The amount of ignition you can push in really depends on mods.

For a dead stock R33 it may be possible to push in 4-5degree's on BP98, one running 12psi it may not be.

Which is why its so important to do it on a dyno.

As for checking for ping. I found the best way for myself was in third and fourth up against a guard rail. Its still difficult to hear so be very very carefull. The stock ecu only provides 'some' protection under 4500rpm, over that and it will allow you to detonate the motor to death.

Varying conditions also can induce ping that was not otherwise present. Give it a really icy night and it may very well ping where it wasn't on the usual 25degree day.

Ok so I've the regular bolt ons, exhaust, pod, fmic, 10-12psi. Does that mean I can't push the timing as far?

For the sake of a trying to get another 5rwkw throw it on the dyno to be sure all is ok when pushing up the ign. timing.

Its not worth a 3-5k rebuild.

I see your point. Dyno's aren't cheap around my area ($100 for a power run). Better safe than sorry.

So even advancing it say 2-3 degree's is not a good idea to do at home?

well, the thing is, 2-3 degrees might very well not be. If for some reason, you have a high compression motor (e.g. an N/A) motor, it will probably ping. Or if you have bad fuel etc etc.

It's just really hard to listen for ping while you're driving the thing. On the dyno, they can listen out for it, while standing next to the car with the bonnet open - can't do that while driving

If you run something like shell v power racing, you can probably knock a fair bit of timing in. It'll have more power, more torque, quicker spool, better response.

People normally increase it till it pings slightly, then back it off a little.

I forgot where, but htere was a place that had dynos for $80 an hour.
