Just wondering who in Newcastle has been defected, what for and did you have an eng certificate??

I was defected at 8am on a sunday morning (30/12/07) driving to work- got signalled into an rbt station with 2 officers, female officer rbt'd me and i blew 0.0. I was about to drive away when the male officer came over and tapped my boot, telling me to open the bonnet (OH SHIT METHINKS)

He then spent 5 minutes looking thru my engine bay for stuff to defect (didnt really look like he knew much about engines)

After closing the bonnet and him finding nothing, he started to walk back toward his patrol car, and said something about me having a 'bit of a cannon exhaust'. He got down under my car and measured the ride height from my 3.5" exhaust to the ground.

He measured it to be 80mm from the ground, with the legal requirement being 100mm, and defected me for it (no fine). He then tried to give me 48 hours to get it cleared, and I pointed out that it was the middle of the holiday period, and gettin anything fixed would be near impossible. Ended up giving me 14 days to clear it.

Well I feel better now...So

So far we have more Newcastle people not being defected than people being defected...

And I am not having a go at you callan but an exhaust that is 80mm off the ground is very noticeable and asking for attention...I appreciate that 3.5" is tight under the rear subframe but I would have thought you could of got it higher than 80mm unless you car is horribly low...Once again I am not having a go and I hope you got it sorted...

I am just trying to find out what sort things the cops pick on in Newcastle...I have standard height GTSt and the stats so far suggest I will be fine (or lets say ok instead of 'fine')

youse are all soft...i was there last Sunday trawling the strip. No attention at all (the lower hunter commander has even attended Autosalon to see our car on the dyno)

So was this a one-off or are we likely to see you again soon? I've been wanting to see your wild beast up close. ;)

Yeah i know :(

Most of the exhaust was fine - 120mm clearance, but where it dipped under the rear axle, it dropped a few cms, and whoever had fitted the exhaust didnt do such a great job (was how I bought the car)

It's all sweet now, have a custom 3" on it now, tucked right up and painted so shouldn't be drawing any attention anymore :)

I had some wankers last Sunday pull up along side and yell "fu(king whipper snipper" out the window as i was turning left.

Its about the only heat ive had in Newy.

The only time ive ever been pulled up was when i was back living at the Bay, and that was Christmas time. They followed me in an unmarked car from my home at Soldiers Point into Nelson Bay. Just before they were about to turn off i gave it a little squirt up a hill, they pulled me up and said "oh you were doing oh so well until you did that...see that block of units there (points to a block of units 1/2 way up the hill) well the people that live there are all now awake!" Told me to take it more steady and behave myself. I think the fact i was a local and from a well known local family hepled me a little. I think if i was of ethnic origin from Sydney i may have been treated very differently.

What did you get defected for?

just rims and height. and by height i mean where the exhaust goes under the diff it was 9.4 cms off the ground and the limit is 10cms. if they let me take the passanger out of the back i would have been fine. nothing big tho cleared it this morning

just rims and height

What about your rims got you done?

Its amazing how many cops don't know the law when it comes to rims.

I think everyone with big aftermarket wheels should print out the RTA's Vehicle Standards Information #09 - Guidelines for Alternative Wheels and Tyres and leave it in their car.

There's no rule about diameter changes, just width and offset, and diameter of the tyre.

I quote:

An important requirement for all replacement wheels is that the wheel track must not be increased by more than 25mm beyond the maximum specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle [as listed on the tyre placard].

Which means you can run an offset 12mm lower than the stock wheel while retaining compliance.

Wheels up to 26mm wider than the largest optional wheel recommended by the vehicle manufacturer for the vehicle can be fitted without the need to notify the RTA.

The outside diameter of the wheel and tyre combination must be no more than 15mm over the largest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle and not more than 15mm below the smallest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle.

(Emphasis added)

The VSI's used to say that you can only run tyres 26mm wider than the widest available on the placard too, but it doesn't anymore.

You can run 20" rims on your R32 if you want, as long as they're no more than an inch wider than stock and you get tyres with a low enough profile to match the original outside circumference, and as its a "minor change" it does not require registration with the RTA nor an engineer's certificate.

Highlight those bits, and make sure you do the calculations on paper to prove your new rolling stock is with 15mm circumference of what's on the placard.

i gave it a little squirt up a hill, they pulled me up and said oh you were doing oh so well until you did that...

Mum told me that happened after you spoke to her hehe.

Have you been into their new office? Its now got a widescreen and PS3 in the waiting room for clients to use while they wait!!

I've had a cop try and book me the day my car got a blueslip. I was literally driving home from the RTA, with brand new plates on the car, the blueslip in the passenger seat. I did kind of wave it in his face, snatch my license back out of his hands (he was being an arse) and say some unflattering things. Not one of my better moments. That car sort of got victimised for RBTs quite alot till it died. IT kind of became amusing as everytime I drove it through warners bay I'd get pulled over. A young cop was always seeming to be doing the RBT and he was always so apologetic about it and seemed nervouse about it all. I used to just look in the mirror and see who was riding shotgun. Oh this car was a Datsun Stanza with no mods at all by the way.

Other then that the average age of the cars I currently own is 70 (hell currently I own 5 cars with an average age of 30. Oldest is 70 and the youngest is Dec 07 - Totaly will soon be down to 2 registered cars and one project. My wife hopes anyway) and I've been through a few of the blitz in newcastle. I've found three things happened. The cop would look at the car and me the driver and wave me through (usually what would happen in the zed - Older cops like those old girls (76 260Z), they would pull me over open the bonnet do a walk around, comment on trye wear and send me on my way (they have no idea what they are looking at and unless its spitting fluids there isn't alot they can do as the car predates most of the ADRs they book people on) or if its the old girl (the 38') want to have a look at whats done cause they have always wanted to build one.

Its the newer cars that kills you in defect blitzes. So many rules and regulations to abide by and unless you build out there cars you've probably never even seen half the rules and they know that. So they defect to that. You'll never see them try and defect a hotrod as most owners of hotrods know the ADRs back the front and sideways as they have built their cars to get around the ADR problems unique to them. It would be a costly conversation if they did try though.

Aye.

One of the guys I worked with had a 1969 Mini Cooper S. Extractors, straight through pipe to a Lukey rear muffler. The thing sounded really mean.

Because his car was manufactured pre-ADR enactment he can get away with almost anything. Its not like the cops would be aware of what the rules were back in 1969.

they are 19s n he said they were too big for my car. the offset and width are the same.

Yeah the old school cars are easy to get around adr's cos there wasn't any back then. I have a 1970 val ute and I don't think I even need to have seatbelts in it!

The funny thing about the defects blitzes and stuff is that there have always been hoons on the road, its just these days there is a whole lot of media hype giving car enthusiasts a bad name. So the government has brought in more laws yadda yadda yadda. My old man used to tell me stories of when the boys would be on the piss at the pub and before they DROVE home they would lay a few skids and do a few doughnuts in the carpark! :)

The foreshore or its proximaty has been a cruise strip for near on 60 years as far as I can tell. My mother and father told stories from their childhood about it too. It is all media hype. Mind you if I owned your val Smitty I'd put retractable belts into it. Didn't need to put them in the hot rod but she got 5 retractable seatbelts (2 front 3 back) with pre tensioners, the pillars in the shell reineforced to take the impact from a crash and double burst proof locks. I like to hoon but I like my passengers to be safe too.

    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
    • Also, I logged some data from the ECU for each session (mostly oil pressures and various temps, but also speed, revs etc, can't believe I forgot accelerator position). The Ecutek data loads nicely to datazap, I got good data from sessions 2, 3 and 4: https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-2?log=0&data=7 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-3?log=0&data=6 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-4?log=0&data=6 Each session is cut into 3 files but loaded together, you can change between them in the top left. As the test sessions are mostly about the car, not me, I basically start by checking the oil pressure (good, or at least consistent all day). These have an electrically controlled oil pump which targets 25psi(!) at low load and 50 at high. I'm running a much thicker oil than recommended by nissan (they said 0w20, I'm running 10w40) so its a little higher. The main thing is that it doesn't drop too far, eg in the long left hand fish hook, or under brakes so I know I'm not getting oil surge. Good start. Then Oil and Coolant temp, plus intercooler and intake temps, like this: Keeping in mind ambient was about 5o at session 2, I'd say the oil temp is good. The coolant temp as OK but a big worry for hot days (it was getting to 110 back in Feb when it was 35o) so I need to keep addressing that. The water to air intercooler is working totally backwards where we get 5o air in the intake, squish/warm it in the turbos (unknown temp) then run it through the intercoolers which are say 65o max in this case, then the result is 20o air into the engine......the day was too atypical to draw a conclusion on that I think, in the united states of freedom they do a lot of upsizing the intercooler and heat exchanger cores to get those temps down but they were OK this time. The other interesting (but not concerning) part for me was the turbo speed vs boost graph: I circled an example from the main straight. With the tune boost peaks at around 18psi but it deliberately drops to about 14psi at redline because the turbos are tiny - they choke at high revs and just create more heat than power if you run them hard all the way. But you can also see the turbo speed at the same time; it raises from about 180,000rpm to 210,000rpm which the boost falls....imagine the turbine speed if they held 18psi to redline. The wastegates are electrically controlled so there is a heap of logic about boost target, actual boost, delta etc etc but it all seems to work well
    • hahah when youtube subscribers are faster than my updates here. Yes some vid from the day is up, here:  Note that as with all track day videos it is boring watching after the bloopers at the start.  The off was a genuine surprise to me, I've literally done a thousand laps around the place and I've never had instability there; basically it rolled into oversteer, slipped, gripped and spat me out. On the way off I mowed down one of the instructor's cones and it sat there all day looking at me with accusing cone eyes as I drove past. 1:13:20 was my fastest lap, and it was in the second session, 3rd lap.  It (or me!) got slower throughout the day as it got hotter.
