Hey forum I just have a couple question about boost spiking, all help is appreciated. I hooked up an ebc on my friends stock gtst r33. Now only mods are the ebc and a pod everything else stock. I set it for lo boost 10psi and hi boost 12psi.

1. When the car accelerates should it not be boosting up to 10 psi as long as you are on the throttle not all the way but accelerating? I get the 10 psi but it doesn't hold it as long as i feel it should it just gets there and then starts to fluctuate.

2. The ebc has a warn function to limit boost when spiking, which i set to 15psi. It activates this function. Not on accelerating but I feel on gear changes. The ebc has a boost guage as well and it doesn't read 15psi at all. Took the car on a run to test the settings and the highest i saw during the driving is 10.4 but it also has a last and peak function that allow to view the highest boost ever recorded and the last boost you did before turning the car off when looking at that I see where the car did 16.4psi but I did not see it during the run. What do u feel is the cause of this I told him to get a full turbo back exhaust and he would see the boost remain constant. I was also thinking to just set the controller at a higher warn function to stop the spiking feature seeing as its only during the gear changes. Was i correct?

what ebc is it.

If it is a gizzmo and you are spiking, your responce is set to high, this will couse exactly what you are discribing.

A free flowing exhaust doesn't fix boost spike, it actually makes it worse. As the exhaust is free, and it's easier for the gas to go through turbo then the wastgae, and hence spiking.

Do a search for WogsRus as author and Gizzmo as topic, i have posted a few replies for simmilar problems.

No its P.I.T Boost control unit. Ill try to explain it better, doesn't spike when Im driving it spikes on the gear changes and that activates the warn function and it doesnt hold boost i have seen it get to the desired setting of 10 psi but it doesnt hold it, the minute it gets there say around 4000 rpm it immediately drops off to stock boost numbers and thats in third and fourth gear. I was figuring that it was suppose to hold boost on acceleration from about 3500rpm to around 5000rpm or so, the stock boost guage is constant but the reading on the ebc fluctuates. Any one has any suggestions

You installed an EBC on a stock car?

Not the smartest thing i've heard of :)

You ideally need to get a full exhaust. Your trying to force more air though something that already has problems, and your just adding to it.

It sounds to me like you have a couple problems. The setup of the boost controller being the main one, thats if the EBC is even working correctly.

Its time for you to go an see a professional i think

Yea you are right but if that is what the man wants to do I'll assist anyway I can.

Yeah true point, tell him to help himself and get an exhaust :nyaanyaa:

What do the EBC instructions have about it all?

LOL lol lmao :laughing-smiley-014: thats the first thing I told him to do cause I made the same mistake, but you know how it goes first thing you want to do with a turbo is up the boost. Got hit with the more power bug I guess. THe instructions in the book are that it tells you to set the start boost function which is the boost at which the waste gate begins to open which they say should b set before the destination psi to avoid over boosting, have that set to 7psi, and then the gain function which activates how quickly or slowly the gate opens 100% fastest 1% lowest which I set to 48% I think. After a few trial and errors is how I got the numbers anything over 7 for the start boost on the low boost side and the ebc's boost guage goes above 10 at 7 once you are accelerating I saw it get to 10 but never above a couple a times. But it does spike cause I have the warn set at 15 psi and it activates. Like I stated earlier I never see it during a run but when i look at the peak and last boost its there plain as day so I figure it has to be that surge during gear changes. What do u think?

For the stock turbo on a gtst, i don't see why people even bother using an ebc. If you get a full exhaust and fmic, boost will increase a bit already. mine was running about 9psi with just those mods.

then i put in an r32 waste gate actuator, and boost went up to 11-12ish psi. no spiking, bolts straight on, looks stock, boost drops off less at the top end.

if you need one, i've got a spare one. i'd just sell the ebc off, because you can't really run more boost than the 32 actuator anyways on the stock turbo

    • If it (the code) wasn't still current, it should have gone away by itself by now. No, nothing it 10/10. But it is quite likely. Everything else to do with the ignition could still be responsible (which is wires and connectors). The car is an old piece of shit now, so all the wires and connectors are also old pieces of shit.

    • Before I get to the test day, just to finish off the android head unit. This is a demo from car start up....the standard/host system takes a few seconds to boot (same as all v37) but Android comes up quickly. In this vid I'm using the delivered launcher but have set the default to Agami since which is easier to navigate when if use primarily 5 apps. You can see the host system still takes over when required eg putting it in reverse, and you can switch between Android and not by holding the back button 3 sec. It is pretty responsive (fast) but you can see I had to press harder than expected a couple of times.  I still have the phone connected to the stock system, and that also seamlessly takes over Android music playing. v37-android-demo.mp4 The bigger reason that I put this in though is so that I can use Ecutek directly on the head unit. That gives me a dash with logging (up to 20MB only), high and low value warnings on any parameter etc etc. I've run a USB cable from the Ecutek OBD dongle to a USB input on the unit, easy. v37-ecutek-demo.mp4   The unit did freeze on the launcher the other day, I think Agami was trying to verify the license when it didn't have a data connection...will monitor and report back if there are any other problems but so far I'm very happy with the upgrade.
