Hey all,

I have a 1989 R32 GTR, stock except for...

900hp Walbro intank fuel pump

2x Greddy filters

Cat back HKS Super Dragger 4" exhaust

Grounding Kit

Tien Coilovers

Front and Rear Strut Bars

They are all installed on the car, i have sitting in my room...

Profec B 2 Boost controller and a Power FC computer and a extreme double plate clutch & flywheel. The engine is only 88,000kms old in going great.

I will be getting sometime soon Splitfire D1 Coils and leads and new plugs.

I am also in the market for sme new turbos....dont know which to get though.

As you know now i want around 400kw atw, but dont want a big single turbo system at the moment.

I have a choice of...

2x HKS GTSS Turbos or 2x Nismo R1 Turbos - the reason its between these turbos is because they are available as a bolt on kit for a GTR, so there is no screwing around getting custom shit made up and so that i can do the work, as i am a mechanic in the RAAF. Get the Power FC installed and tuned by boostworx in adelaide though :D

Which one's do you all reckon i should go with :) . Has anyone used Nismo R1 turbos before as im findin it hard to find info on them, but i can get a good price for them. On the other hand im not t sure GT SS will make 400kw atw.

Any help would be great, thank you.

Im not tryine to rain on your parade here

but

400 At the wheels on stock internals = Bang

GTSS' are good for around 330-340rwkw

R1s a little bit more from memory

And you will need Lots and lots of dollars to get anywhere near that power figure...

Injectors, Cams, AFMs Dump/Front pipes, Crank collar, Forged Internals etc etc

Maybe you have the budget, But as they say "If you have to ask you cant afford"

Not sure If any of the big power guys will tell you how much they have spent. But its not cheap.

Your Best off going to an engine builder/work shop in your area and straight up say. I have this much to spend, how fast can I go.

You will need something along the lines of HKS GT2530's or GT-RS's and a decent amount of boost, not to mention a stack more mods, decent cams and possibly some head work to achieve 400kw at the wheels.

what he said...2530's need 2bar of boost to do 400AWKW so its really stretching them too. GT-RS turbo's are the king of bolt on turbo's...currently powering the fastest bolt on turbo GTR on the planet.

save yourself some headaches, heartache's and lots of time and stress. Sell all the gear you have and buy our car...simple 500kw all day every day at a lowly 25psi.

Who has read that article in the current Autosalon Mag by Iain Kelly about how all Aussie import drivers care about is dyno figures and peak power outputs.

Not how the car accelerates out of a corner or the amount of mid-range grunt.

Id rather have a super responsive 250rwkw over a mega peaky 400 any day.

What do you want to use the car for GTR747.

Judging by your forum name its Drag Racing.

Add to that the 6-8k bottom end :D

Easily 20k to get you going.

I think you need to do a LOT more research GTR747, to not know HKS2530 are a bolt on option, and are the best option for 400awkw... shows there is a very big information gap.

Have a read of the Dyno sticky thread and a few of the links in the FI Guide.

They contain info on setups and what you will need (parts wise) to achieve that power.

Whoever is doing the numbers for the bottom end will also play a key part in its survival at over 650hp.

Mainly want the car responsive but can hold power throughout the rev range. Gonna use the car on the street but want to be able to hold my own around a track at a track day or soforth.

I think im giving the impression i dont know what im talking about here, thats not true. But to tell you the truth, i was unsure what sort of power these 2 kits were capable off, now im getting an idea.

400kw was really just a throw around number, just wanted to see what you guys thought abuot my - A nice, quick responsive GTR - i thought that was obvious when i specified my turbo kit choices. As zebra said, i would rather a super responsive 250rwkw gtr than a peaky 400rwkw gtr.

2530's are by no mean a 'peaky' turbo, but the sheer cost of 400awkw vs a more easily achiveable 300-330awkw is phenominal as it can be done on a stock motor for a start.

GT-SS (or equiv) gets my vote if you revise the 400awkw to around 300-330rwkw, response as stock, pulls to redline.

Of course 400kw is gonna cost to maintain, no questions about that.

So your voting for the GTSS kit then, alrighty then, so far that kit is looking like the one to go for.

Ill be more than happy with a responsive 300rwkw!!!!

so you went from 400 rwkw to 300 rwkw just by taking advice from those in the know.... wow some people do acctually listen!

as for holding you own around the track, 400 rwkw doesnt mean you'll acctually do this... you'd more likely be whipped by a car with 250-300 rwkw and a responsive set up and able to put the power down better.

more power doesnt always = faster....

Thanks guys for all your help - im going with the GT-SS kit poss from nengun. Does anyone know if i'll be hit with any import tax's or anything? I have done some research and so far its been a mixed bag of answers.

Doug for a road/street car GT-SS's would be my pick.

    • Did this end up working? Did you take some pictures?
    • And finally, the front lower mount. It was doubly weird. Firstly, the lower mount is held in with a bracket that has 3 bolts (it also acts as the steering lock stop), and then a nut on the shock lower mount itself. So, remove the 3x 14mm head bolts , then the 17mm nut that holds the shock in. From there, you can't actually remove the shock from the lower mount bolt (took me a while to work that out....) Sadly I don't have a pic of the other side, but the swaybar mounts to the same bolt that holds the shock in. You need to push that swaybar mount/bolt back so the shock can be pulled out past the lower control arm.  In this pic you can see the bolt partly pushed back, but it had to go further than that to release the shock. Once the shock is out, putting the new one in is "reverse of disassembly". Put the top of the shock through at least one hole and put a nut on loosely to hold it in place. Put the lower end in place and push the swaybar mount / shock bolt back in place, then loosely attach the other 2 top nuts. Bolt the bracket back in place with the 14mm head bolts and finally put the nut onto the lower bolt. Done....you have new suspension on your v37!
    • And now to the front.  No pics of the 3 nuts holding the front struts on, they are easy to spot. Undo 2 and leave the closest one on loosely. Underneath we have to deal with the wiring again, but this time its worse because the plug is behind the guard liner. You'll have to decide how much of the guard liner to remove, I undid the lower liner's top, inside and lower clips, but didn't pull it full off the guard. Same issue undoing the plug as at the rear, you need to firmly push the release clip from below while equally firmly gripping the plug body and pulling it out of  the socket. I used my fancy electrical disconnect pliers to get in there There is also one clip for the wiring, unlike at the rear I could not get behind it so just had to lever it up and out.....not in great condition to re-use in future.
    • Onto the rear lower shock mount. It's worth starting with a decent degrease to remove 10+ years of road grime, and perhaps also spray a penetrating oil on the shock lower nut. Don't forget to include the shock wiring and plug in the clean.... Deal with the wiring first; you need to release 2 clips where the wiring goes into the bracket (use long nose pliers behind the bracket to compress the clip so you can reuse it), and the rubber mount slides out, then release the plug.  I found it very hard to unplug, from underneath you can compress the tab with a screwdriver or similar, and gently but firmly pull the plug out of the socket (regular pliers may help but don't put too much pressure on the plastic. The lower mount is straightforward, 17mm nut and you can pull the shock out. As I wasn't putting a standard shock back in, I gave the car side wiring socket a generous gob of dialectric grease to keep crap out in the future. Putting the new shock in is straightforward, feed it into at least 1 of the bolt holes at the top and reach around to put a nut on it to hold it up. Then put on the other 2 top nuts loosely and put the shock onto the lower mounting bolt (you may need to lift the hub a little if the new shock is shorter). Tighten the lower nut and 3 upper nuts and you are done. In my case the BC Racing shocks came assembled for the fronts, but the rears needed to re-use the factory strut tops. For that you need spring compressors to take the pressure off the top nut (they are compressed enough when the spring can move between the top and bottom spring seats. Then a 17mm ring spanner to undo the nut while using an 8mm open spanner to stop the shaft turning (or, if you are really lucky you might get it off with a rattle gun).
    • You will now be able to lift the parcel shelf trim enough to get to the shock cover bolts; if you need to full remove the parcel shelf trim for some reason you also remove the escutcheons around the rear seat release and you will have to unplug the high stop light wiring from the boot. Next up is removal of the bracket; 6 nuts and a bolt Good news, you've finally got to the strut top! Remove the dust cover and the 3 shock mount nuts (perhaps leave 1 on lightly for now....) Same on the other side, but easier now you've done it all before
