Okay guys,

I'm getting misfiring under load while on boost, and I fear it's pinging also, I've never heard pinging before, but it's very faint and hard to hear over the pod's sucking noise.

My question is,

How do I use a timing light to check the timing degree's ?

there is three connectors coming out of my timing light...

One set goes to the battery,

One is the inductive pickup

the other is an alligator clip which used to go somewhere on the coil in my old-old car

my question is: where do I connect these on the skyline ?

It's a 1995 model, so it doesn't have the large ignitor module at the top-back of the plug covers. it just has two electrical connectors together. Do I clip in on the entire loom, or one wire in that bunch ?

How do i tell what the base timing is? in Degrees ? The main cranky thing has (i think) 5 notches marked on it, the far left is yellow and the other 4-5 are white. how do i line these up and retard-advance timing ? what's the deal ?

any help would be greatly appreciated :P

I usually do it in the following manner:

- take that u shaped hose off (the one sitting on top of the covers at the front of the engine)

- unscrew the first 4 allan bolts on the plastic cover, that hides the coil packs

- lift cover witha flat head screwdriver

- put u shaped hosw back on

- use the inductive pickup on the wire going to coil pack #1

after adjusting your timing, just put it all back the way it was.....

Also make sure your revs are at 650 when doing the timing, and when you have set the timing..... Use the screw on the drivers side of the plunum , right at the back, facing out the side of the car...

clockwise to decrease revs, anti clockwise to increase.

the first mark is 0 deg. Each subsequent mark is another 5 deg. Nissan recomends you set your timing to 15 deg (which would be the third white mark).

I usually set mine to 17 or 18. I can get it that far with very little pinging, but not past 18. Like I said, make sure the revs are also at 650rpm.... it will change as you advance/retard timing.

Hope this helps

    • Yes the gear for the R33/34 is different, it is red and has a different number of teeth. My part didn't come with that gear though, so I don't know how many teeth are on the red one. You'd have to reuse the 260RS/R33 gear, as long as it's not destroyed.   Haha, as unfortunate as that might be it was working fine for about the first 1500km I've had the car for now.
    • Update all   thanks to the workshop manual, it lead me back to checking fuses as mentioned central locking and door open lights worked when acc was switched on. diagram attached shows two points of power 1. ACC and 2.  Batt with the later being fused (#28) I did check the fuses using a multimeter but I must have stuffed that up also. Went back and checked the batt fuse in interior fuse box and you wouldn’t believe it… a blown fuse. replaced fuse and everything is now working as it should including the climate control   thank you all with your positive insight and knowledge.
    • Where is the warning "That this thread is super old"   I just went into a 5 year old thread, went to do a reply, and couldn't see anywhere obvious a warning of it being super old
    • Duncan is correct. Pitwork (and Toyota's own cheap brand "Drive Joy") were primarily created as brands to sell other manufacturers car parts. It would be weird if Nissan sold parts for Toyota vehicles with a Nissan logo on it, so they created Pitwork to sell parts for other brans Toyota, Honda etc. They are not the same as Nissan genuine parts, although they *do* meet Nissan's standards for replacement parts. They aren't supposed to be a substitute for genuine parts, but a cheaper alternative that is better than Ebay fake parts from you-know-where.
