Hi,

This question may seem a little vague because I don't have very much information I can give.

My imported R33 GTR has arrived from Japan, its pretty heavily modified, the first mechanic suggested the front diff was aftermarket.

However, when jacked up so the back wheels were free, the wheels spun by themselves, there seems to have been some kind of wind-up in there that had occurred.

It was then found out that the wheels ONLY turn together, they seem to be completely locked.

This seems like a bad thing for the car as I have advised it will be unstable at certain speeds or in wet weather, so I will have a mechanic work on it as soon as I can, however, is this kind of modification normal in Japan?

I'm hoping its something I can remove rather than replace the entire diff...

A quick search showed that this can be done by welding the diff to create a locker?

Or adding something into the diff, a mini-spool ?

My mechanical knowledge is not very good so sorry if the explanation is not clear.

Regards,

Gareth

P.S. I can take photo's of under the car but I don't think it will help (or will it?)

Is there any reason why you don't think it is a 2-way? Im pretty sure these parts are cheap as chips over in japan thats why welded diffs are almost unheard of on skylines.

If it was me I'd drop the diff out and take it to the local diff specialist might save you some money in the long run.

How much power is the 33 putting out

Cheers

Daniel

I would go to a mechanic that really knows there stuff. all GTRs have mechanical 2 way LSDs from the factory. this is most likely what they are expriencing.

Hmm, we'll the diff was constantly locked while the car was jacked up in neutral, is this normal for a 2 way? I've read 2-way locks on acceleration and de-acceleration.

It also has a bit of diff whine from either front or rear diff.

I will have to organise for a good mechanic/diff specialist to see the diff at some point to make sure its ok.

In regard to the power question, no idea, I've only had it for a week or so now. Still haven't found out if the turbo's are stock or not ;)

I've also found that the wheel is turning in the opposite direction of the other wheel if we jack up the back of the car and turn one of the wheels by hand with the car in neutral.

I thought this happens to open-wheel diff's? Is this normal?

He's talking about the front diff i think?

oops :whistling: my bad. yes front diff is open. sounds like something is wrong.

Ok, so something is wrong, but just to clarify, on a stock R33 GTR.

Rear diff is a mechanical two way LSD.

Front diff is a viscous LSD?

I will get the diff checked out by a mechanic soon, hopefully its nothing major :P

thats what an LSD diff does , to me it sound like u got a standard rear diff , they can be very tight , some redline diff oil freed up mine up alot

Yes, that could be the case.

no front diff is not a viscous LSD. it's not an LSD at all. it's an open diff. no LSD action.

Weird, my front diff behaves the same as the back, the wheels spins in the opposite direction to the other wheel, and locks tight. One wheel cannot spin without the other one.

So that would mean I do have an aftermarket front diff.

Thanks for the help, hopefully its just an oil change that will fix the weird clunking sound and any other problems :(
