hey poeples, who here has got a piggyback ecu on there n/a, and what sort of power you getting, and how good your fuel economy is, i want to get e manage set up on mine but is it worth it? does it make much difference on an n/a? im after 600km a tank, is it possible?

just a quick note i own the neo6 r34

its possible...

you really need a decent tuner, lean the car out (into high 13's flat 14) at low throttle, and under heavy throttle/WOT as lean as possible without your egt's getting too high.

alot of tuners are scared and live by the doughy rich 11:1 'safe' tunes, a decent tune with a decent engine should be able to hold 14:1 at WOT on an N/A. (I know of a 500hp n/a that ran this)

so hunt a good tuner, not a 'drift' one, maybe somone a little older, into motorsport, and lean away giving it as much timing as you can, that alone should net you a fair bit better economy. Also pushing it into closed loop as often as possible.

ontop of that, you could run even leaner, and run water injection (water is free) to cool your egt's - im currently playing around with this for my 30de (alot of timing, high compression and lean a/f mixes).

I dont have a piggy back, but from a recent trip to thredbo, 5th gear the whole way i used 38litres to 450k's.

City driving i can expect a max of around 500k's to a tank, i would also be interested if a management system would improve fuel.

the regardless of ecu/piggy back, it is only good as it's tuner. there's nothing else really.

i would check the power/dyno thread for more details, because that's what it's there for!!!

using the safc 2, how many kms do you get out of a tank.

450km aggressive tune. check out the power thread for a list of mods.

to be honest, fuel economy is pretty crap. a turbo's efficiency is so much better in terms of driving off boost in the city, and on boost whilst tracking it.

unless you have quite a few mods which is out of the scope of the stock ecu and you wish to clean up the AFRs a bit i personally wouldn't be too phased.

one of the reasons for the SAFC2 was to have the knock sensor when on track.

It will depend on how you drive if you drive hard all the time economy will be poor, on the other hand if you drive it easy with the odd blat here or there economy will be better. Avoid short trips only drive medium to long.

I have a stock R34 N/A with the Neo 6 motor, 5 speed manual & I can get about 550K's before the low feul light comes on, I drive it easy & only drive medium to long trips.

I am thinking of fitting cruse control to help with economy [have had cruse on my other cars & got good economy out of them].

When I get it serviced I will talk with my mechanic about leaning it off  abit.

damn thats some good milage, ok when you say take it easy when driving, isnt it bad for the skylines to shift to early and drive it at low rpm? at which rpm do you change gears? i average mine at 3000 rpm all the time, and yeah my fuel ecomony is non existent, i think i might need on of those safc's and get some tuning of some sort going

It really goes more by throttle and load than revs, for example - if your shifting at 3000rpm, and using half throttle to accelerate on gear change (to pull it from ~ 2000rpm to 3000rpm again) its actually more efficient to rev it to 4000rpm using less throttle.

i.e. its more efficient to rev the car at 4000rpm on 1/4 throttle than at 3000rpm half throttle, as the motors in its power/torque. The idea is to use less acceleration, if you go revving it to 4k on half throttle, it'll use more petrol. When I'm tight for cash or babying the car to make it to the servo, i just drive as if 10% throttle is WOT, so if your in low revs and the car isn't accelerating, shift back.

its all about airflow, more air = more petrol, so the more air your letting in, the more fuel can be added, but at the same time, the higher its revving, the more air thats is sucked from the same throttle opening. There are other variables, like high load = richer fuel mix, too high revving will make too much friction etc.

I usually drive with a fairly active throttle, fairly heavy on take off, but as the engine revs & power increase, i keep lowering the throttle, so the engine essentially holds the same power. But at the same time, i have my fun and give it the stick fairly regularly. On my last 2 cars (both N/A RB30's, one auto one manual) i happily got 550km till fuel light (about 50-55L) this includes a fair bit of hwy cruising though (to and from work).

I don't know how your getting such bad economy, check your 02 sensor, clean or replace your coolant temp sensor, don't thrash it when its cold (richer fuel mixture), if all else fails, get a safc tuned lean on the dyno at low throttle, should be safe.

is that 450km of highway driving or just normal suburban driving? if it's just 450km of suburban stop/start driving then it's not too bad... I've fixed alot of stuff on my car and I just did a cruise yesterday and got 600km from my tank (10L/100km) and could get about 700km if I do only highway driving. Don't get an SAFC until you're 100% sure that any problems are fixed... tuning over the top of problems isn't a good idea and you'll get better results if you're 100% sure your car is upto spec. Usually the problems that cause poor fuel economy are just sensor related, it's just a case of tracking down the sensor that is playing up and fixing it.

thanks for the replys, my car also has slight backfires when at low throttle when its slowing down, it sounds hot for a n/a ;):D but yeah its never good for the ecomony, that why i reckon it need a good tune, im gonna assume its burning more fuel then it needs to if it has slight backfires, which gurgles as i slow down, what you guys n gals reckon about this?

    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.  
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
    • I assume clearances were all a-okay?
    • Shock tower brace is in +5Kw....LOL
