Hi all i thought that i would start my own thread on shimming of the differential for skylines.in particular the R33gtst.though any input is appreciated.

Could you give me some insight as to how it's performance was/is and what size shims you used.I am doing the sau drift day,am really in need of an lsd,but shimmig is the only way for me to go due to cost atm,and i only have a vauge idea on what shim size to go for.Basically all shim sizes ive been told about and their results are from nissansilvia.com.and they are all different cars IE:silvia's,180's etc..

I would rather a real world skyline point of veiw...

Here is the link to my diy thread for diy:r33 gtst diff shimming

Well ive ordered a 1.3mm and 1.4mm shims havent decided which one to throw in with the stock 0.8mm shim yet.but the good news is that its on its way.

The bad news is that its due arrival date is dangerously close to the sau drift weekend.ie: that week. :?

0.80mm = 3842440f60 price = $10.12

0.85mm = 3842440f62 price = $14.67

0.90mm = 3842440f63 price = $9.97

1.01mm = 3842440f67 price = $9.79

1.05mm = 3842440f68 price = $14.40

1.10mm = 3842440f70 price = $6.37

1.20mm = 3842440f73 price = $6.37

1.30mm = 3842440f76 price = $10.89

1.40mm = 3842440f80 price = $6.37

1.49mm = 3842440f83 price = $6.37

what size shim did you throw in?

Ive read on d1nz forums that the diff can be shimmed on both sides.If what you are saying is true then i believe you may require one either side.

There are others on there who have said their lsd had been going strong for more than a year with only having the shim on one side.

Ok well i followed that D1NZ site i bought ONE .8mm diff shim, opened my diff up and slapped it in as per the D1NZ site...put it all back together and it was harder to put the center back into the housing, maybe cos the shim made the whole centre .8mm thicker, if you go any bigger you might have to take it to a diff lapper and get them to make sure the backlash is set right so you dont snap teeth of the pinion gear. But seriously the diff shim in my 32 only lasted like 2 weeks and now its back to the way it always was...i think the shim just wears out really fast cos the center isnt suppose to have that much tension. I read that there is another shim on the other side but i never seen that part, and everyone that has shimmed their diff only ever does the one side.

I can confirm that it will only last for a matter of weeks/months.

I shimmed mine 2 months ago and it starting to open wheel on tight corners under hard throttle.

it is coming out and a 2 way LSD is going in soon :(

Thanks for the reply.

I now am having my reservations about going through all that effort just to have it return to shit..Plus

i was going to throw in a bigger shim.1.3mm on top of the 0.8mm.

Really,i will see what i can do.It will be so close to drift day that i will be getting shim annyway that if anything goes wrong and i need a pro to fix it i will be up shit creek.

What kind of timeframe am i looking at in and out by myself?and is there anything that i should know about taking the hicas out and reinstalling it.any unforeseable problems that i might encounter?

Regards

Craig.

I looked into this a while ago for my car and the place I spoke to said they could do it but it would go bad again soon. So there's confirmation I guess.

I'm selling my Nismo 1 way in a few days... fits in r33's not sure about R32.

Has anyone had one stay tight, after hard driving AND daily driving? I've read the D1NZ forum, and one guy reckons He CAN'T get his to loosen up! I'm wondering if the guys who's Diffs stay tight after the mod are using Redline or something, to stop wear?

And can anyone confirm, or deny that there's a 0.8mm shim BOTH sides from factory?

Thanks.

that i do not know.yet!but if i can i will get a pic of the other side of the diff if it is not a task to do it.Though i and waldo have read that there is definently one on the other side.The diff oil i am using to refill it with is penrite.

spent up on the gearbox oil though.Penrite 10tenths @ $60 per 2.5l and i bought 2 of them.with a 20% discount card.yeah baby!so far through the week i have noticed remarkably smoother gear changes.Needs to be warmed up before getting into it though.

Atm the diff is on the garage floor.i will pull it apart tomorrow when daylight graces.

Happy easter.

Sweeet - thanks dude - 'coz I'm thinking, if there's Two 0.8mm shims from factory, I'll replace them with Two 1.4mm shims, - that'll keep everything nice and centered, and clamp it a total of 1.2mm tighter - about middle of the road, compared to what everyone else has done on the D1NZ forum.

Have good Eastering ! :wave:

Hey mate.I can confirm that they do have 2 shims one either side.i have pics of them.

On mine it had allready been swapped on one side for a 1.1 shim and still had the stock one in there on the opposite side.

Trust me it will take you 30sec to get at the outer side once you have the inner side in front of you.

What i have done is take the stock 0.8mm shim which was more like a 0.711 shim (worn).and added that to the other side allong with the new 1.4 shim.And threw the 1.1 shim (more like 1.0) on the other side.

Am going to fit the diff tomorrow.it should work well.2.1-2 on one side and 1.0-1 =3.1-3.

I've done one of my VLSD's.

General low speed driving I didn't like how it unsettled the rear as I could feel the spider gears binding and then letting go on low speed corners so wobble wobble around round abouts. :thumbsup:

Straight line acceleration it made no improvement, single spinner.

Corner exit it was excellent, always twin wheeled and sent the car all crossed up nicely.

So this bodgy mod isn't for any one who is chasing a little more straight line grip from their tired VLSD.

If you want improved corner exit grip or drift then the shim does work well.

I used an extra 0.8mm shim.

With a little more preload I think mine would have acted much like a locker, so it 'may' have improved straight line acceleration but most likely not.

Also.. ~1000-2000km's the clunking etc will dissapear as the spider gears wear, I noticed the locking affect also diminishes slightly lol :)

There's absolutely no benefit of doing this, it being centered doesn't matter.

I could only get the shims from nissan.

Well i drove it this afternoon.

And can safely say that it is virtually a locked diff.Seen as though i have never driven a car with a locked diff,only ever been a passenger in one,i can safely say that this is going to work well for drifting.

Reversing out the driveway was new to me.chip,chip,chip...

    • Hey keep the ideas coming, I'm always keen on projects! But, problem fixed!  I got a cheapie ozito scope from Bunnings and had a good look in and around the bearing and sensor hole. I couldn't see a smoking gun but the bearing looked a bit strange, especially when comparing with a new one. I thought the cover had come off the bearing magnets.  Sorry for pics of a screen, I didn't have an SD card.     Good thing I had the old one to inspect. So, given I'm like a pit crew with wheel bearings and luckily I had a spare bearing because I f**ked up my parts order, I decided to just smash it out. Got the old one out in about an hour. So much easier when the parts haven't had a chance to rust together yet. 😂 And, well, found the problem.    In the second pic at about the 8 o'clock position, you'll see what I think is the tip of the old sensor.  The new sensor has definitely been rubbing but it's all intact, just a little shiny so I'm hoping it's fine.  The car brakes perfectly now and no errors.  I think the job took about 2.5h in the end. 👍🏻 I really appreciate the help in here as usual. Thanks guys.
    • I was only looking because I saw some drops on the ground but it wasn't alot. Recently had it serviced will ask the mech to confirm. Find it strange that it looks standard though, can see in another photo of a random box
    • So...not sure if you know if that has always been there or why you went looking. It could be old damage from a clutch explosion, or even just the gearbox got dropped somewhere along the line. Basically, you should seal it up to stop oil and dust getting into the bellhousing, but it doesn't matter too much and is not structural. I'd suggest something like a glob of JB Weld. BTW what gearbox oil are you running, I would guess the breather has been spewing it everywhere.
    • Hey Duncan thanks for your reply. Sorry mate I know the photos are shit.  Took another photo for reference. Seems the casing does have a hole in it looking on the net, fluid seeping out. Added a photo
    • Very hard to make out what you mean, is it the squarish hole with redline shockproof (probably) under it? Is that pic from on top of the engine with the firewall to the left of pic and engine to the right? Either way, spray the area liberally with degreaser and try again, maybe circle the part you are worried about
