Hi all, I've been poking around the forum for the last week or so doing some research on the old Skylines.

I've been having some trouble with my current car (think the ecu is on the way out) so have been looking for a cheap daily and came across an old Datto Skyline for the right price, being free :)

Its been sitting for 18 months or so but was running well apart from an apparent "electrical problem" with the carby?

I'm going to try and get it going next weekend but was wondering what type of carby they have, and whats a good but cheap alternative if it's no good.

Also wondering if these things have any common problems that might need attention.

Sorry should have said, I'm not sure of the exact model but it's a 2 door and looks like this thing.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

You found a 1978 Datsun Skyline C210 coupe for free! Bloody hell - that's a score - they are getting very hard to find in any shape nowadays. If it still has the original alloy wheels, radio, tape player and is a manual, you are doing extremely well!

As for the carby - the single throat carby on your car can be easily unbolted and totally reco'd for little more than pocket change by your local carby place. Popular carby swaps are grabbing the round topped twin carbies + manifold from the 240z (hitachi, daf, or english SU), tripple-webbers if you have some serious cash, or the factory fuel injection system from the later models; C211, or R30 (too complex for me!)

Let me know if you need any parts or help with the project. Post a picture if you get a chance too. Cheers

Thanks guys, it's actually my cousins car(don't think he really knows what he's got)

The grass was pretty deep around the car but the wheels look a lot like the ones in the top post, as for the stereo I'm not sure but it's a manual. The body seems to be in fair shape for it's vintage but it will need a fresh coat of paint if I can convince my better half :) Looks to be a light metallic green kinda like the hot house green from the commonwhore?

I just want to get it rego'ed for now and maybe look at fixing her up some later on. Have just dropped the rego on my latest project a KE70 corolla wagon with 180rw/kw 4agte that has lots of goodies hanging off it waiting for a new home :D

Harvo, is it the one here in Perth that was in the Quokka?

Nah mate, I'm on the other side of the country, NSW.

Really good find. I have a soft spot for the oldies.

Post up some pics for all to see when you get a chance

Will do, I'm going to pick her up on the week end.

Cheers Dan

A mint green coupe with a black interior? Very, very nice. I actually bought one from a SAU member in Sydney, then had a small lapse of sanity and passed it on to a mate in Tasmania who is doing an RB25 conversion on it! Should have kept it for a rainy day...

It's not mint, but yeah, green with black interior

Mmmmmm an RB something would be nice or maybe a carby turbo set-up with the high flowed T3/T4 hanging off of my 4age

So I picked up the skyline today and have been giving it some love to try and get it going.

Started up fairly well with a new battery and a shot of fuel down the carby but the starter motor is tired, needs a good whack every now and then. Might just need a relay to got some more juice to it.

There was no fluid in the clutch reservoir (or brakes but that's for another day) I topped it up, bleed the system, fired her up and still can't select a gear but the slave cylinder was moving the clutch fork. Could something be seized or stuck or could the clutch fork be cracked and bent? happened on an old escort I had. anything else to check for? Is there a way to adjust it some how?

Couple of shitty pics, will get some better ones tomorrow :nyaanyaa:

Cheers Dan

Not to sure about the mechanical problem - your clutch fork theory sounds good. Could be a problem in the box itself, too.

Your car is the factory green and black (don't know about that pin-stripe though). It has the original radio, cassette, gear knob, steering wheel and alloys... All very hard to find stuff.

I would look for another car (r30, 280zx, 240k, 240-280c) with a good engine and box and just swap the whole lot complete. L24 engines are worth almost nothing. If you find an L28 for a good price, all the better for you!

Good luck with it - It's an unreal base for a project - and you shouldn't need to throw huge dollars at it either.

pm me if you feel the need to sell it

cash waiting :D

Will do champ, gotta give it a good clean-up.

Striped and cleaned the starter yesterday, will re-assemble and fit it back up tonight. Try and get the clutch moving too, sucks to have no gears

PS: Anyone got a spare driver side mirror?

Cheers Dan

Thanks mate,

I found the rest of the mirror in the back when I cleaned it out earlier (was side swiped hence the white scuff along the side of it in the second pic) it's still straight tho, anyway, I glued? the 2 pieces back together with copious amounts of metal-mend but I don't know how long that will last.

And another question? what other models can I poach parts off like a new starter motor or a clutch kit to suit the L24? or what models share the same clutch so I can order a new one if needed?

I can imagine what they'd say if I asked for one for a Datsun Skyline :D (I live in a small town)

Sorry for all the Q's and thanks for all your help :)

Thanks mate, your to kind :)

But I think postage would be a killer, need to get it driving so I can sort out the gremlins and get it rego'ed.

Discovered last night that the original radio/cassette still works (needs new speakers in the back)

and also a full size spare in the boot, cool. Love the funky dash too :)

I've actually got a new cd player with USB (cause all my cd's got stolen with my old rolla) and was wondering where people have put them with out having to cut/destroy anything.

Sorry for all the Q's but good info is scarce for these things.

Cheers Dan

Buy one off these, leave the original radio in it

    • @Murray_Calavera iam just considering options 🙂 of course it is very expensive so that why i ask here 🙂  @joshuaho96 I looked at that GCG hybrid(i remember looking at it few weeks before) So this is "that" hybrid where i send them my turbo and they upgrade the inside to Garrett stuff and then they send it back. It cost around 1200-1300 USD which is FAR cheaper than the HKS and it is what iam looking for(i just do not have experience like this...to send something off to "upgrade" ) @tylink720 that is like 150 USD turbo no? 😄 I dont think i have the "ease on my mind" with this kind of turbo. I just put over 7000k USD to "LINK" up my engine...dont want to blow it up with cheap turbo 😄     EDIT: https://www.cj-motor.com/gcg-turbo-charger-for-nissan-rb20det-rb25det-high?srsltid=AfmBOooVeOZ6CZ6r1AIv5m-KPaa6BvudIPJTY8LW78khkd-gQlsaCht9 I looked at this and it seems ok? It is that CGC hybrid and it costs around 1250 USD (with back shipping). Do any of you have experience with this hybrid on NEO turbo? I quickly look thru the forum/web and it seems very good.

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
