Hi everyone, past couple of weeks i've been reading the forums about R34's, namely GT-T, to learn as much possible before buying one.

On the weekend i finally bought one. Now just a couple of questions hopefully you guys can answer me:

1. Is there any way to brighten the dash lights (namely the centre gauge) as its a bit dim. Or is there anyway to change the lights?

2. When you press the central locking button on the drivers side door, does it also lock the drivers door (as mine only locks the passenger door)?

3. When you pull the lever on the drivers side seat for people to get into the back seat, does the seat move forward? The passenger's side works fine?

4. There's a switch on the drivers side which has a picture of headlights (i think) that has 4 settings. What is this for?

5. There's also another switch near the gears (centre console) which has a picture of a steering wheel. Whats this for?

Sorry for question 4 and 5...they are still trying to find the user manual for me.

The reason for 2 and 3 is because i'm not too sure if its like that/if it was manufactured like that or if its an actual fault.

BTW, the car is stock and auto. Only has the front lip which has 'skyline' written on it.

Cheers

Congratz on the purchase.

1. there should be a dail near the steering wheel... the dimmer was needed for compliance, so it wouldnt look to flush with the car

2.thats correct..only the passenger should lock. when you manually lock the driver side, that will lock all doors

3.i have a 4dr so im not sure, but that should be right

4. that will be the XENON headlight adjustment. if you select the setting one by one, the low beam light moves up or down and adjusts accordingly. thats why they had to take the xenons out from compliance and put normal bulbs in. cause we have to manually adjust the angle of the low beam. i think european cars like BMW have it auto adjustment . it is just so you wont blind oncoming traffic when your going up/down a hill

5.well when your on tiptronic mode, you push the switch and you should see a display on your cluster of a steering wheel that means you can change gears on the steering wheel...which has a + and - so you can gear up/down.

Thanks for the quick replies!

E_Lu-SHuN: Where is this dial you are talking about? I can't seem to find that.

Just regards to number 2: I've actually got a central locking buton on the drivers door. If i push it will lock all doors except for the drivers door. However if i manually lock the door (as in push the locking mechanism on the door), then both doors will lock.

Can any other R34 coupe owners answer the drivers seat question?

Thanks in advanced

The car is about 10 yrs old. All the lights will be crappy in most cars. Just change them if it's bad at night.

If you use the button to lock, it only locks the passenger side door. This was how they designed it from factory.

Passenger side seat will slide forwards when lifting the lever but not the drivers side. This is the way it was designed, also for other manufacturers.

The adjusters are for your xenons.

I don't know of this wheel dial next to shifter.

mine didnt come with a dimmer switch either....i spent 2 whole days looking for that f**ker....

do you get a noise like an old hard drive booting up from behind the dash when its cold?...or does anybody?...

Is the noise from behind the main dash, or behind the triple gauge cluster?

Thanks for all the replies guys, really appreciate it. Now i have 'peace of mind' as i thought the seat and central locking thing was a fault with the car.

Just 2 quickies...

1. The hazard light button, is that meant to be illuminated when you turn on the lights?

2. The centre console with the gear stick, are the park, reverse, drive etc meant to light up?

LOL, most of my questions looks like they are regarding lights, whether they light up or not.

Cheers

the noise from behind your dash could be the climate controll fan direction motors moving into place.

makes the noise even when the climate control is off. i just got a call from the mechanics and i get the car back today instead of friday so ill have a look at it thisarvo.

Car has been excellent, although i've been driving it like a granny....wife is usually in the car with me and she would sell the car straight away if I drove it hard :(

Just got installed the immobiliser and alarm so i do have that peace of mind. The first week all i had was the factory central locking, club lock and plenty of prayers to make sure no-one steals my baby.

I'll post up some pics soon

    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
    • You don't have an R34 service manual for the body do you? Have found plenty for the engine and drivetrain but nothing else
    • If they can dyno them, get them dyno'd, make sure they're not leaking, and if they look okay on the dyno and are performing relatively well, put them in the car.   If they're leaking oil etc, and you feel so inclined, open them up yourself and see what you can do to fix it. The main thing you're trying to do is replace the parts that perish, like seals. You're not attempting to change the valving. You might even be able to find somewhere that has the Tein parts/rebuild kit if you dig hard.
    • Can you also make sure the invoices on the box (And none exist in the boxes) are below our import duty limits... I jest, there's nothing I need to actually purchase and order in. (Unless you can find me a rear diff carrier, brand new, for stupidly cheap, that is for a Toyota Landcruiser, HZJ105R GXL, 2000 year model...)
