hi all,

been having some problems with me r33 gtst. On idle it wont hunt at all (revs stay about 1000rpm tho), but as im driving and put it into neutral to come to an intersection it starts bouncing between 400-1500rpm (sometimes stalling), it only does this after its had load applied to it. I've tried to search and found a thread or two but i did the things they said to do, but nothing helped,I've tried:

- spark plugs, all good, gapped at 0.8mm

- acc valve, was dirty and cleaned it out

- throttle body cleaned out

- spray contact cleaner on most connections

- borrow some1 elses afm, no difference

- checked for weird noises but nothing

- checked all hoses and pipes, for vacc leaks

- checked charcoal canister

- cleaned out BOV

- regrounded fuel pump (inside the boot)

mods on my car are:

Garrett gt2535, stock ecu with SAFC, full exhaust, blitz pod, cooler, turbotech b.c, sard FPR, catch can

got the car dynod at pretty much 200rwkw (which i thought it would be higher) and tuner couldn't find the problem as he ran out of time to find it.

could any1 with a similar problem help me out?? or even throw ideas at me so i can check it

also i might have forgotten some things i've tried so if i remember, i'll do an edit

take it back to him it needs to be more finely tuned with the dec. air thingo on the safc... your cars acting like its got a atmo bov on it.. stalling n shit or its blocked off and its stalling cos the turbo is generating more air and pressure and its over fueling.

yer i will, but the only thing was that this problem started happening a few weeks after i got it tuned, it didnt happen straight away as i drove out, thats y im looking at other things rather than the safc..

do u remember what had to be adjusted on the safc??

Air leak. Same issue on another R33 and it was the charcoal canister leaking. When it's doing it you can get a pair of pliers and block the vac line that goes to the canister. If the idle settles then there is your problem. After you have found your issue, you can sit back and have a beer, look at what you have achieved and be glad with yourself. Or not.

Problem might not be canister but I'm betting air leak somewhere......the tuning suggestion is not likely but still can happen.

Coils? and plus if its been tuned how rich is the tune as well?

havnt had probs with the coils at all, they were cleaned out with the dremel and siliconed over a year ago and never had dramas, unsure on how rich the tune is too, i'll suss out the coil tomorrow tho

Same issue on another R33 and it was the charcoal canister leaking

i'll give that a go as well tomorrow

thanks heaps guys, keep these ideas coming in i'll go as many parts as i need to

in regards to the air leak theory that happened to me and was a leaking vac line been too loose (charcoal canister) thats another thing as well to consider 1 point zip ties are your friend on that issue it helped me, but i had an issue as well with my tune which is now thankfully sorted thank god. but a major on this issue is air leak somewhere. Good luck with it all

^ hes cleaned the aac value and even changed afms..

i cleaned my afm, and it didnt help at all..

For my 100k service, i got a enviro service done, which basically cleans injectors, throtle body, fuel lines etc etc.. With carby stuff..

That helped my idle issues by 75%.. Actually for the first two weeks the idle was perfect!! then after that, it only does it sometimes (on a really hot day ie. hunts around 500-700 at most)

Maybe give that a go.. Plus it will make you car healthy and its good to clean out all the crap that comes out of your engine!! esp if the car is ike 10 years old

Otherwise go back to the tuner, and see if he can fine tune the safc once aagin..

gdluck n let us know what happens..

AFM needs cleaning

already wrote that at my 1st post, and changed it.

siddr20: i'll have a look into this, i got injector cleaner at home so i might slap that into the tank 2day

damn rb25's, there too hard to work out problems like this, any1 else with an idea?

like others have already said it sounds like the engine is fuelling up too much

i'm guessing the higher you rev the engine then let it drop bak to idle the further it dips below idle speed and hunts up and down, it most likely stalls when the engine is cold. correct?

best get the tuner back onto it

yep dobz that exactly wot its doing, i've pretty much narrowed it down to the tune &/or timing now as well. i grounded the feul pump right after it comes out into the boot (read this on a thread last night) and cleaned out my stock BOV, and no difference

i will go see the tuner this tuesday, also i put a metal intake on a few weeks ago (ditched the old rubber one) , i cant c that being a prob tho, is it?

Edited by tigr33
just a question is the stock bov plumbed back into the intake with the new pipe?

no, the stock pipes are used, just cut slightly shorter so i could fit hose over both pipes to join it onto the intake, i've checked the connection and the hose was a tight fit so it wouldnt be leaking

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
