Gday All,

I'm moving to Tassie within a couple of weeks.

Last night I was watching an Ignition DVD and they made the comment that there is no 98RON fuel in Tassie?!?

Is this true or not? I just checked BP's site and it says there is BP Ultimate down there, but I'd like comfirmation from some locals.

Also I'm having some more work done on my R34 and a dyno tune just before I leave, so in the event that I'm going to have permanant problems getting 98 down there I'd rather tune the car with a tank of 95 instead, for obvious reasons.

So, whats the go down there? Naturally I'm hoping that the big 3 fuel companies do supply the good stuff down there!

Cheers

Yeah pretty much every BP in Hobart sells ultimate. I assume itll be the same for Launceston or anywhere else. For some stupid reason Shell or anybody else hasnt got their act together on it yet, oh well, less business for them!!

hey mate yeh they do sell BP Ultimate. where abouts u movin too?

Hi Trent,

Good to see Ignition is wrong :)

I'm probably moving to St Helens initially (pending approval from owner who better hurry the f*ck up with an answer), just to rent

but I'm actually looking to buy property somewhere.

I havent decided where to buy just yet except to say somewhere semi-rural, it won't be in the Hobart or Launceston metro areas.

Will be glad once this move is over...

Thanks for the replies everyone, looks like I have nothing to worry about fuel-wise :)

And yeah, supply has been patchy up here too.

Shell hasnt had any all year, BP has been patchy and I've recently been using Caltex Vortex 98 quite a bit, my car seems to like it as much as the BP Ulitmate.

I'll have to start reading the Tassie section more often to suss out what the boys in blue are like in terms of defecting, and the regs in general down there.

oh and roadworthys for rego when the time comes.

I try to keep my 34 low key in terms of any outrageous mods but of course technically speaking its probably not roadworthy...

So far just FMIC, turbo booster, panel filter, exhaust (Varex though), staggered wheels. I do plan for a new turbo however, will have to do that later as I ran out of time to get it done up here (CRD has been doing all work on my car so far).

I don't drive like a hoon - unless the mood takes me (as it does occaisonally) and I am somewhere quiet/remote

Also will need to change plates (obviously) and am trying to find a good custom plate that hasnt been taken already...

I noticed the buggers have upped the prices very recently too - over a grand for a letter only plate :\

Anyway, enough rambling... Look forward to meeting you all in the near future ;)

Cheers

Yeah should be able to get Ultimate anywhere, I filled up somewhere on the east coast and got it..

I have gone back to Caltex's Vortex '95' though, my car seems to go better on it than what we are sold as 'Ultimate'.

Hay Wayne,

I live in Scamander when im not at uni (10-15mins south of St Helens) and work/hang out in St Helens. BP there is open 24 hours and it sells Ultimate at about the same price per litre as Hobart :D

As far as the cops go mate i've never had any problems with being pulled over/defects etc up the coast...they're more interested in booking bogans hooning round in old commodores nd such rather than hassling us guys that look after and take pride in our cars...even if we have a few mods that arent exactly legal :D haha

Im a bit biased as i moved there as a kid about 18 years ago but the east coast is a great place to live mate, have you already lined up a job?

Hmm, now that is more than a little suspicious

If it keeps happening to you I wouldnt mind knowing (by PM perhaps) what servo(s) I should avoid...

No way should you car run worse on a higher octane fuel???

Thanks for the info mate, St Helens sounds pretty good to me :)

I havent been to Tassie for a few years so my memory of St Helens is a little rusty, other than to say I know that whole area is nice.

Well it is 99.9% confirmed we have approval from the owners of the property that we can rent it for a few months, which is a relief... one less thing to have to do!

I'm surprised the BP is 24 hours, which is handy.

Sounds like no problems with the cops, which is good (unless you're a bogan I guess

Not chasing work at this stage, to cut a long story short... and when I will be I'll be self employed anyway, so no problem there.

Thanks again for the info mate, might have to go for a cruise one day? Cheers

  • 3 weeks later...

Just an update - I arrived a bit earlier than planned.

Basically as soon as the removalists did their thing on the 15th, I thought bugger it - I'm heading south right now...

So I booked onto the Spirit of Tasmania, arrived in Port Melbourne on the 16th and arrived in St Helens on the morning of the 17th - exactly the same time as the Targa hit the town as well

I was lucky to get in just before the roads were closed...

So if you see a black R34 with NSW plates...it's me, say hello if you can.

I already ordered the new personalised Tassie plates last week, hehe :(

Glad to see the 98RON is plentiful down here.

Catchyas!

Think we were on Spirit with you????? We were in the heavily overloaded pearl silver Aristo from QLD.

Does your 34 has the left inboard tail light half dull. (very very nice car, loved the exhausts)

Most certainly will :)

Did an oil change today, was well overdue too so I compensated by using Motul 300V

Anyway, I might take the 34 out tomorrow down the east coast, maybe all the way to Hobart, as I still havent been there since I arrived a month ago.

She's got a nice new set of Targa Tasmania plates as well now :)

Yeah, sounds like my 34, has the Xforce Varex muffler with the twin pipes.

I arrived in Devonport on April 17 if that helps?

Were you the guy who spoke to me before we left Pt Melbourne??

Cheers

    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
    • My experience with Rising Sun Exports Before agreeing to the sale I tried to do as much research as I could (obviously), his Facebook reviews are 98% and he goes Live at least once or twice a week. I contacted 2 people in the UK who had used him for their imports, both had positive feedback. His explanation and talk through of the import process was thorough, answering any query no matter how stupid it was. It felt as soon as the money was sent, communication dropped off. I asked for shipping updates every 2 weeks or so, not wanting to pester him, he never had any updates. I wasn't informed the car had been dropped off at the port, I only found out by his Facebook story. I asked for the photos taken at the port, knowing he would need some for insurance purposes. I received a few 5 second clips and that's it. When asked again, he said his staff had them. Weeks later I asked again, he tells me he doesn't have any, but does have 50 photos from the original advert. I never received them. I eventually got the documents sent via WhatsApp after I mentioned the port was requesting them. I purchased a CarVX report, to find out the vehicle is a Grade R with recorded accident damage, first recorded in 2017 when it was first auctioned. He never told me the grade, then again I didn't ask. His response was "Grade R means nothing, it wasn't chassis damage". Still, I would have liked to have been informed about it. Jon prides himself on being open and honest when it comes to inspecting cars, it's his main job doing so at the auctions for customers. When the vehicle arrived in the UK I noticed a few little cosmetic issues. It's a 21 year old car so it wasn't going to be mint condition. The side skirts are cracked on each corner and the sealant is failing. The front grill on the bonnet/hood isn't secured very well, mounting studs are missing. Both minor things, but again, it would have been nice to be told. During a Facebook Live walk around video of the vehicle, he mentioned it has a front Whiteline anti roll bar/sway bar. While on the inspection ramp, I noticed the stock item has been installed. When first questioned, his response was "the ARB? Switched? Since when, it never had them". Since sending video and photo evidence I've not received a response. I'm probably being over critical of the overall condition of an old car, but all I wanted was honesty (which he claims to have). I'm aware I wasn't his only customer, he's busy doing XYZ but other reviews praise him for great communication with regular updates and photos, I felt I didn't receive the same treatment.
    • I was able to get some underside photos while the car was on the ramp The suspension is all Altezza/IS200/IS300 so getting part's will hopefully be less of a headache
