Hi Team,

Just snapped my speedo cable, and my power steering is dead. Still want to drive my car and eventually I will replace the cable, but just wondering if there's a quick fix to get the power steering to work, without replacing the speedo. I don't mind if the speedo doesn't work, I will use the GPS, just want to no if there's a way to trick the power steering without a speedo cable.

My car is r32 GTST. And I have completely removed Hicas.

Hope some can help.

Need an answer asap!!

Thanks

Only two ways i know of fixing it are a new speedo cable and the tomei hicas lock kit and in your case the later is useless.

Does anyone no if running without power steering will wreck the pump, its still pumping, but i think it always thinks its in low speed mode. Just want to drive my car.

just take the drive belt off it or just remove the power steer pump and u can get these plugs to block off the send and return power steer lines that go to the rack, if u wana get fully into it u can buy a different ratio center for the rack if it is goin to be non power steered.

I still want to have power steering, just to be able to use it without a speedo cable.

But out of interest is there a steering rack for a R32 that had no power steering ?

get the speedo cable fixed :P

brand new $80 from a nissan parts dealer and will take you about 2 hours to replace yourself or around $100 at a mechanic

if they tell you they have to order it from japan, just buy a second hand one from a wreckor

Its more the effort factor, and the reliability, as the cable is likely to snap again as the car is used mainly as drift/track car. I don't really need a speed, was more wondering if anyone new if it was possible to by pass the sensor to make power steering work. More like is there a way I can wire it to get around not having a speedo. I am sure there would have to be a way.

The speed sensor in the back of the cluster is a pulsed output, varying in frequency with road speed.

The hicas / power steering module converts this input, and uses a few others, to output a fixed frequency but pulse width modulated signal to the solenoid on the power steering rack.

If you don't have this speed input the module defaults after a few minutes to an output that approximates what it would be doing at 70km/hr. Theoretically a safe amount for low and high speed driving.

It is not doing any harm to the pump or hydraulics. I didn't have this input for about the first 18 months of owning my car, I really do like it now that I have it all working though..

Live with it, or just go and buy a new cable. It isn't expensive and if the old one has lasted for 15-18 years it is safe bet that the new one will too.

I hope this helps you.

Thanks mate this is very helpfull.

Just to confirm. The powersteering is effectivly working? But just runing as if it was at 70km/h all the time.

yes. It will be light for a little bit, like it is at standstill, then it will go harder and stay that way until you reset the electrics.

+1 :)

My speedo cable snapped just before Xmas and it was a few weeks before I could get a new one, high speed steering in carparks sucked it a bit.. specially with button clutch and 2way lol

So when it goes hard is it in that 70km mode? or is that in the several minutes before?

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything
