Hows it going guys, long time lurker decided to make an account..

Just under 2 weeks ago i got a new excedy twin plate pull-type put into my car (93 BNR32) I also got new transmission & transfer case fluid's. I asked my mech to put in redline, but due to the un-availability of it he put in a motul oil. The first night i picked up the car the clutch was quite noisy when cold and got a bit better when warm, i also found that 2nd gear was crunching and so was 4th (4th used to only crunch when driven hard and changed into at over 80). I also found that the car off the line would really struggle to move unless i rode the clutch a bit (1200-1400rpm) ... I rang my mech in search of answers, he told me that it was a new clutch and that once the necessary 500km's are driven to wear it in, it should all level itself out..

Week and a bit has past and i travelled the 500km, last night i took it for a quick spin.... I then decided to give it a quick squirt 1st into 2nd.. i noticed that it was terribly rough and could feel 3 very quick gear box shudders before it took of in 2nd, i tried it again and the same thing happened. I then decided to shift slower and much more deliberately into 2nd and it worked fine...

Today i took it for another drive to the shops, no hard driving.. and noticed on start up the knock went to 18... i've never had knock go over 1 on start up before... It was also a pain in the ass to start moving from stationary and was making all kinds of noises.

So atm just waiting for my mech to open again so i can give him a call..

I have a feeling that somehow the box was not put back in properly or the clutch isn't balanced... pretty new to all this, but i do remember the mech telling me he hadn't done a pull type clutch in quite some time, i have a sneaky suspision that it may have been a rush job.... Car was in the shops for 2 weeks, Majority of that time was waiting for late parts... Most of the work was carried out in 1 day, so i dunno..

Anyone have ideas on what could be wrong and what would be the best way to approach my mech about all this?

Nothing is wrong with knock hitting 18 on start up.

What motul gearbox oil did he put in? Mineral junk or the full synth Gear 300?

The gear 300 is excellent stuff and will not cause shift problems. The mineral HD motul stuff will.

Motul Gear 300 > Redline anyway.

Not really.. I went from Valvoline semi-synth stuff to VMX80 with an improvement; then to Gear HD and it was horrid, worse than the very cheap valvoline semi-synth

Motul gear 300 ftw if you want good shift quality or simply run the cheap VMX80.

So what your saying is all my gearbox problems "could" be caused by the fluids im using?

wtf does knock have to do with a clutch?? twin plates are noisy.

ive installed trillions of the bastards and theyve all been noise.. thats how they are.. tripples r even worse and 4 r worse again.

as for ur crunching. definately sounds like wrong oils. 75-140 is way too thick for the box anyway. Factory recommends 80/90 which is what i use and i have no problems @ all..

change ur oils. as for shudders and vibrations before takin off?? wtf does that even mean.. when u accel, petrol goes in motor, explodes, makes engine move connects to flywheel wihch moves clutch hence moves car..

it wont vibrate a few times b4 moving.. its not a horse. you open throttle, it moves, unless theres something wrong with ur tune/engine. gearbox doesnt have anything to do with that.. all it does is transfers energy from engine to wheels.

where abouts are u from? i could give u a hand with it if ur in melb.

I know there meant to be a harsher and noisier then standard..

Im glad it's just oils, thought i may have had something worse on my hands...

Disapointed that the mech put it in there with all the experience he's got with gtr's :)

Im from queensland mate... cheers

I've noticed HD clutches require a slight change to driving style to get the car moving. I only fitted a HD single plate clutch. Before that, I'm pretty sure I could ease the clutch - no throttle - and the car would start moving. I now find I need to give some revs or the engine will stall.

So, try giving a few more revs before you start to engage the clutch, see if that solves the "shudder".

the last week i was the same problem to you men i have a skyline gtr r33 and i chance the oem clucth for to put a hks twin plate, and mi mechany put a oil in mi gear box motul ATF gear box the colors was red, when i was in the drag racing and i was running mi firts race the gear box transmission don't take the 1,2,3,4,5 speed i don;t know what happed, but i need to way like 1 hours for to move the car, later the car don't take the 3 and 4 gear the syncro was damage..!and right now was to need a buy a other transmission gear box here and mi country dominicain republic i have the only one gtr r33 , and i search a others transmission gear box but is for the gtr r32 i have a questions to you is the same a gtr r33..? i know there i need to chance the clutch because the gtr r32 early model is push type and mi car gear box gtr r33 is pull type i only wanna to know if is diferent... and what type of oil there really need to put in mi transmission gear box, right know a chance and i put the oil motul 75w90 gear box, and what type of oil used the DIFFERENTIAL is the same of gear box oil...? or is diferent thanks for all and help me about this problem........

MOTUL GEAR 75 / 140 COMP GEARBOX

Hey hi i have a gtr r33 i put in mi gear box a motul 75w90 gear box mechany and in the differential a put this oil too ,is correct oil for both parts thanks i living in dominicain republic you know here is too much warn , thanks for all....

Motul Gear could be Gear HD the mineral junk.

Gear 300 is the only stuff you want. I've tried the Gear HD and it is Nooooooo good. Bulks on fasts shifts once warm also. :S

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day
    • While I was waiting for the new parts to come in for the charge pipe and radiator I decided to do some turbo modification. The drive pressure (exhaust backpressure) was a lot higher that I thought it should be. For 32lbs of boost drive was 55lbs. The turbine housing is a 1.10AR and my turbo builder has suggested to go to a 1.25AR. To test if a larger AR would do anything to reduce drive pressure AND not spend any money I decided to hog out the divider in my current housing. I removed it from the inlet and the whole way through the housing.  After reassembly and testing it doesn't look like this modification did anything for reducing drive pressure or requiring more fuel (making more power). Oh well, it was worth a shot. We'll get some data at the track if it makes it past the 60ft. I also machined a $7 shift knob off Amazon to fit my Stillway shifter since I didn't like the Stillway shift knob. Next on the list was the radiator replacement and fabrication of a new intercooler tube that had no silicon coupler. No pictures of this - I was short on time each night after work to get this done and didn't stop to take pictures.  Next was to get the clutch disks out and replaced. Previously when installing the dogbox I had ordered a set of the same sintered iron disks I had been running because I switched to the 26-spline input shaft. I thought it was odd that they didn't have any markings or brand name on them like all my old disks had but installed them anyway. At the track I could not get the clutch to lock up using my normal strategies. After two track nights I reached out to the clutch manufacturer and ask their thoughts. They said they had to switch the material out because they were having trouble getting the original material and that this new material would not take to being slipped very well.  So out with the first set of 26-spline disks and in with the correct material 26-spline disks. While I had the trans out I added an inspection/service hole. I've wanted one of these for a while. Now I can have a look at things and change the front cover shimming when needed (clutch wear). I hustled and got the clutch change done in a few hours on a Saturday. Hopped in the car and drove home. On the way home I did a 1-3 pull. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd the core plug in the back of the cylinder head popped out and dumped all the coolant. Thankfully I was only 30 seconds from home and coasted it there. Datalog showed nothing unusual and 2.5psi of coolant pressure. That plug has been in there since 1992 but I guess it worked its way out. Pulled the trans AGAIN and replaced the plug, JB welded it in, and made a brace. Also deleted the head drain I had added in during the bearing issue fiasco.  I am currently changing my boost control plumbing to make it cleaner. After that is done I'll make another attempt at getting past the 60.
    • Are you 100% sure this isn't tune related?
    • 140-150 across the board. At this point hoping the grounding harness fixes it. My grounds are all tied to the chassis and none to the battery. For SR and KA that’s never been a problem for me but had a few other guys here and Reddit who told me RB really like a very solid ground setup tied to the battery so going to try that next, I’m stumped if that doesn’t do it. Never had a car have spark and fuel and not fire off before. Only thing I can think is the spark is intermittent/weak because of grounds nothing else really makes sense at this point
    • I am having close to the same issue. Can you help me with what wire you grounded to get your pump to trigger?
