Hi fellas,

Need some advise on the following.

I was driving home one night and suddently, I heard a rubbing sound - sounded like something was rubbing really close to my front tyres (the right-hand side to be exact), so I stepped out to have a look, and too my astonishment, the black hard plastic front-wheel guard thing that separates the wheels from the front bumper has broken off and hence is rubbing onto the wheel.

Now, I got two options, 1) to remove this and let it be hollow - but it looks really weird if you standing on the right-hand side of the car and if you look towards the front-bar from the wheels's view you can see all the wires and things holding the front bar together... or 2) find a replacement for this as my current one is broken to shreds due to wear and tear. This happen to anyone before?

Now I got two questions - 1) if I leave it hollow like this for the time-being, does it affect the mechanics/eletronics of the car at all? As I fear water may splash onto the wiring etc of the front bar. 2) If I want to get a replacement, where do I get one and how much would it most likely cost?

I don't know what the above guard-piece is called so I got some pictures, hope you guys can help. Anyone have an old one laying around I can buy off you?

Many thanks,

i had the same problem on the left side.

a cat started running along side me on the footpath as i was driving slowly down a 50km/h street, and naturally, after i second of him keeping up with me, i knew the little prick was going to cross the road, and that he did... i hit the skids...Bang... straight under the front left wheel... so i turn around to go investigate...cat is flattened.

anyhow, i hear this flapping as i turn out on to the next main road, and then another bang... plastic guard crushed straight under both front left rear left tyres... doh!

i have just left it bare for the last 6 months, and the stock side mount intercooler is visible.

True about your concern with electrics however (as none are visible on the left side for myself [maybe because of the intercooler being there].

Try and source one from a wreckers. id estimate a cost of anything between 50-150, even though its literally a moulded piece of plastic!

Cheers bro,

may thanks, apprecite really do.

well, just an update. took my car to Nismo performance centre in Sunshine VIC. they said they couldn't do anything, so actually took a day off work to go and see if i can find a replacement at some nearby wreckers. nothing, apparently (for those that will encounter this later in their lives) Skylines front mudflat thingy's are kinda curvier and more pushed in than other cars, say a Ford falcon or a Toyota camry, so I was stuck up the creek. The bloke says, mate, when another of your skyline brothers gets involved in an accident and sells his wreck to us, which I don't think it will be long, i'll call you and you can come and pick up some parts. i didn't find that quite amusing, but anyways, I then had enough and decided to salvage what i got.

jacked up my beast, got under it and with the use of a drill, some plastic nails (or whatever they're called) i basically pinned it on again, didn't a fairly good job actually. i then used some cable-ties to squeez in some vital holding points, so now my beast is all stiched up again.

don't know about you guys, but i can't just let my beast sit on my front lawn without his undies on. lol.

thanks all again.

ps: damn, did you have cat-remains on your tyres? or is this too graphic to discuss here. lol

Same thing happened to me, I had my plastic guard thingy thats underneath the engine got ripped out as well as i spun out at a track day. Ive just left it as it is.

Mine's 34 gtr doesnt have the plastic guard thingy underneath the fenders too, so that the car can be lowered more. I havent heard of anyone not using the plastic guard underneath the engine before tho. :D

My drivers side and the one under the engine, both described to me as splash guards have been ripped off :). I too am looking for these parts. I suppose i could order them from Nissan spare parts, anyone have the part numbers or FAST to check the numbers?

Ps the drivers side ripped off today, cant say im happy about it.

cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

had mine in when i bought the car but one came out about 2 months later on the freeway at speed and almost took out the poor rider on the motorbike that was cruzin with/behind me .I heard a noise under the car looked up into the rear veiw to see the guard almost take him out! thank f@# he was quick enough to duck it so i just pulled the other out. Safer had an after market front bar at the time n the front clips had no where to go. Still havent replaced them yet and its caused me no dramas. & Owned the car for almost 4.5 years however i dont have exposed wires under there?? you can just see the outlet piping from the front mount if wheels are turned out to the right no biggie. what purpose do the wires in question serve ??

ha ha ha ha... "nearly too him out..." yeah, imagine that - the cops may say: "you realise son that you could have killed someone if your front wheelguards?" You may reply: "yeah, I guess so what would you charge me with - killing people with my wheelguards?" ha ha ha ... just thought for ya,....

Anyways, I've got mine fixed by myself, had to get under the car and really do a lot of work to get it reattached but finally it's all good again, thank god.

Mate - these wires are for the front indicators - as you know I got some the GT-R bumper so yeah... but all good now... I think it would be better as the water directly from the wheels would not splash straight onto the front things.

Go to the wreckers - that was going to be my next step - the should charge no more than $40.00 or something.

Ripped off? By whom or did it just happen due to wear & tear?

Don't bother trying Nissan dealers in Australia - they do not deal with imports and stay well away from them for some reason.

Anyways, your best bet are wreckers or look on the sales - parts section of our forum.

Good luck... gotta say, it looks so naked and wierd without these frontwheel/splash guards - you agree?

Doing about 90Kp/h on the highway :(. Yeah it looks kinda odd, but i guess at least you cant see the cable ties holding it on anymore :P, or the hole from rubbing on the tyre. Im more worried about the "splash tray" under the engine that i ripped off on a curb.

Usually if you can give them the part number they will at least try to find it for you, at least the Nissan dealership in Broome does.

cheers

LOL, no cat-remains spunky! it did however put a slight dent in the botton of my smic! still good though, no leaks!

it (the cat) wasnt a pretty scene... the poor bugger had a perfect 225/50 width of body flatness between his front and rear legs... basically ran him over flush in the stomach! i did feel quite bad knowing someones going to wake up the next day, not being able to find his/her cat, then cruising out the next day and seeing their it pancaked on the side of the road!

    • This. As for your options - I suggest remote mounting the Nissan sensor further away on a length of steel tube. That tube to have a loop in it to handle vibration, etc etc. You will need to either put a tee and a bleed fitting near the sensor, or crack the fitting at the sensor to bleed it full of oil when you first set it up, otherwise you won't get the line filled. But this is a small problem. Just needs enough access to get it done.
    • The time is always correct. Only the date is wrong. It currently thinks it is January 19. Tomorrow it will say it is January 20. The date and time are ( should be ! ) retrieved from the GPS navigation system.
    • Buy yourself a set of easy outs. See if they will get a good bite in and unthread it.   Very very lucky the whole sender didn't let go while on the track and cost you a motor!
    • Well GTSBoy, prepare yourself further. I did a track day with 1/2 a day prep on Friday, inpromptu. The good news is that I got home, and didn't drive the car into a wall. Everything seemed mostly okay. The car was even a little faster than it was last time. I also got to get some good datalog data too. I also noticed a tiny bit of knock which was (luckily?) recorded. All I know is the knock sensors got recalibrated.... and are notorious for false knock. So I don't know if they are too sensitive, not sensitive enough... or some other third option. But I reduced timing anyway. It wasn't every pull through the session either. Think along the lines of -1 degree of timing for say, three instances while at the top of 4th in a 20 minute all-hot-lap session. Unfortunately at the end of session 2... I noticed a little oil. I borrowed some jack stands and a jack and took a look under there, but as is often the case, messing around with it kinda half cleaned it up, it was not conclusive where it was coming from. I decided to give it another go and see how it was. The amount of oil was maybe one/two small drops. I did another 20 minute session and car went well, and I was just starting to get into it and not be terrified of driving on track. I pulled over and checked in the pits and saw this: This is where I called it, packed up and went home as I live ~20 min from the track with a VERY VERY CLOSE EYE on Oil Pressure on the way home. The volume wasn't much but you never know. I checked it today when I had my own space/tools/time to find out what was going on, wanted to clean it up, run the car and see if any of the fittings from around the oil filter were causing it. I have like.. 5 fittings there, so I suspected one was (hopefully?) the culprit. It became immediately apparent as soon as I looked around more closely. 795d266d-a034-4b8c-89c9-d83860f5d00a.mp4       This is the R34 GTT oil sender connected via an adapter to an oil cooler block I have installed which runs AN lines to my cooler (and back). There's also an oil temp sensor on top.  Just after that video, I attempted to unthread the sensor to see if it's loose/worn and it disintegrated in my hand. So yes. I am glad I noticed that oil because it would appear that complete and utter catastrophic engine failure was about 1 second of engine runtime away. I did try to drill the fitting out, and only succeeded in drilling the middle hole much larger and now there's a... smooth hole in there with what looks like a damn sleeve still incredibly tight in there. Not really sure how to proceed from here. My options: 1) Find someone who can remove the stuck fitting, and use a steel adapter so it won't fatigue? (Female BSPT for the R34 sender to 1/8NPT male - HARD to find). IF it isn't possible to remove - Buy a new block ($320) and have someone tap a new 1/8NPT in the top of it ($????) and hope the steel adapter works better. 2) Buy a new block and give up on the OEM pressure sender for the dash entirely, and use the supplied 1/8 NPT for the oil temp sender. Having the oil pressure read 0 in the dash with the warning lamp will give me a lot of anxiety driving around. I do have the actual GM sensor/sender working, but it needs OBD2 as a gauge. If I'm datalogging I don't actually have a readout of what the gauge is currently displaying. 3) Other? Find a new location for the OEM sender? Though I don't know of anywhere that will work. I also don't know if a steel adapter is actually functionally smart here. It's clearly leveraged itself through vibration of the motor and snapped in half. This doesn't seem like a setup a smart person would replicate given the weight of the OEM sender. Still pretty happy being lucky for once and seeing this at the absolute last moment before bye bye motor in a big way, even if an adapter is apparently 6 weeks+ delivery and I have no way to free the current stuck/potentially destroyed threads in the current oil block.
