A friend of mine has a S1 RS4.

Basically the problem is as i have attempted to describe it in the title.

I have:

Wired the boost solenoid to earth (holds ~8psi)

Changed the plugs (to bcpr6es from memory) - all the old plugs looked pretty consistant in colour

Cleaned the AFM

Unrelated but i have changed the O2 sensor as well.

This issue has existed since he bought the car - im sure its not supposed to be like that.

Knock sensor issue?

Any other suggestions?

common problem

good choice of sparkies, but use industrial strength silicon sealant all around the coilpacks to stop wasted spark.

get bleed valve and set to 10psi

get turbo to cat dump pipe, 3" bellmouth, for $220, and a catback system (muffler and pipe for $300)

get panel air filter such as Pipercross, K&N etc (same as vr/vs commodore)

get safc, wire it in, change all fluids, and get it dynoed

should feel MUCH better, have better fuel economy (should), and more power

not too expensive, a grand and she'll be running smooth with around 140awkw

Having driven a few RB25DE 4wd stageas - this doesnt appear to go much better than one below 5500 rpm.

Even running roughly the same speed up a long hill. (same speed as a diesel st-x navara)

Will check ignition timing next i guess

it just has a basic paper filter at the moment (new)

187kw and 1700kg and auto will be slow no matter how you look at it.

lol

come for a spin in mine then..... whistles "this old girl she aint what she used to be, she aint what she used to be...." :ermm:

Mine always had more go at 3,000 rpm than 6,000 rpm, even when standard with 100 rwkw. Removing the 2 stage boost improved the 3,000 rpm performance much more than it did the 6,000 rpm performance. After many mods and double the power output it still pulls a whole lot harder at 3,000 rpm than it does at 6,000 rpm. When does yours develop the 8 psi? It should be 2,000 rpm. If not then you have a restriction somewhere, exhaust perhaps. My next guess would be ignition timing, so my suggestion for that would be to get a timing light and check it. Then check the camshaft timing. After that it is a leak down test to make sure the internals are OK, although if it doesn't use any oil then that is unlikely.

Cheers

I never double checked the boost at low rpms.

checked it around 3500 and it made 8psi no problems there

Next time he comes around i guess i will have to do get the timing light and compression tester out.

And for the suggestion from some about raising boost to 10psi - I'm hesitant to wind more boost into it while it doesn't feel like its responding well to what it has.

How do you rate the GCG turbo Gary?

    • Yes, I know🙄 but the sequential is not in my budget... don't want to reduce power neither, so looks like I'm stuck in the rabbit hole🤣
    • You’ll be very upset when you bust that too not to mention the gearing totally sucks. Don’t do it.
    • Is the panel filter one that is oiled? Have you ever cleaned or touched the AFM?
    • So.... the K&N air box thingo was too big, ended up gifting it to a mate, well, by gifting it he actually supplied food and beer at the pub,  which was nice, as it will not sit on a shelf in the garage for the next 10 years I did trim up some of the existing stuff to neaten it all up and gave it some wrinkle paint, unfortunately it currently has a used and abused mish mash of different types of hose clamps, 4 big fat T bolt type (shit), and a few normal clamps of vairing sizes and brands, but..... only until the 6 constant tension black worm clamps that I ordered from EFI solutions turn up next week Currently the current hose clamps are triggering me hard, LOL Is this the final version, probably not, I really want just 2 silicone pieces, a straight bit of silicone from the filter to the MAF is easy and will happen as soon as I head into Just Jap tomorrow, the problematic part is a 30° silicone bend from the MAF to the TB that I can connect the engine breather from the head, I found that there are bulk head fittings for boat bilge pumps that should work, but until I can get a 30° silicone bend the alloy pipe, and the 11ty thousand hose clamps, are there for the foreseeable future 4 hose clamps are golden, 6 are grudgingly acceptable, the 8 currently holding it all together is just taking the piss    I've also ordered 60 more retaining wall blocks for the front yard, I mis-gonculated the height that was required to get above the base of the Photinia's (red robin's) that are the hedge behind the front fence, currently it is 2 blocks high, and about 1/2 a block short, so going 3 blocks high will be above the base of the red robin's, and allow some room for mulch
