Hi all, I was talking to a Caltex oil rep at ag quip a couple of days ago, and he said one really good way to see if you oil is in need of changing is to feel it, grab some fresh oil (same as what is running in your car - I suppose only the poeple that service their own cars can do this) rub the oil from your fresh container and feel how "slippery" it feels.... now do the same for your engine - clean you fingers and rub the oil off the dipstick through your fingers and see if that oil is just as slippery... My fully synth oil has done 6000kms and it doesn't feel as near as slippery as the fresh stuff..... Oh well, time for a change.

i have been doing this for years....

i also look for carbon particles or water presence in the oil....i also smell the oil to see if it has been contaminated by fuel.....

but yeah i change oil and oil filter every 5,000 k's or 3 months which ever comes first.....

Sumo;

turbo's do run very rich and you can always smell the fuel in the oil, but extreme cases the fuel smell is very pungent and points to a problem.

oil in a turbo engine of mine once was so diluted that it was like 2 stroke fuel, i kid you not. I only discovered this when the head gasket blew, cylinders filled with this oil fuel mixture and seized the motor....but it was fun rebuilding that engine....hehehehe

so i guess since then i am a bit paranoid.

    • I've replaced the front brakes of my NA to 324 brembos and 350z calipers: i'm going for 225/40-18 up front and 245/35-18 in the back. I have Rays 7.5*19 ET35(225/35) in the front with 5mm spacers otherwise the calipers "lock up/ won't rotate". When i use the calculator i come up with 8*18 ET30 for 225/40...... but not sure i get problems with the calipers. Anyone riding around with 18 inch. that can confirm "that it'll fit"? In the back it's 7.5*9 ET30 (245/30) with the 5mm spacers, but there is no problem with the standard small brakes, so i want to take 8.5*18 ET25 (245/35).
    • Lol.. but then.. always come back to a JDM..
    • Glad to hear. If possible, get your tuner to check air's to make sure everything is still where it should be.
    • The problem with FB/Insta/Reddit etc comments relating to cars is simple. You get to ask a question once, and get one round of replies. For things that can actually be answered in a few lines of text, once, it's fine. After 6 hours, your original question is lost to the void. There are no follow ups, additional questions, anything. No project car is ever such a simple list of questions to ask. You need discussion.
    • Welcome.  Here's what I have noticed about forum vs FB..... FB; seems to be wallet racing, and the same few questions asked over and over. There *may* be some groups that are closer knit, but most have changed for the worse. SAU; unfortunately, no longer in its glory days. But....genuine people with similar interests. Not all about how much you spent and saying you dont have enough power. Sooooooo much knowledge available. Have personally seen people post up about literally topics I made myself, asking on FB like no one has done it before. Most has been done, and most of that is here.   If you ever feel like just general chatting theres the wasteland.  Other interests are also generally covered in other areas of the forum. Hope you enjoy hanging around. We would love to have you.   P.s. nice 32 😀
