I'm in the market to buy a new turbo.

I'm looking at either a GT2510 or a GT2530.

I was leaning more so towards the GT2530 as I know it will make in excess of 200rwkw on a RB20DET.

What I don't know is how laggy they are.

I do know that with the GT2510 that they are rated at around 170-180rwkw but can be pushed to around 200rwkw with them starting to run out of breath up top a little.

(Well thats what I've been told anyhow)

The GT2510 also basically has no lag and is extremly responsive.

Now..

I'm after a street car that is extremly quick from say 0-160km/h.

Would I be better off going for the GT2510 or the GT2530.

Let me know ppls how laggy the GT2530 is if any... :O

It sounds like the GT2510 compares flow wise to the VG30DET Turbo.?!?!?

Thanx... :burnout:

go the 2530, both are new bb turbos and will be better designed than the std turbo, you would probably find there is very little difference between the turbos, does the 2530 have a bigger exhaust or compressor housing? The little extra lag will help you get traction when you take off. wouldnt want to change the thing then find the last few rpm are a waste of time as the turbo is out of breath.

Or maybe just go the 2510 then with my new turbo I can smoke you in the top end real easy.

2530 joel the 2510 is good but as you said its a vg30 turbo that I reckon spools up really early.

you not thinking about the hiflow rebuild of the stock turbo?

cause although they are expensive they seen to get the results!

you will need an hks version of the 2530 as the garret version only comes with a t25 flange I believe. I did some invesigating a while ago in to turbos.

the hiflow of the stock unit didnt sound to bad. I just got a shock on the price though.

I was waiting for your reply Meggala.. :O

I was thinking getting a proposed adaptor made up for it as I have been offered the GT2510 kit which is apparently a t25.

I haven't put much thought in to the rebuild as i've never really had any good luck when getting ppls to rebuild mechanical items.

Always some thing not quite right a rattle here or a grind/whine there.

It really depends as I can get the 2510 new never used for around $500 less than the rebuild with the adaptor made.

hrmm... You've got me thinking about the rebuild again now.. Less hassles no modifications... DOH...

Its a tough call I know I still considering it I have the injectors waiting and a z32 afm as well. But I'm un sure I really want more than 200 rwkw from an rb20. I really liked mny vg30 turbo ands I have a sneaky thought that you will like the 2510. but one thing to consider are you going to do the rb 25/30 or is it a hope rather than a dream If you are going the rb25/30 later buy the turbo once and get a t3/4 if not the 2510 will be good. as I said Its a tough decision I'm looking like going for an rb25 turbo with steel wheels If I can or just with ceramic wheel dial in 13.5 psi with the actuator and be done with it. and may be in a year or so get a a wild set up but don't hold your breath for that.

wow...

Thanx DLuded ...

No.. I don't think the RB25/30 is going to be done..

It would be nice but I don't actually think the RB20 is that gutless down low well at least not with 25deg timing in to it.

It keeps up with traffic off boost and thats all that matters = fuel economy :O

I would like the top end of the 2530 but.

So tell me meggala is the top end still there or you can feel it drop off with the vg30?

Like at the moment it is as quick and i swear it was slightly quicker than andy's 33 gtr before I done the fuel pump as now it is running richer.

So with a 2510 good ecu remap it should really get up and go, heaps of wheel spinning torque in second?

Or if I want that should I go the 2530? :burnout:

Thanx ppls.. :(

I have for my car a HKS GT2535 . Can anyone give me any info on this turbo like how much bigger it is than a 2530 and how much smaller it is than a 2540 as you never hear much about this modle. All i have heard is that it should make 350hp in the meat of its eficiency and upto a max of 400 hp and that the 2535 and 2540 are slightly newer then the smaller modles.

JMS have made 220 rwkw using a 2530 so i hope to make simular results or better with a 2535.

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum.

JAPSIX -

Basically, the following turbos are listed at their approx. HP levels at the same boost pressure:

GT2510 = 300 PS

GT2530 = 320 PS

GT2535 = 340 PS

GT2540 = 350 PS

GT2540R = 360 PS

The attached graph might give you a little better indication of just how similar the HKS gt25 series are. (but thats a great turbo you have)

Joel -

I'm looking to do a turbo upgrade on my rb20det soon as well. :) Have you considered rebuilding the current rb20det turbo with a GT25 BB core? Not sure how much it would cost but would save having to muck around with flanges etc...

Ash.

I have looked in to the rebuild using a GT25 BB core from Bill at ATS In Adelaide.

He quoted $2150.

He said that he has tested a few different highflow and turbo setups on the rb20det with Tilbrooks and apparently the GT25 core is the way to go.

I think if i remember correctly that running 1 bar you could make around 210rwkw pretty easily.

But for the price..

Well I can pick up a bran new gt2510 for around $500 less.

And that is a bran new core and I never have really had tonnes of luck with rebuilt mech. items, so in a way i've been put off rebuild turbo's.

Has any one actually had first hand experience with the GT25 core on the RB20det?

hrmm I wonder if I would still have the boost drop problem with the GT25 core..

I probably would need a stronger spring wouldn't I??

Joel you are humming and harring quite a bit on your decision.

I think the small amout of lag u will produce wont affect pickup very much between the 2 HKS units its not like your putting in a GT40 :)

U can get used to a small bit of lag but u will be unhappy if your new 2510 doesnt give you results.

For example we just got my mates SR20 2.0 silvia (t25 as yours) hiflowed with T28 Replica steel wheels non ballbearing and his spools way quick and he is gone, i only catch him at 140kmh end of 3rd gear and mine just got dynoed at 201rwkw

He ran 12psi and front mount im spewin but dont tell him that :-)

I went around to the local ATS, JMS, and Tilbrooks.

This is on a RB20DET:

ATS:

1. HU?? There is no such thing as a GT2510.

2. The max the std RB20 housing made with GT25 Internals and approx 16-18psi worth of boost was 196rwkw with a tuned ecu. Power seemed to drop off up top but he doesn't know why. Should be good for 210rwkw.

3. He would do the GT2530 internals in the RB25 Turbo next time, and he claims it should be good for 210-220rwkw

----

JMS:

1. ATS's GT25 Internals arn't efficient and need to run to much boost Basically they don't work, it was one of this blokes car's that it was on.

2. He had a Nismo turbo that was a kind of custom job some how ?!?! that was inbetween a GT2510 and GT2530. But it was sold for $1500.

----

Tilbrooks:

1. He also said that ATS GT25 Internals didn't work in the RB20DET housing and he also said that don't bother with the std. garret as you need to run to much boost to get a decent rwkw GO HKS for $4000 bah.. too much.

(He tuned the RB20 gt25 turbo ATS Did)

2. He told me that I hav't got std injectors.. ?!?!?!

3. Also the Thermo's arn't mounted properly.

----

Would the std RB20DET housing cause the power to go flat at the top end?!?!

And Do you thing the RB25 Housing would fix this problem...

What a pain in the arse turbo selecting is.

I really don't want to spend 2k on ATS' 2530 internals and find that it chokes up top.

So about my injectors..

They are like a cream colour (plastic bit) with a red dot on them.

STD or Non Std?

Maybe that's why I've always run a little to rich?

The head has also been pulled off previously.

Help PPls...

will check my injectors tomorrow joel, glad I dont have to make your descision just have to put up with the lag when I put my turbo on.

Could just try and find a sh hks, I know there is a place in the city, on gilbert st i that imports parts and has a small shop and sellstuff cheap. it dosent matter what you do you will probably think of somethink better later just better to jo somethink ond they you cant change your mind.

Relax !

what about a garret GT25? they have different housings for higher topend flow, u choose which one depending on lag.

The rb25 t28 turbo holds alot more topend than an rb20 t25 turbo does but ofcourse u will feel it in response loss. yes to a degree u will still get a kinda flat curve with standard housing there is only so much air u can cram into it.

All skylines run pretty rich altho if u have a remapped ecu this should of fixed that. yep bigger injectors will make u run richer still......

cheers

now you know what I came across I had the money for one as well. but guess what it got ear marked buy the missus for something else :) as macka said don't stress to much about lagg.

you will need to think about a small gt 30 if you want it to bolt on or a t3/4 hiflow with ballbearing center.

you could try calling gcg in sydney they might have some idea's

I hate searching for a turbo.

or you could say stuff the lot of you and go get a t04 e with external gate and custom manifold and

:wizard:

meggala

Just buy a vg 30 turbo for 450 and go and have fun

Excellent info in this thread!

Joel, nice summary of your discussions with ATS, JMS and Tilbrook.

grepin, Chris32 and I were only talking about this stuff at the Autosalon. Someone we know bought that hybrid from JMS and is very happy (although hasn't put it on yet).

Yeah, turbo selection is a real headache because there isn't enough hard data out there that translates to how the motor will perform in the end!

Interesting comments from JMS and Tilbrook about the std Garrett not being responsive enough.

Good luck!

Freebaggin.

    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
    • So, a bit of a side trip, but one that might be interesting for people with JDM cars and japanese head units. I know @Pac previously posted about a carplay/android auto adapter he installed which used the AUX input, and @V35_Paul put in one of the Tesla style units that replace both screens. The option I went with was a Lsait LLT-YF-VER5.87_2 (https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Lsailt-8GB-Android-Multimedia-Interface-for_1601187633672.html). Price was $1,150 for a single unit although they are much cheaper if you are willing to buy 2....$857ea. Make you you get the version 2 not version 1, it is faster and has a better UI - this is the manufacturer listing: http://www.lsailt.com/product/348.html. BTW if you've never bought from Alibaba before, don't be concerned....these guys can't stay in business unless they are responsive, ship fast etc, they were excellent (probably faster shipping than most local places) So, this was my task for a lazy Sat afternoon....looks complex but was all done in a few hours (it probably helps that I had some of it apart before so it was a bit familiar). I also decided to add a HD USB drive recorded at the same time and the unit also supports an aftermarket reverse cam (if you don't want to retain factory) and also AV in and HDMI out It looks much worse than it is, in fact in was genuinely all plug and play (no custom wiring at all). This video was pretty good (skipped a few steps), unfortunately they are an Aussie seller but no longer sell this unit (I guess Carplay/AA adapters are easier to install and much cheaper) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5hJfYOB8Dg
