong if, finding one has proven to be a pain) to find a R33 GTR spoiler/wing will it require much modification to bolt to a S2 R33 GTST? I've read the bolt patterns dont match but otherwise would bolt in, only options I have found with much luck is China stuff on ebay and carbonetics, which has a nice $650 shipping fee... so if anyone has any pointers where a US chap could locate one that would be great Random side question as well, the mirrors as I understand are mirror glass, and as im planning to polish my windows from water spots and surface scratches, i was hopeful cerium oxide would be fine for them too, as my research points to, but clarification is always nice. Any pointers would be appreciated, and while I have scoured the internet for answers if I missed a prior post somewhere that may answer these directly please point me towards it, as i must have simply missed it. I have seen a post here or there that has mentioned it, but I usually get 50-50 answers, or half answers... I dont have a lot of fab experience or mechanic experience, outside of hydraulic and pneumatic stuff I did in the military and with how hard it is to source stuff in the US, id rather not wing it and hemmoraghe money lol. Thanks guys! Sorry for the monumental first post haha
    • Yep, there's a very minor drift left that happens a few seconds after letting go of the steering wheel, but not enough to bother me. Enjoying the car still!
