hey guys,

my car (R32 RB20DET) is about to get tuned (remap) and i'm still in doubt that i really need to upgrade to a Z32 air flow meter before i go ahead with it.

i'm aiming between 220-240rwkw with a TR43, injectors and the other usual mods. this will be at high boost levels. the RB20/RB25-s1 and the Z32 air flow meters are both 80mm. the only difference is the higher calibration.

my mechanics drift car has a reliable 260rwkw at the wheels on an RB25 with a standard series 1 (same as the RB20DET) air flow meter. it cops a beating all day on the track and has been fine since.

i have heard 2 main analogies:

1: the only difference between a standard sized afm and a Z32 afm is that the Z32 can be tuned in a finer and progressing manner higher in the rev/boost range.

2: the standard afm's max out at certain airflow levels and a Z32 is needed.

does anyone have proof (not heresay) that i actually need a Z32 afm to chase up to 250rwkw?

don't reply if you don't know from experience or theory, i'm after technical responses.

i would really appreciate opinions/responses from tuners.

a friend of mine had an R33 gtst stock internals, pfc, avcr, hks cooler, hks turbo, bigger injectors etc, it made 360+hp with stock afm. so depending on your power goals, i reckon u can keep it. just a good tune. i dont have any techinical advice, just giving what i have seen. i would also like to know the HP flow capabilites of the standard afm on RB20/25's?

Anyone can tune 'past' the AFM limit.

The Z32 just has a higher resolution, allowing for more airflow past it before its limit.

Every car is different. Wether you will or wont need an AFM @ that power level is debatable, and you wont know till you get there.

So you can either start spending tuning $$$ to find out its going to max, or bite the bullet and do it first. Either way it can go there

I have an Rb30det that maxes out the afm at 190 rwkw. but the car makes around 260rwkw. it can be done.

my previous setup was an RB20 making 240rwkw and it maxed out the afm too.

you can do it and it will max out the afm,

there are a few things you need to consider.

1. will the car be used in a colder climate than when the tune is done?

2. are you planning to drift it?

if your max target is 220rwkw and full boost is made after 4500rpm then it will be fine. otherwise go for a z32. it will not increase total power but it will make your tune safer.

    • I mean, I got two VASS engineers to refuse to cert my own coilovers stating those very laws. Appendix B makes it pretty clear what it considers 'Variable Suspension' to be. In my lived experience they can't certify something that isn't actually in the list as something that requires certification. In the VASS engineering checklist they have to complete (LS3/NCOP11) and sign on there is nothing there. All the references inside NCOP11 state that if it's variable by the driver that height needs to maintain 100mm while the car is in motion. It states the car is lowered lowering blocks and other types of things are acceptable. Dialling out a shock is about as 'user adjustable' as changing any other suspension component lol. I wanted to have it signed off to dissuade HWP and RWC testers to state the suspension is legal to avoid having this discussion with them. The real problem is that Police and RWC/Pink/Blue slip people will say it needs engineering, and the engineers will state it doesn't need engineering. It is hugely irritating when aforementioned people get all "i know the rules mate feck off" when they don't, and the actual engineers are pleasant as all hell and do know the rules. Cars failing RWC for things that aren't listed in the RWC requirements is another thing here entirely!
    • I don't. I mean, mine's not a GTR, but it is a 32 with a lot of GTR stuff on it. But regardless, I typically buy from local suppliers. Getting stuff from Japan is seldom worth the pain. Buying from RHDJapan usually ends up in the final total of your basket being about double what you thought it would be, after all the bullshit fees and such are added on.
    • The hydrocarbon component of E10 can be shittier, and is in fact, shittier, than that used in normal 91RON fuel. That's because the octane boost provided by the ethanol allows them to use stuff that doesn't make the grade without the help. The 1c/L saving typically available on E10 is going to be massively overridden by the increased consumption caused by the ethanol and the crappier HC (ie the HCs will be less dense, meaning that there will definitely be less energy per unit volume than for more dense HCs). That is one of the reasons why P98 will return better fuel consumption than 91 does, even with the ignition timing completely fixed. There is more energy per unit volume because the HCs used in 98 are higher density than in the lawnmower fuel.
    • No, I'd suggest that that is the checklist for pneumatic/hydraulic adjustable systems. I would say, based on my years of reading and complying with Australian Standards and similar regulations, that the narrow interpretation of Clause 3.2 b would be the preferred/expected/intended one, by the author, and those using the standard. Wishful thinking need not apply.
