Hi All,

Just got hold of a R33 S2 turbo for my R32 Gts-t as the standard one is 186 000km old and starting to head out the exhaust!!! I have relentlessly pondered the option of replacing the turbo myself, however due to time restraints (i need the car working, and working well in 3 weeks time), an extreme lack of tools and work area at the moment i am succumbing to the idea of taking it to a workshop to get it done.

I have considered Boostworx, but due to me living and working in the northern suburbs i would like to go for something more local such as Morpowa. From what ive read in the forum Morpowa seems to have a good reputation so i think the first stop might be to Morpowa.

Has anybody got any idea what i should be paying for this to be done? Or would i be better off just buying the tools and dealing with the process myself? And just to add to this i have the tutorial done by Gordon at project32.net so i could theoretically do it, with lots of swearing and grazed knuckles ;)

hey would be nice to know as im hunting down a r33 turbo! just sold mine and realised i wanted to put it on lol stoopid me! hahahaha

Yeh i will let you know if i do end up going that way. Since i posted it last nite i have had some valuable advice passed my way, and lets say for the sake of $300 or so labor, i could do it myself!!! Not sure at the moment ill see how i go and if i get time most of all!

Its generally around the $250 - $300 mark, depending on which gaskets you change if any.

As long as you have the R33 inlet snorket piece everything will go smooth.

Yeh, i have the turbo to exhaust manifold gasket already. Got it from a nissan dealer a while back for about $30 brand new.

But im just in need of the elbow piece so i will be making some calls tomorrow!!

go speak to the boys at jesters by city dismantlers. have seen their work and its high quality. they are doin a top mount t3/t4 conversion on my 32 atm and they are cheaper than most by far.

import spares at windsor gardens or any general import wreckers should be able to help you with the elbow.

i have played around with mine, i put a rb25 one on my rb20det and was no troubles with the fitment. can be a bit fiddly with the water and oil lines, but no big drama's.

one thing i can suggest is make sure you know how to set up the vacume line which goes to the actuator... the rb20's and 25 turbo's have a different set up - which me and two qualified mechanic friends couldnt work out... we decided to take it around the block as is and ummm accidently hit 18-19psi maybe twice and yeah... cya later oil seals in the turbo lol.

just make sure u work this step out before install if u do it. i have learnt from my mistake lol.

alternatively i have an rb25 turbo sittin on my bench waiting to be gutted and hiflowed

Yeh i think the RB20/RB25 turbo swap tutorial on project32.net goes through the need for the weld in nipple on the intake pipe for the actuator. Havent fully read through it in detail yet but i will get to that as soon as i have time. Movin house currently!

Also, take to actuator off your RB20 turbo and put it onto the RB25 turbo, as the min boost is set higher

on the RB20 turbo.

    • Yup. You can get creative and make a sort of "bracket" with cable ties. Put 2 around the sender with a third passing underneath them strapped down against the sender. Then that third one is able to be passed through some hole at right angles to the orientation of the sender. Or some variation on the theme. Yes.... ummm, with caveats? I mean, the sender is BSP and you would likely have AN stuff on the hose, so yes, there would be the adapter you mention. But the block end will either be 1/8 NPT if that thread is still OK in there, or you can drill and tap it out to 1/4 BSP or NPT and use appropriate adapter there. As it stands, your mention of 1/8 BSPT male seems... wrong for the 1/8 NPT female it has to go into. The hose will be better, because even with the bush, the mass of the sender will be "hanging" off a hard threaded connection and will add some stress/strain to that. It might fail in the future. The hose eliminates almost all such risk - but adds in several more threaded connections to leak from! It really should be tapered, but it looks very long in that photo with no taper visible. If you have it in hand you should be able to see if it tapered or not. There technically is no possibility of a mechanical seal with a parallel male in a parallel female, so it is hard to believe that it is parallel male, but weirder things have happened. Maybe it's meant to seat on some surface when screwed in on the original installation? Anyway, at that thread size, parallel in parallel, with tape and goop, will seal just fine.
    • How do you propose I cable tie this: To something securely? Is it really just a case of finding a couple of holes and ziptying it there so it never goes flying or starts dangling around, more or less? Then run a 1/8 BSP Female to [hose adapter of choice?/AN?] and then the opposing fitting at the bush-into-oil-block end? being the hose-into-realistically likely a 1/8 BSPT male) Is this going to provide any real benefit over using a stainless/steel 1/4 to 1/8 BSPT reducing bush? I am making the assumption the OEM sender is BSPT not BSPP/BSP
    • I fashioned a ramp out of a couple of pieces of 140x35 lumber, to get the bumper up slightly, and then one of these is what I use
    • I wouldn't worry about dissimilar metal corrosion, should you just buy/make a steel replacement. There will be thread tape and sealant compound between the metals. The few little spots where they touch each other will be deep inside the joint, unable to get wet. And the alloy block is much much larger than a small steel fitting, so there is plenty of "sacrificial" capacity there. Any bush you put in there will be dissimilar anyway. Either steel or brass. Maybe stainless. All of them are different to the other parts in the chain. But what I said above still applies.
    • You are all good then, I didn't realise the port was in a part you can (have!) remove. Just pull the broken part out, clean it and the threads should be fine. Yes, the whole point about remote mounting is it takes almost all of the vibration out via the flexible hose. You just need a convenient chassis point and a cable tie or 3.
