Hi guys,

According to the Burson's book the R31 clutch fan is compatible with the R33 clutch fan.

The R33's clutch fan was slipping very badly, even at temperature it could be held with 1 finger while idling and after been let go it would not start moving for about 5 or 10 seconds.

The problem is the R31 clutch fan has a shorter shaft, this causes it to hit the pulley behind it on the R33 GTR. And its also about 3-4cm away from the radiator itself.

Can anyone confirm if they have managed to fit an R31 clutch fan to an R33 GTR?

I've heard of it fitting on non-GTR's, the only way I can see it fitting is finding a way to replace the bolts (studs) that come from behind the pulley with longer ones.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Gareth

dont have an answer for your question but i have a spare clutch fan (taken out at 90k) from an r33 gtr that you can have for 120 posted if you are interested.

swapped mine for a brand new unit when i was told it was the cause of my overheating problem

turned out it was my radiator being blocked.

cheers

I spent about $140 on the clutch fan and $45 on the fan so I'd prefer to make it fit but if I can't do it I will consider your offer.

Do you know if the clutch fan you have is tight? I mean I don't want to replace my R33 clutch fan with one that is not tight...

Has anyone done this before?

I know there are some posts about R31 clutch fans fitting R33's on this forum...

Ah found this post from Bl4cK32:

with the clutch - the only one that is a direct replacement is the rb30et one.

In RB30 clutch fan

I think he has some of the information confused that clutch fan that fits correctly has a longer/thinner shaft.

The RB30E shaft is very short, which means it will not fit on an R33....

So I think I need an RB30ET clutch fan, hopefully I can get that on Tuesday.

Anyone need an RB30E clutch fan?

Happy Easter!

Regards,

Gareth

I understand you have already spent the money but IMO, you would be better off just biting the bullet and replacing it with a new 33 GTR one.

The RB30 clutches are pretty shit, and in combination with an older fan design, they are massively noisy (think truck) and drain a stack of power in the bottom end of the rev range and thats bad enough on a 3 litre bottom end.

Out of interest, how much were you quoted for the replacement GTR one?

I haven't checked with Nissan yet, everyone who had been quoted was somewhere around $450 or so.

Are you sure that it "drains" power in the lower end of the rev range?

The only difference with the fan is it has 7 blades rather than 9 and they are more curved...

I mean, a brand new RB30 clutch fan should be similar in efficiency to a brand new R33 one shouldn't it?

Or are you saying the fan is less efficient?

Anyway, we finally found it, bought a Dayco(?) unit that fits a Nissan Pathfinder I believe, please confirm before you buy it, I'm not 100% sure on which one was bought.

Unfortunately it costs $300 but it does fit the R33 fan, so it appears to be the same as the Nissan one. This was bought from Burson's but I don't think $300 is the retail price.

Good luck to anyone else who has this problem.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.

    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
