A Sydney doctor escaped from his burning BMW after two carjackers posing as police robbed him, locked him in the boot and torched the car.

The 34-year-old obstetrician was on his way to a north Sydney hospital after receiving a call-out at about 3.15am (AEDT) on Monday when the incident occurred, police said.

The Forestville man was sitting in his black BMW sedan at the intersection of West and Falcon streets, in Crows Nest, when two men who claimed to be police pulled alongside and asked him to stop.

After the doctor pulled over, the two men approached the car and again said they were police.

But when the doctor asked to see some identification, the men removed the keys from the ignition and pulled him from the driver's seat.

NSW Police Detective Inspector Peter Houlahan, crime manager of the Harbourside Local Area Command, said the doctor was hit in the stomach with a hammer before having his wallet, his mobile phone and his watch taken.

The two men also demanded the doctor's credit card, key cards and personal identification numbers, Det Insp Houlahan told reporters.

He said the doctor was then forced into the boot of his car.

"All he recalls is the car being driven for a period of time, stopping on a couple of occasions, and then shortly after 4am (AEDT) this morning he felt the vehicle come to a halt," Det Insp Houlahan said.

"He heard a click in the boot area and he heard someone call out: 'Get out of the car'.

"When he pushed the boot up he found his car engulfed in flames."

The doctor told police he did not unlock the boot himself, and it appeared the man's captors unlocked it before fleeing, Det Insp Houlahan said.

He said the man, who could not see the offenders when he escaped the burning vehicle, raised the alarm at a house in the riverfront suburb of Linley Point where the car was dumped.

Police believe the two offenders made purchases and cash withdrawals using the stolen cards before they abandoned the vehicle, and officers are conducting inquiries and reviewing CCTV footage.

The man was "very distraught" and tired after the attack, and was anxious to get home and see his wife and two young daughters, Det Insp Houlahan said.

He could only provide police with a vague description of his captors, but said the men were both caucasian males aged in their 20s, and that one of them was about six feet tall (183cm) with short blond hair and medium build.

The man was "extremely lucky" to have escaped without serious injury, Det Insp Houlahan said.

"The fact that it appears they popped the boot may take the edge off the offence itself but, quite honestly, it's a very serious offence and the consequences are very severe," Det Insp Houlahan said.

"This type of crime is quite unusual for this country, particularly in this area, so it is quite worrying."

man that is weird. they went to all that trouble just for his wallet, mobile and watch? oh and dude, if i was you id be even more careful if the car did indeed have " DA POLICE" on the side. just a heads up

That woul dmake you think twice about stopping for an unmarked police car. seriously. Or lock all of the doors, wind the window a few cm's and ask for their ID first.

    • Wrong question. There's no point in spending the rather large sum of cash and effort to add turbo, without taking it to the "sensible" limit of the motor itself. If you have to upgrade injectors, etc, then so be it. That is a tiny fraction of what it will cost you to turbo it.
    • Measure voltage at the starter solenoid terminal when the key is at start and it has clicked. If it is really low, then the suspicion falls on the ignition switch (contacts or wiring thereof) as causing a voltage drop instead of sending enough volts to throw the solenoid all the way to engage the starter itself. If it is a decent voltage, then the suspicion is on the solenoid. Might have s horted coil, or might hva dirty contacts. Rip the starter off, dismantle, clean up contacts and inspect winding. It might not be possible to see if there is a short in the winding though. I have a spare starter here that I could measure the resistance of the coil, as a guide to about what it should be, if you need a comparison. <parts hoarder>No you cannot have it.</parts hoarder>

    • Absolutely matters because, while a temperature change will eventually reach a sensor at the end of a static line, the response time is far far far too slow to be useful. Might as well not have a temp gauge at all.
    • When I was eyeing off the 370GT (after deciding I didn't want to spend 30-40k+ to relive my early 20s in an R33) I thought it'd be a good project to add a turbo to it. Now that I have a 370GT, and I've had a couple of chances to open it up, I'm pretty stunned by how much power it makes 🫠 Honestly, the way the VVEL opens it up, it almost feels like there's a little turbo tucked away in there somewhere. It's like Nissan looked at VTEC and said "hold my beer" 😁 Has anyone thrown a turbo into their 370Z or 370GT? Is there a conservative boost level you can run without having to upgrade the fuel system, or are bigger injectors and a bigger pump a given?
