i've been told that after around 220rwkw and hard driving, the RB20 box will deteriorate. i never really listen to hearsay about mechanical parts and their strengths, because every car is different.

2 friends of mine (between 150-180rwkw) drive their cars like they're stolen. constant race changes, snapping gears and clutch kicks. their gear boxes have become very very noisy and it sounds almost like they're going to lose a gear any time soon.

i run 210rwkw at the moment, and i drive sane. my box is free of noises and engages all the gears properly.

the RB25DET gearbox is definitely a worthy upgrade if you're going to drive hard, but i'd say just drive till it breaks then worry about replacing or upgrading.

the story goes i got a cheap r32 off a mate cauz he was gonna get locked up if he caught driving i again. the gear box was thrashed but he said it still did third gear burnouts but i need to replace the box. i am not gonna lie i am gonna give it a bit as i get my licence back in 4 weeks after a 27 month suspention i am keen as to burn some rubber. so i just want to know if anyone out there has had a simular problem of a weak box and if anyone has put the r33 box in the r32 and the results. any help on this would be great cheers, jonno

If you plan to thrash it then putting another 32 box in might be cheaper but you will destroy it pretty easy as they are the weakest skyline box.

I would upgrade to the 33 box. Bigger and stronger and less chance of you breaking it again.

    • I feel like I'm missing something. You had an authorised installer come out and install a new alarm. Post install the car doesn't start, and you aren't getting the installer back to fix what they did wrong?
    • So either way it is gearbox out and look what is wrong?  I know about the input shaft bearing. Even before swap/new clutch the it sounded exactly like this: So is that inout shaft bearing or the other was installed backwards?  And can some please tell me the part number for that input shaft bearing? The gearbox is small box from R34 N/A and number is FS5W71C. Thank you
    • I am yet to see anyone ever regret a quaife or helical. ...other than drifting/skidpan duties. I kind of want to upgrade my factory helical with a Quaife (but really it's not ultimately that different, and is a MASSIVE UNDERTAKING), that's how good the hype is about them, that I want to try them 'just to see'
    • D2 and Ksport are essentially the same thing and basically just generic Taiwanese manufacture. Better than ChinaBay crap, but... not top shelf. Öhlins have got to be some of the best dampers around, so likely to be a good option. It's going to get to the point though where I suggest you buy from Oz. We have at least 2x excellent options here. If I were you though, I'd be talking to KW about doing something for the R33. There's bugger all difference between that and the 32. In GTR land, anyway.
    • KW only offers a set for the R32 GTR. Popular options are D2 racing, Ksport or Öhlins. I have a D2 Racing coilover set, though I don't know for sure which one.
