hey all i drive a rb20 s13. Anyways keep the story short. i blew my turbo up a while ago.. took it to get rebuilt, and it seems that there wasnt enough oil going into the turbo.. so this means there is something wrong witht he feeding point.

I know it could be a blocked line, however im not sure, and keep thinking it could be something to do with low oil pressure. What would be causing this problem???

Anyways was wondering if anyone else knows anything about this issue, and what soughta cost these problems can bring along.

I know if its too expensive, i will just be throwing in a another rb20 for around 1500..

thanks for your help boys/girls

Nathan

the stock turbo is Ball bearing.

and therefore has a oil restrictor in the line (or on the banjo bolt or something - can't remember)

if the turbo was hiflowed previously and a non ball bearing cartridge was used (very common) and the oil restrictor was not drilled out, then there wouldn't have been enough oil to the turbo.

if it was a stock turbo and stock everything else, it might be a good idea to just go get another stocker turbo and stock oil lines from another engine.

or if someone on here could tell you the size the restrictor should be, you could get new braided turbo oil line from someone like ENZED or PIRTEK who could put the right size restrictor on it.

hey thanks for the help,

the turbo is a gcg highflow 500hp turbo, im pretty sure its ball bearing, i have a braided turbo oil line, the engine has had no problems except this.. runs so smooth..just starving the turbo.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

finally have had the oil amount coming out of the line measured and the mate that did it for me, it's exactly the sameas his rb20, and his is running perfect oil pressure and has been running a ball bearing turbo also.

so what the hell? lol

confused?

it only ran for 3 months punching out tonnes of smoke, dammit have to wait till my mechanic gets back, anyone else have any ideas?

is it possible that higher up in the rev range all the oil is leaving the sump, and this is causing the turbo to run dry?

    • Started sifting thru my brakes to decide which ones I will run on Clem   Made me think I should just put them all on Silver...for when brake fade just isn't an option   Should be able to bump rotor up from 343x32 to 348x36 off Supra. Not sure if the Supra annulus is right for the Alcons or APs but trying g to find a used Supra\M4 rotor to test fit The Alcons seem to gain 1-2mm clearance which all helps

    • Probably speedometer itself if the odometer is ticking. If the needle is stuck from a bit of grease or something that can cause it to stay at 0. Or a cracked solder joint in the speedometer can do it too.
    • Thanks Fella’s   to take this off topic and to elaborate a bit more. I have an rb25/30 going into a r32 GTST.. expected to make around 600-700hp. Would you?   A) R34 GTT box   B) CD00#?  I’ve seen a few posts about the CD swap and sounds fairly involved with making it fit etc but if it’s worth the work then I’ll go that way
    • Lower at the hubs. Funny I forgot to mention that part. Do this pull here I turned the camera off too soon but the graph shows a drop at the top and that was because the pipe from the turbo blew off. The tuner said we could’ve made possibly another 15 whp. He also added if I switched to ethanol we could up the boost some more as well. I was comfortable capping it at the most of 20 pounds. Turns out the turbo pipe just needed a new worm clamp. Got home replaced that then did a third gear pull from 3k to 7200 rpm and the power was great to the top. I just got an ecu mounting bracket from IEE that I need to try and get everything to fit well. It’s a PITA to get the harness and ecu fit properly behind that kick plate
