Hey guys,

For all your people here who have (or have driven) an auto skyline before, at what speed do the auto transmission change the gears (in normal mode, not in power or snow mode)?

With my 2 other cars (that I have driven when on my Ls), my mum's old Commo VN changes to 2nd @ ~25km/h then to 3rd @~55km/h & you have to manually change to Overdrive (shift the knob to "blue D") @ 80km/h (what the instruction manual says).

With the Camry the gear changes occurs at ~20, 40 & 60.

However with my current R33, gear changes to 2nd when around 25km/h, however if I keep my foot down (not flooring it,) it won't change to 3rd until I hit 65km/h & I have no idea what speed it will change to 4th "normally" (I drove from 60 to 100 & it was still on 3rd)

I can "fix" the gear change problem by getting up to a certain "minimum" required speed & letting go off the accelerator, then the car will change to the next gear (I have found the "minimum" required speed for 3rd to be ~45km/h & 4th to be ~65km/h). For example I drive off from the lights, it changes gear to 2nd @ ~25km/h then as I hit past 45km/h I let go off the accelerator, it will change to 3rd, foot back on accelerator & I have to repeat this for it to get to 4th when I hit 65km/h.

Anyone have any idea on whats up with my transmission?

Btw this was all in normal mode & driving like a granny style.

Thanks

thats normal man. you've just learned to change up gears without using a clutch. congrats. the box is smart, and changes gears depending on speed and throttle position. so by changing throttle position, you can make it change, or let it hold a bit

As Basti said "The box is smart". These are all the normal functions of the r33 auto.

The standard r33 auto is a great piece of gear to by the way, there are a few good upgrades that won't break your bank. Check out the link in my signature to see my auto running as a full manualised auto. This can be acheived for around the $1000 mark.

Thanks for the help guys :P

So my car is running normal, thats good news... I was just wondering as it was acting different compared to the other auto cars I have driven (guess I could call their auto box "dumb boxes" lol)

btw nice car ~R33AzzA~, might get that shift kit once I have enough money lol.

Check out the group buy section for the Auto trans valve body. Call MV automatics (see the group buy) and they will give you all the advice you require. I have an auto and highly recomend the upgrade (as do many others)

    • Out of curiosity, how do you cover up the inspection hole? Surely it doesn't sit open like that, right? With grime and dirt coming in and oil going out?
    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything
