I brought a "cheap" GTR got it checked out by a mate (mechanic) who actually knew the car at the time..

I knew what I could be getting my self into buying a GTR :P $5k rebuild if it breaks

I made sure the engine and running gear checked out, mine isn't built and it looks great inside and still going strong, the reason mine was cheap was because of the bad paintwork. But I didnt mind cause I always going to get it resprayed..and now have and gone white so look's a later model R32 :D

Get the engine and running gear fully checked out and compression tested..Also find out where the car has been tuned if you can and have a chat to the tuner ;)

GTR's under $20K aren't necessarily time bombs. I just sold mine, a 93 model with rebuilt engine, OS Giken twin plate, good rims etc for under $19K. New owner spoke to me 2 months later and was still stoked - everything good. Definately get it checked though, and check out the seller - young kid selling a GTR I'd be suss with!

      I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
