This has more than likely been asked before but i am new so please be nice. I just want to know how much boost an internally standard rb20 can take before something goes pop. eg the head gasket. I have a hks turbo currently running 20psi and it seems to be running fine, no knock or detonation. Any feedback appreciated.

awesome, thanks for that. I don't want to blow it up just yet hehe. As for the me giving you (roy) $400 for a turbo that just recently cost me 2g. I DONT THINK SO. but thanks anyway: ) It's a gt2530, however it has been modified with a larger compressor cover and wheel, I think gt28 series. Turbine is still standard 2530 so it gets full boost at 3200-3400rpm but has heeeeeeeaps of top end. good fun when crossed up sideways : ) Still yet to be dynoed but am expecting about 210-215kw. Basically the stock injector limit. What have you done to your cefiro meggala? does anyone know if someone out there has stroked an rb20? I am thinking of doing it but want to know if it's worth it first.

stroking the RB20 isnt worth it, might as well wack a R25 or 26 in for the price, you need RB26 Rods and crank and 86mm pistons (i think like 4AGE pistons, or similar), that will get you a 2.4L but not worth the $$ or effort.

I have seen 220kw from an rb20 with stock injectors. My last dyno it made 190 with fuel probs and fouled plugs. True story! who told you 170kw? I dont know about the turbo either, I didn't modify it. All i can say is it pulls hard, spools up early enough and i'm happy with it's performance. Thanks about the stroker kit advice. I should just buy a GTR instead.

Fair point, but the 2.4L does have its advantages on paper (i havent been for a ride in an RB24 powered car, so dont know from experience)

If you go RB25 or 26 route you are likely to have an internally factory engine (Nothing wrong with them mind you) You have issues regarding rego and insurance. Require new IC plumbing, tailshafts, general installation wiring dramas. It is still a relatively straight forward job as far as engine transplants go, but there is still all additional work.

Now with the RB24 not only does it bolt all back in with no rego or insurance hasslees as noone need be the wiser. You get the comfort of having a new engine built with internals that will better equip the engine for revs and boost and also likely power. I have seen an RB24 powered R32 GTSt on a DVD that was running 10s with a big ass turbo (T88 or T78???... anyone else seen the car, it was red)

What would be interesting is a how a stock $2500 RB25 with something like a HKS 2835 turbo would compare to an RB24 with the same turbo. Any thoughts ppl?

Do a search for the username TranceformEr on SDU. He was rebuilding his RB24 so has the advantage of having torn apart one that was already built, then finding the parts to re-build.

So in addition to what he can tell you will still need to speak to an engine builder re-machining the block to clear the RB26 crank, accept RB26 bearings etc, etc.

All in all when i did some numbers they were coming out near $7,000, and unfortunately i cant justify that sort of spend even if i had the money.

    • Depending on how long the car sat it is very possible for injectors to be stuck open or closed, I'd get them cleaned and flow tested. Other than that, obviously when the loom changes and the car doesn't start any more....the loom is suspect so some tracing / comparing may be required
    • Harness is for a s1 Rb25det, and it is engine and lower harness.  the old harness had broken off plugs and was in very rough condition/exposed wires and splices etc. it is not able to be put back on the car, I could visually inspect to see if they had rewired any pins on the ecu plug. The fuel pump definitly isn’t turning off it’s an external pump and very loud you can hear it. Will look at the other harness tonight, am also going to pull the fuel rail and watch the injectors spray, will update here with what I find. Pretty sure at this point it has to be something to do with injectors because car will fire up on starting fluid and cas is clicking the Injectors. Fuel pressure is steady 43psi 
    • Check the injectors flow evenly, and are actually flowing what you and the ECU think they should be flowing. If it's starting up on starter fluid, you have a fuel issue. Is it possible under cranking your fuel pump is turning off?   The harness you replaced, is that the whole engine harness? Do yourself a test, and drop the old harness on and plug it into the Z32 ECU. It's possible they've wired things different. From memory S1 to S2 is different in RB25 and you may have a wrong loom
    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off.
