Retard the timing down low?!!!

YES.... you can lower spool by retarding the timing down low. This is because the petrol is still igniting when the exhaust valve opens so you get hotter more expanded air comming out the exhaust which helps with spool. But obviously lowers the low end power a bit... depends on what you want really.

I lowered the spool on my old KKR480 by 1000RPM by doing this, but ofcourse its not really good for the turbo as it will run hotter for that brief moment that its in low revs. Also when I did it on my car I set it so that it would only do it if you had over 80% throttle so when daily driving it had good timing.

Go and retard your timing right back as far as possible, I bet the turbo will kick in really quick and probably get it really hot and most likley over boost past what the wastegate is set to. But obviously the car will run like shit....

tuning can make the turbo come on more progressively and wake it up

but i think there is something missing to the puzzle, a tune will certinaly help

but i suspect theres another reason - check the basics

look for pipework leaks, cracked hoses, leaking vac lines etc

screw the actuator to 1 bar... wont even need to run the gay bleed valve then. This well help it ramp up hard for sure (check it on dyno for inj duty - my injectors (standard) were still good for 230rwkw (@ 1.2 bar with standard ecu and HKS fuel cut defender with hks 2530) - although your turbo should make more than mine did...

Yer bleed valve got the arse today.

Played with the actuator adjustment before. Added some pre load its making .9bar, Seems to come on abit harder but still full boost at roughly 5krpm.

I brought the car with a r32 gktech intercooler kit included. I may redo the pipes to suit a31 and put that on. If anyone has seen softy/phil's ceffy they'd know how dodgey the evo setup is :D

I kinda agree partially with you there...a richer denser mixture would help spool the turbo up quicker...however i do not see the benefits of retarding the ignition timing down low as you have mentioned the low end suffers...and by quite a fair bit...

If we are talking about turbo spool alone then yes perhaps retarding the timing might help...but if all we want is just a richer mixture then wouldn't it make more sense to just richen up the mixture down low instead of retarding timing? also...i agree its gonna run hot as retarded timing does make the engine run hot...not a very good thing if you ask me...

I'd personally be more inclined to run as much timing as you can down low without detonation...running the engine as efficiently as possible improves power, torque and response...best case scenario for the engine...and as mentioned before...if his boost response is bad...it probably shows that there are restrictions in his system which should be sorted out first...restrictions plus alot of heat is not a good idea...

    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks
    • Hi Guys, Does anyone know any aftermarket part numbers for a starter motor to suit the VQ25DET? I can find lots of alternative part number for the VQ35DE, which I assume would fit, but there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Thanks..
    • I don't understand how this hasn't boiled down to - Upgrade the turbo when you have everything required. ECU, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, etc. Do it all at once.  If you don't have everything required, just enjoy the car as it is and keep saving up your pennies.
