hey guys,

just doing some research before i get a set of G4 coilovers from just jap :D

i basically want a set that will go the lowest in ride height

its just for a street driven skyline R33 so spring rate cant be too stiff

basically ive looked around and the Tein coilovers dont drop the car height as much as the G4's so im asking if anyone knows of any brand coilover's that will drop the car lower than the G4's (currently only drop it max 12cm from stock)

looks like this on the lowest setting:

you help is most appreciated :)

thanks

If you are planning on driving it around that low spring rates won't matter anyway as you are more or less on the bump stops.

I gather handling is not an objective.

Ever thought of bags?

Try doing a search, you will find feedback from quite a few guys who have tried and rejected G4's

The limit on height is not what spring/shock unit you use. What stops you is the suspension geometry, it turns to shit.

Impossible, the lower you go the higher spring rate you must have. Springs absorb impacts, from bumps, speed humps, pit holes, ripple strips etc etc. As you shorten the spring you reduce the amount of travel to absorb those impacts. If you run a soft spring rate it simply doesn't have enough resistence to absorb the impact and it slams into the bumps stops, pretty soon destroying them. Then the shock bottoms out and destruction of the internal valving occurs. There is no nothing to abosrkb the impacts so they are passed directly into the chassis, which starts to crack around the mounts. One day the cracks join up and a shiocjh shafts stick up though the bonnet.

Simple, remove springs and shocks and replace with 4" x 2" piece of timber, cut timber to desired height.

looks like this on the lowest setting:

Evil handling, dangerous, slow accelerating and has no braking performance to speak of. But hey it looks good, to the uneducated, the rest of us laugh our heads off. :laughing-smiley-014: :laughing-smiley-014: :laughing-smiley-014:

ok.. thanks for that. I will keep it in mind...

and ive did a search and read about the G4's being really stiff.. :P

edit** just realised 120mm is 4.7" lower from stock which is enough for me :)

thanks guys!!

looking for second hand set if anyone has one before i get a new set off just jap :D

thanks again!

freind of mine bought g4's for his car u13 bluebird (now sold) they werent all that stiff and they were extremely low and nowhere near the lowest setting.

but why would you want it that low?? would be a pain to drive you would have to stop at every speed hump and driveway.

ok.. thanks for that.

more interested in the ride height :P

Maybe I wasn't blunt enough, you can't have an R33GTST that height (as in the picture) and expect anything other than very rough ride. That's the facts.

thanks gary i edited my post and also read up on your posts on other threads when i did a search :D

basically i want a 2" drop from stock for street driving then be able to adjust it to be decked for show :P

wasnt planning on driving that low 24-7 :)

Response amended. You can't have a 2" drop in an R33GTST and expect anything other than a rough ride.

i've got buddy club coilovers in my r34, couldnt be happier. Gives a nice firm feel, and is dampner adjustable to soften it up if need be.

Has HEAPS of height adjustment, shits all over my bros teins in his r33, so for a show look you could dump it quite easily to the height in the photo, but like previously said, it would be on bump stops the whole time and would ride like poo which doesnt make any sence when you just spent 2k on decent suspension to make the car ride better

Go coilovers, not g4, and you'll be happy

If your interested I have a set of adjustable coil-overs in my GTR. At the moment I have them raised as high as possible and the car is just street legal. Droped down they would give you the kind of look your after. Not sure about the tyre wear though. Let me know if your interested.

    • Sounds like you've got an interesting adventure ahead here with local support if you have trouble! My guess is that, unboosted, you will be OK with a small upgrade like -9. What will happen is that once the stock ECU sees more airflow than it expects it will add a heap of fuel and pull a heap of timing to be safe because it can't understand how it could get that much air without there being an issue. You will see clouds of black smoke and it won't pull hard through the midrange and top end. So, overall it will be a bit frustrating but should be OK. If you are still nervous set the base timing back 2o through the CAS, but it will be even more sluggish everywhere. As said above through...this is not my guarantee your engine won't be blown into a million pieces, leaving you looking for very hard to find parts A better idea is get a computer with logging ASAP, wire in a wide band O2 sensor and a use remote tuner. I've done multiple cars this way and while it is not as good as a specific tune on a dyno they can get it 90% right. I'd suggest if you can afford an R33 GTR these days you can afford an ECU and tune. And if you can't afford that you sure won't be able to afford the rebuild if it goes bad in the meantime,.
    • Yeah it would be nice if someone took the time to put that sort of information together, but there are a lot of variations in looms. I think you are making this way hard for yourself if you just want to get it running....sourcing an SR20 with the right wiring will be a billion times easier than matching the RB loom to an S15 chassis. If you do end up going this way, you just need to trace every wire in the loom with a multimeter, 95% of them will go to a location you can confirm at the ECU.....and then post it up for the next person who needs it
    • Just top it up with water, and keep a general idea of how much you added. It is normal for water to be pushed into and pulled out of the reservoir through the cap, and it should not be more than half full or it will be likely to overflow when hot. Any decent mechanic can do a pressure test of the cooling system to confirm if you have a leak. Keep in mind if it is only leaking a little and when hot it may well evaporate before you see it hit the ground
    • I'd ask the shop what they used and use that. Mixing coolants is sometimes OK, sometimes not, and you have know the details of each coolant to know whether it's a good idea or not.
    • Is it alright to top up with just another green coolant?
