I did give it a very quick wash today and used some Meguiars Cleaner Wax on the major stains. It already looks 100% better. I didn't do the whole car, just the bad parts. I'll leave it to a professional to do the whole car. The interior though is absolutely spotless, no-one needs to touch it.

For another few km's of driving today (to the petrol station/car wash) it was awesome, I'm hanging out so bad

So...new photos :(

Well...I didn't pass the rego inspection the first time. But then I changed something, went back and just passed it :( I was panicking for a while, it failed on ride height. The engine splash guard was too low, with that removed it just cleared *phew* Car is now on the road and registered. The white wheels and 3" exhaust will be sitting pretty on it tomorrow :P

Nice car/s.

i enjoy not having a "conventional" fast car. CA18det AUTO gazelle. always good to supprise people.

I like the 4 door 34's, see a couple getting around now. usually they are flat grey or dark silver though.

I remember cleaning my car every 3rd day when i first got her... now it's every 2-3 weeks :S :D

Woot, the R34 is booked in on Monday to have a single DIN CD/MP3 headunit installed and to piss off all the Jap stereo and navigation garbage which is useless here. I'll also remove the handsfree kit. A DIN pocket will be installed in the spare DIN slot. Then it's off next Saturday to have a full exterior clean, polish and wax and engine bay detail (steam clean and degrease) which should take most of the day. Should look 100% more respectable, then I'll post engine bay shots. It's not particularly cheap but it'll be worth it

Got 3 runs in at Calder, I've never run at Calder before. All were pretty similar.

N15 LX Sedan

Avenir PNW10 SR20DET - Auto

GT28RS running 14PSI (stock boost) - 158.5fwkw

Average street tyres, everything in the car including the spare wheel

Ambient Temp: don't know, f'ken cold

Calder Park Raceway, VIC - 02/05/08

1st Run:

- 60ft: 2.359

- Elapsed Time: 13.611

- Trap Speed: 106.58mph

2nd Run:

- 60ft: 2.314

- Elapsed Time: 13.563

- Trap Speed: 104.18mph

3rd Run:

- 60ft: 2.321

- Elapsed Time: 13.579

- Trap Speed: 104.94mph

Still had fun but I was hoping for better. My 60ft time is worse than with the T25g, I'd kinda guessed that as it's a bit laggy off the line and then OMFG wheelspin for another 100-200m. The wheelspin was pretty shocking last night, combination of rain all day, average street tyres and my LSD packing up and going home. I also completely locked up my brakes braking from 200kmp/h on the first run and caused massive flat spots.

Well a few updates. After taking the car down the quarter last night, I have a few upgrades planned. I'm still yet to get the Auto sorted and the car tuned, but that's not too far away now. Additionally to that I've discovered my LSD is completely f*cking useless. Every burnout (I only did three) resulted in massive single-spinners. These photos should give you an idea:

One side of the car:

P5030001.jpg

P5030002.jpg

P5030003.jpg

The other side:

P5030004.jpg

A side note: rubber is really f*cking hard to get off the car. I spent a while today trying to get the caked rubber out of the guards from last night and previous times. The rubber extended over the roof and even onto the bootlid

I'm really not sure what my options are in the LSD department, being that I don't think that SR18DE Auto had many aftermarket performance parts. I have an SR18DE shift kit (so there are aftermarket parts) but I'm not sure if there are any more options aside from replacing the VSLD available as off the shelf items. I'll have to speak to my Auto guy when it goes in next, it's quite overdue for it's yearly service but I've been wanting to hold off until it's tuned for high boost so he can see how much of a pig it is to drive on the street at the moment.

I also upgraded my front tyres today after locking them up at 200kmp/h and sliding for a couple of hundred metres (oops.) Times like these I could have done with ABS. I think my brake bias is also waaaaaaaay out. I didn't even slam on the brakes but they gripped so hard at that speed that I just went into a massive forward slide. Lets just say the flat spots I left were massive.

New tyres:

Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin RE001 :)

P5030005.jpg

I'm looking forward to the injectors, AFM and tune to happen soon. Then it'll be getting the shift points on the Auto sorted. Then it'll be more boost and down the quarter again to see what change it's made :(

Updates on the R34 maybe tomorrow.

The photographer seemed to get more photos in the 3 laps the instructor did in my car than when I was driving it (you'll see photos with two people in the car.) I probably did 40-50 laps before calling it a day and watching people.

Still waiting for the DIN gauge to arrive. On the Skyline front:

1000km's driving yesterday resulted in excellent condition stockies with tyres that have plenty of tread:

Admittedly a lot of the cash adjustment I got for my rims went into the 95L of fuel it took to get to Wagga and back

  • 1 month later...

Well, I haven't updated much progress on the Pulsar. Mainly because I've been frustrated. But maybe things are looking up. There's a number of things I can't discuss online but I am getting closer to putting in place steps to resolve them. In a nutshell I have had transmission problems on and off for 4 months, stemming back to damage caused to the transmission earlier this year. I am expecting the car back next week, and the transmission to be 100%. It can then go back to Sam (Dr Drift) for a check on the tune, which is where it was the last time the transmission decided to let go. Didn't even manage to get on the rollers

Also learnt something new, if the car's moved around and just left to idle too often it'll foul plugs and the car won't start  Thanks Sam for the advice.

So, what have I got planned? Get the tune checked out, install the Defi gauges I purchased (pics in my intro thread), some Bridgestone Adrenalin tyres for the rear (to match the front) and then try to enjoy the car for how it is.

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
    • Oh and some up-and-comings; New rear drivers wheel bearing. I'll do that this weekend while the diff is out. The car is already up and the d/c axles and missing exhaust will help with space. This is the last bearing for me to do and I've been dragging my feet on it. I also have some new EBC blue stuff pads for the car and some new brake fluid. I haven't ever flushed the fluid in this car and looking forward to it. I have 600 degree fluid to put in. Not exactly "race fluid" but better than the typical stuff I have been using.
    • A proper clutch/plate type mechanical diff with quite a lot of pre-load and high locking % is better for drifting. Much more consistent in its behaviour. A helical can be annoyingly vague and inconsistent in how it responds under the sorts of abuse found in drifting.
    • Some updates here. I pulled the entire interior out, minus some trim to respray the seats with Colourlock dye. It turned out really nice though I accidentally let the dog in the car after and she scratched up the front seat.  This is what it looked like before, the colour was just washing out everywhere but thankfully the leather was in good nic. Then after the respray   And after the bloody dog jumped in The headliner is out waiting to be retrimmed, but it will stay out now until Nov - see why below. I replaced the stereo/headunit with a period-styled Android headunit. I have no after pics, but I'll get some. This is because of the missing pixels. I tried to fix this twice with replacement ribbon cables but couldn't. Also the bluetooth interface I'd bought for this was crap. Then there's the rusty roof. Pics and info in this other thread. I have decided to get this repaired professionally, but I'll update that thread. This is why the headliner will stay out for now. I'll be getting the roof and bonnet resprayed at the same time the rust is fixed. I also had an interesting issue with my drivers door lock.  For a small period I was having issues getting any 12v power to the car - I mean *any*. It would have no dash lights, nothing. It happened while I was at the shops and I couldn't get in the car. So, we had 2 problems. The most pressing here is that I was locked out. I have only a single physical key hole on the car, the drivers door and no amount of turning would unlock the car. Surely it doesn't need power for this? The second issue is why am I losing all power periodically, The battery isn't dead, its almost like the battery isn't even there. Two issues that were surprisingly easy to fix. You fellow BMW over-engineering lovers will appreciate this. The lock in the door has 5 states; mechanical lock, electric lock, neutral, electric unlock, mechanical unlock achieved at -90 degrees, -45 degrees, 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. Although, the unlock is towards the front of the car, so opposite for LHD countries. Sticking the key in and turning 45 left or right is what is used 99% of the time. It activates the central locking etc. 90 degrees is for dead battery access and, obvs, only un/locks the one door. But because the mechanical lock is never used and is 27 years old, it seizes up. I was totally unable to turn the key far enough to get to the mechanical unlock (At the time of locking myself out, I didn't even know this was a thing). I eventually did it with some vicegrips and teflon spray.  I made a quick vid for other E39 peeps.   The battery issue is totally new to me also - It wasn't making sufficient contact between the post and the terminal. The terminal was bolted on tight, but the car wouldn't have power. After checking the battery with my multimeter I accidentally contacted the terminal and the battery post and the car got power. The battery was only a few years old and in good condition. I cleaned the post and the terminal with a wire brush, bolted it back on tight and never had the issue again. I'm still surprised that despite having solid contact it didn't work. Also, the car was getting Warragamba sized pools of water in the back when it rained. My initial concern was another rust problem. But when I went out on Weds while it was raining and while I had no headliner in I could see a steady stream of water coming through the roof mounted aerial. As this aerial is for the (now removed) car phone I pulled it out and whacked a blanking grommet in the hole. It seems fine now. I'm thinking I might get the hole permanently filled when the rust is fixed. Moving forward and things in progress; The tailgate needs some attention. I have taken all the trim off to clean it all and address some small rust spots. I have partially done all of this but I'll finish it up hopefully this weekend. As all the trim are now entirely devoid of trim clips I have bought a heap of strong velcro and I'm hoping it does a good enough job as any of this trim in good condition is super expensive and usually in Europe as we dont have many of the wagons here. Suspension and brakes!!! This is exciting. In the front; New control arms New sway bar links New lower Eibach springs (the only modification I'm planning on this car) M Sport shocks (these came with the car and will replace the longer shocks in the car) New top mounts Used 540i calipers (stock brakes suck!) New 540i disks and pads (22x296 mm for 528 and 30x334 mm for 540i) New front wheel bearings (thank all that is holy for bolt on bearings!) Annnnd in the back; New control arms New sway bar links Adjustable air suspension arms (fool the car into what the current height is so the self levelling suspension can match the new front ride height) New ball joints I'll also be doing a brake fluid flush while I'm in there. I'm planning on switching the car over to the 16's that came with it so I can clean up and respray the M Sport 17's. They've lost a lot of colour over the years and have some gutter rash. None of this will start until the E90 is back.
    • You mean you will regret it for drifting duties? I don't quite follow.
