Hey dudes and gals!!

I recently just find out that i have a minor knock in my rb20 at 3k-4k anything thing under is fine atm. (but still not driving it)

and i would like to know and to talk about what is the best way to go with what engine.

I could rebuild this and just replace the damaged parts for a few grand i guess..

i could buy another rb20 to put in and be unhappy with the car, and prop sell the car.

i could be a 25 and drop it straight in and hope like the other 20 that nothing goes wrong.

i could rebuild the 25 i have in my shed for anywhere between 4K-6K i guess.

or i could rebuild this 20 for the same amount.

I would like to know peoples views and ideas on this area.

Cheers.

no jokes just facts, post up some results if you have them from your own build etc.

2nd hand RB20 motor, cost about $300 - $600?

If you get a good condition one it will last you for a while.

Otherwise if your not happy with the RB20, like your saying, just go with an RB25 like most others do, or if you want to be creative go an RB26?

But, if you want to spend that sort of money (4-6k for a rebuilding the RB25) you might as well do an RB26/30setup.

I'm sure you wont get bored of that.

Personally I would go for the RB30 bottom end if I was going to spend that sort of money. There not as expensive as people think they are. Should have a read through the thread.

RB30 with 25de head would be the most feasible way making power without excessive amounts of work and extra parts. This option you can build the motor on the side and keep on driving your car right up until it's ready to go in. The rb30 bottom ends are fairly hardy so you may be able to get away with just new rings, bearing, water pump etc. just small inexpensive stuff.

The only problem with the rb30 conversion is the need for a stronger gearbox, which would probably be needed with a rb25 anyway. A New turbo will also be needed, so I suppose that's another cost to take into consideration.

thanks guys

yes i know the rb25/30 cost about the same amount to build etc....but it also sits higher in engine bay i dont want to get a modifed bonnet...so its out of the equation, but it would be nice.

abu: my 20 was supposed to last me a while yet, but stuff knows where this problem came from. i dont want to have to spend 600 on a 20 when it has a chance of buggering up, dont get me wrong i have owned my car with its 20 for 2 years now, and it has never missed a beat is always serviced, so still has me puzzled.

i not after an insanely powerful engine either, but weekend fun in the 20 has it limits and the small power it has i do not enjoy it anymore.

what is this knock?

only under load?

or even if cruising?

has anyone diagnosed the problem with the current engine?

I don't know if I'd go jumping in to new engines and rebuilds etc before getting a professional opinion.

if you are tight for cash, I'd either fix what is broken or get a replacement rb20, then strip and sell your current one.

use the money from that for new turbo, injectors, pump and remap.

I don't see why you would be unhappy with it after that.

yes i went and saw a mechanic last night and he went over it.

the knocking starts at about 3 - 4K on the rev range and continues up, i personally has checked and rechecked for loose bits and vibration bits and i cant find shite.

i do have a 25 block and head sitting in my garage atm. so i dont know whether to sell that and fix and mod the 20 or the sell the 20 and fix and mod the 25. basically.

the car atm has a chip and remap, and fuel pump.

I would:

get another RB20 and have it put it.

Strip your Broke RB20 for parts and advertise here.

strip the RB25 bits you have and sell for parts here.

you will have got your car back on the road and MADE money.

which you can use for turbo, injectors and rechip.

yeh.. I always tend to come up with great tightarse options.

:laughing-smiley-014:

got me stuffed to know why you would though

;)

i wont be doing exactly what you said...but the 20 i will be selling though.

im too poor to start that trend sorry!! lol

yeah anyone want some rb20 parts...there is nothing wrong with it honest!!!

but seriously anyone...make me a resonable offer...chiped and tuned ecu...newish coils.

that sounds very much like a big end knock

if i was you i would get a set of big end bearings and wack em in there (wouldnt be much more than a 100bucks) as long as it hasnt been knocking for long otherwise its probably scored the crank or rod cap.

or

go out get standard rings and bearings and give the whole engine a freshen up, if you do the work yourself it wont set you back more than 500bucks for parts including a gasket kit and as long as the engine isnt pumping rediculous amounts of hp it should be very reliable.

cheers for the ideas.

wouldn't a big end knock happen all the time?

i was considering rebuilding but have only just thought of something else, a while ago i was noticing the oil pressure was dropping, but when i turned off and started it again it would go back to normal...i would go for a drive and keep it below 4k, but if i'd rev it out it would drop again...again stop the car and start it again and it would be fine. the light never came on, so i thought i must be dodgy P/S. and i didnt think anything of it.

but that has passed.

So say if i were to use the 25 how stoopid should i go with it?

say for 350HP

cams?

forged?

head work?

shot peening?

and what turbo would be good for a response build say full boost by 3k?

cheers.

    • Guys since i bought r33 gts25t coupe 1994 automatic a/t(manual swap 350z gearbox)  all i got is problems, always problems. Lets start with that when i turn key into ignition(ON) fuel pump doesnt always works. Sometimes i have to turn key twice Off/on/off/on until it primes. Its new, dw300 - 340lph. My gearbox broke so i did gearbox swap, install different intake manifold, injectors and i take pipes. Car was sitting in garage for more than half a year. I did assembly all not that long ago and when i turn ignition cant hear prime. All of sudden it stopped working. Theres many videos on YouTube how to make relay mod on r33 straight from battery so i did and it doesnt work! 😰 30 - battery positive  87 - positive from fuel pump to relay 85, 86 - one of two wires from original fuel pump wires(light blue, grey) and it didn’t work. so I check on ignition and took original BLUE relays wires from trunk, next to fuses. (I believe it’s IGN+ and ECU pin 18. it didn’t work…  tried connecting (IGN+ from og relay) and (ECU 104 from 1of4 FPCM wires) to my new relay 85/86 and it didn’t work.  I unplug FPCM. Didn’t work. im thinking what’s wrong   fuel pump is working, if I leave IGN+ on 85 and 86 straight to ground it works but it’s just nonstop. Since it getting constant 12v after key in ON. light blue wire gives me 6-8v.  so how this should be connected? What causing ECU not giving — on pin? Or I did sth wrong and that’s why it doesn’t work? I need negative signal on ECU that control fuel pump. What this should be?
    • You can use your VIN to look up the factory part number somewhere like amayama, and then look to order new if necessary. https://www.amayama.com/en/genuine-catalogs/nissan Depending on price you might want to rebuild instead. @GTSBoy I had an interesting insight into US market parts when the Titan rear calipers were sticking. New calipers were dirt cheap, about 20% more than a rebuild kit....they are just considered throw away maintenance items
    • Funny, but really not funny. Thank god (most) f the world has moved on since then
    • Lots of votes for driving onto a plank first; that is the quickest way I've found, 25mm is enough for my case but that will vary by car It also depends where you are going for. On the 32 I can get to the rear diff with my floor jack if I do that end first, and get it up on stands. Then I lift the front from either front tow hook as high as needed, also onto stands. Sometimes I need a small lift on the other tow hook to get it level enough If I do the front first I can't get to the rear diff because of the angle of the car Other options are getting to the front mount of the rear subframe from in front of the wheel (if only lifting one side, or just do both which is a bit of a pain compared to one lift from the diff), or also the gearbox cross member mount on the driver's side if you are  just trying to lift the driver's side. I This is the jack I use; it says 75mm clearance but of course that is only on the lower section so if you have to reach too far in like the diff you still get stuck. https://www.snapon-bluepoint.com.sg/category/Floor-Jacks/product/Floor-Jack,-2-Ton-Low-Profile
    • On the bright side, the weather will turn much nicer for working outside shortly....sounds like you might need to start on a neighbour's garden next
