I cut a rectangle out of the bottom corner and made my own fiberglass pods to suit some fusion woofers and crossovers.

Its not show quality but still looks good and works well.

I hacked up the factory black plastic pod thing so that it had a flat face to it...

2 factory screw mounts were still there and mounted a 6mm MDF board up to the now flat face...

Traced the 5" woofer and flush mount for the tweeter onto the MFD board (checking for possible depth issues)...

Remove the MDF pannel and cut the holes...

Re-mounted the MDF pannel and trial fit the speaker and tweeter...

Add some resin (and fibreglass if needed) to bond the MDF to the plastic pod and also seal any gaps...

Clean up any fibreglass dags and trial fit the finished product...

Spray with matt black paint...

Mount the complete pod and wire up...

Enjoy...

The benifit I gained from this install was that the factory plastic pods also doubled as the front wall of the door pockets so there is no way anything will find its way into my door. Also the factory mounts are angled so that the speakers face up towards your face rather than straight out into your leg... my speakers play into my ears now and not into my MASSIVE calf muscles!

oh... and no, sorry I don't have any pics

I bought some 5 3/4 speakers with a little teewter in them, mounted them in the factory speaker pods.

Looks standard. Also hid a set of Pioneer 6" threeways under the rear factory speaker grills.

Hope this helps.

Mike

What luck you are in!!!

The twat that replaced the factory speakers in my car (before I installed new splits), did a super dodgey job and busted the factory speaker grille. It has never stayed in properly and today fell out completely. I have to remove the door trim to fix it permenantly, so I will take some pics of my modified factory plastic pods... all in the intrest of science of course.

hey, got my stereo guy to put some pioneer 6.5 inch splits in the front door. he was able to do it just by trimming at the factory plastic to make it big enough to put the speakers in, he said it's better to do it that way rather then make a new mount out of mdf cause it makes for better Acoustics or something because it keeps the original angle of the factory plastic speaker mount. thats what i understood when he was telling me.

but plastic is tinny, rattles and vibrates a lot more than thick wood would

i reckon he said that cause it would have been more work to make up new ones hah!

yeh probs, but it did take him a while to shape all the plastic. They seem to be very clear and i dont get any sort of rattles or vibrations or anything but i geuss it just depends on the time you want to spend on it.

    • The real question is, on some of those wild roads they call highways, how many times did a farmer in an old ute from the early 2000s blaze past you over double lines?   Tassie is a wild and really cool place, and after doing a work related road trip there January of 24, I understand why Targa Tasmania is ran there, and is so tough to do well at! We had a brand new Camry Hybrid that handled quite nicely, and thankfully weren't in an old car, because cresting some of those hills in a 100kmh zone for it to suddenly be like "surprise f**kers, this is a recommended 30kmh hard right turn" wouldn't be pretty. We weren't racing the Camry around, but we weren't slouching in the bends either. But my lord those old farmers know their old clapped out utes, and those roads, as they were absolutely hammering it!   You're also super lucky to make it up to Mt Wellingtong this time of year. It's often road closed with snow/ice! Also, I hope you hit up Salamander Road in Hobart for some insanely good food (I highly recommend the dimly lit Irish pub for a Guiness Pie, or even the bangers and mash!!!)   How long did the Ferry take to get across? I want to do a road trip of Tas on my own time, but I get horrifically sea sick, and I don't want me on the Ferry, just the car 😛
    • So far so good, about 30km on it so far and nothing out of sorts yet thankfully
    • Look at @Kinkstaah's thread on the issue.
    • Hmm not really, I'd say its race car life or modified car life when you make 3 or 4 times the power Nissan designed the car for lol.
    • I'll let others with more breakage chime in, but I can't think of anyone who had a problem with the standard centre plate before they had a problem with the standard gears - the plate generally just gets replaced for safety when the gearset is upgraded. As for the gearsets, its not like they are OK at 600Nm and break at 601. Their longevity is a combination of how much torque you are making and how gentle you are on shifts (or not).
