Hey all,

A friend of mine might give me his old GT-R wing - the thing is my car is black and his is red; to repaint it black will cost me an arm and a leg if I want it done right with gloss etc; so I will attempt to do it myself.

Here's what I plan to do... buy somethine like 5 cans of high quality gloss black paint, 3 cans of primer coating paint and some sanding paper... I plan to send down the rough edges (if any), give the wing 4-6 coats of primer then spray it with the black gloss paint and give it like 5 coats of paint on top. Obviously I will do this over several days if not a couple of weeks; but was wondering if it will look anything close to what the shops would make it look?

I mean, would it look half-descent on my Skyline or will it look like something that was definitely done at home with some spray cans - mind you I will invest in good quality spray cans.

Has anyone done this before (any tips DIY's) - some pictures would be nice too...

once you have done all that, and paint has dried, after a week give it a wet and dry sand with 1000grit, 1500grit then 2000. Get a buffer and some cut and polish to finish off. Should be ok, or just go get it paint matched and painted at a shop.

The key is not to rush it and try and totally cover the wing in 1 coat as the paint will go on too thick and you will get bubbles. The biggest problem will be trying to match the paint colour.

Yeah, from my experience, the paint from a spray can would come out good until the end. At the end, it starts to go strong, weak and then a big 'puddle' of paint will come out. Just becareful. :P

I'm still hesitant about spraying the interior/enginebay/boot of my car myself in the garage. It would cost me approx $70 but im more worried about the finish and the extensive sanding required to get a good finish.

Then again I have been quoted over $1000 by a few professionals to do the work and its only the interior of a circuit car so maybe it's worth giving it a go since i've been priming it myself already.

That turned out pretty well didn't it. I'm too scared to paint my 32 at home. What happens when you stuff something up? :D

I did the linoleum technique on the interior of the AE86... came out quite good. I wasn't going for a gloss finish... just a matt black. Sold the car before I could do the exterior.

I'd never do it on a car I cared about.... but a shitbox that you experiment on, knock yourself out. If you f**k up, put a sticker over it :D

if any of you guys have a compressor and want to try it it's not that hard :P

just buy a HVLP gun, cost round $50 from ebay,

but yeah as said above, you screw it up and a lot of sanding is involved :thumbsup:

I did mine in black, it showed up all the dents :S so i need to go reprep it

Basically what's involved is:

wax and grease remover, sand back to bottom coat or strip to baremetal if you want to go hardout, if you goto baremetal you'll need an etch primer first so you can get a good coat, i went:

300 grit down to baremetal, then etch primer, sand back to 400 grit, then primer, then guide coat, sand and block back to 400 grit again, then primer again, then sand to 600 grit

spray with base coat, wait 5-10 minutes depending on the paint, spray again, wait, spray again, wait spray again.

Then wait for it to dry, leave for about a week so you can do the wet sanding when the paint is properly hard, i went from 800 grit for heaps of orange peel, down to 1200grit, to 2000 grit, then buffed it up, it came up so shiney, but i wanted more, that's why I'm stuffed it :worship:

I forgot to use the wax and grease remover and the clear screwed the paint :domokun: 2 weeks work down the drain :P

I'm going to be doing it again soon though, total cost for the first job $200 :P including 4L primer, 4L thinner, 4L basecoat, 2L clear all Dulon cheap stuff, high gloss black too, so i didn't really need the clear, I'll post up a DIY in the next few weeks when I start redoing it

That linolium rust proof stuff is funny as, I know a guy here has used house paint on his, cost him $50 as well and he rolled it on, put about 4 coats on then sanded it, it was only a track car, but it looks pretty funky now

I had one repainted for $110 professional job by panel beater/ spray painter, dont know why would you would bother stuffing around buying a gun etc ?

Was that $110 for spraying a spoiler? I thought it would've been like $50 :nyaanyaa: I've got no idea :)

average price around the place here in SA is $250 to paint a bar, so I would imagine slightly less to spray and wing. Most places charge $70-$100 per hour, so you get basically nothing for $50!

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
