So theres a imported skyline thats been sitting in a paddock for the past year. Im considering buying it but want to see what i would be getting into.

Its unregistered and no plates. It supposedly came from QLD where it was supposedly registered at some point. There is no paperwork at all.

It needs a LOT of TLC which im ok to deal with.

Ive got the chassis number and ill run it through REVS. Other than that, what challenges will i have ? Obviously it needs to go through the pits but what do I have to be prepared with. Is there someone i can call to see if/where its been registered before? How can i be sure its been complianced/import approval?

If it has been registered at some point, that means it would have been complied. If so, then it will be on the database so if you have the chassis & engine numbers it shouldn't be a problem to find out when & where. To re-register it, it would have to be legal, which means if it's been neglected for a while you would probably have a lot of work to do to make sure of it (complete fluids change, complete vehicle inspection for roadworthiness, rust, leaks etc), but on the other hand you could probably get it for quite cheap & if it turns out to be better than expected you might get a better car than what you could buy somewhere else ;) Good luck

Stock parts are easy to come by, going after market isn't that expensive either for most things. Body work will be the killer, as long as you can mend/hide any rusting bits you should be sweet.

Sounds like a good project to do with a few mates.

Have you talked to the owner to ask why its been sitting there? Possible fubar'd engine/gearbox?

Yeh i think we are thinking of the same vehicle. GTS-X ;)

I was the one pending payment and i pulled out after doing a compression test tonight. Cylinder 1 rings are gone, putting oil in there brought the compression up. The car without the engine is still worth the money. Its in the quokka if anyone is interested. Interior is great, no rust besides surface rust under battery, needs engine work and a lot of minor TLC. Paint is shit but the bodywork is good with only couple minor dents easy fixed. No obvious crash damage, all panels line up and doors/boot close perfect.

RB20DET. Manual. Has import approval and compliance plate so thats all good for registering. $1800.

buy it and a 33 half cut and go at it I reckon.

    • All 3 I guess. The car came with the JASI Aero 4 door Type R Full Kit unpainted so this was one thing at the top of my list to complete then I noticed there were body panels parts for this kit so i picked them up along with some black mesh to fill in the front bumper and front side air vents. car is at a paint and body shop atm completing this work. Next I will be addressing the internal bells and whistles, great summer project I can do with the kids.  full interior removal - ,boys car sound deadening - pads and spray ,boys stereo, sound, lighting - Big 3, GTT or bigger alternator ,kids head lining - dye black add star lighting mod ,daughter. That's it for the next 5-6 months. I have some motor maintenance  work i have to plan out. oil filter relocation, gaskets, mounts. beyond that, mind is starting to turn over if i can use a DET intake plenum, block off turbo ports & pipe in a air intake.
    • roller coaster of a ride. Alarm system was removed & main harness was repaired where possible. still no fix just random successful starts. moved on to the replacing the ignition switch and relay. well all this troubleshooting & repair has been going on, the car is at a paint and body shop being pushed around. Ive been going down there on odd days after work to get it sorted.

    • PROBLEM WAS BROKEN COOLANT SENSOR!!! Replaced with a new one and its running mint.
    • I think he was only proposing to use the wire, not the sender. Simply because it runs from the right place to the right place. Personally, I wouldn't hack up the factory wiring like that. I'd just lay in the Defi loom.
