Castrol formula R 0w/40 is all i use and it has always given good oil pressure and still looks good after 5000kms, the only prob is the price, retail is like $80 5L, i pay $55 trade so if you shop around and talk to the right people you should be able to get a good price.

the Nissan recommendation is 7.5-30w for a brand new engine from the manual. But since its hard to get 7.5 most people go for a max of 10w...u most commonly can get 5w-Xw..the lower the number the faster the oil can get flowing when the engine is started to protect all the components.

im a MOTUL man so Motul for me.

as said earlier, mobil dont cope really well in temp department.

tries shell, much calmer but i could tell that it lacks in the power dept.

motul wont let you down, it hasnt let me. :/

How are they constructed differently? How do they behave differently? I'm not talking about something fundamentally different like a 60 weight mineral oil mixed in 50/50 with a 5W-30 synthetic oil, I'm talking about similar oils (synthetics of similar viscosities whether different brands or not) with the old oil drained out completely. How does the 1% of the old leftover oil fundamentally interfere with the performance of the 99% of fresh oil?

Just a quick update....

Been about a week with Shell Helix now, gave it a quick blat last night to see how it would handle the temps etc...

Oil temp went up higher than it has ever gone with the Mobil 1, and now when at idle the oil pressure gauge sits just above the 0 mark !!!

Cruising at 100 in 5th on flat ground when warm see's it sit under 2 on the factriy gauge now :)

I don't know if this is mega bad, but Mobil 1 never did this. And I've always been under the impression that good (factory limits) oil pressure is critical for an engine !

These are just my findings in comparing the two oils.

I'll be keeping an eye on it (temp and pressure) and if it doesn't stabilise within a week or 2 I'll be draining the oil and changing the filter and going for something else.

J

How hot was the oil before and after? Make sure the pressure gauge is working properly before casting judgement on the pressure, but temperature gauges usually don't go out of whack.

It seems as though the factory pressure gauge is working OK.

It's still resonding at the normal speed.

Only had one problem with the gauge and that was when I first got the car over 2 years ago. It ended up being crappy oil that they used. I changed the oil 1 week after getting the car and the gauge hasn't missed a beat since.

It seems strange that it happend at the same time as the oil change (pressure drop - Helix).

The temp when giving it a boot full was ~10 degrees hotter than the Mobil 1 in the same conditions.

Like I said, I'll keep an eye on it and see how things pan out.

I'd like to give it more of a chance before I make my judgement :)

jayson, i wouldn't be too worried. I've changed from Motul 300V to Mobil 1, and my oil pressures (on my aftermarket gauge) have been pretty stable, if not a touch lower with the Mobil 1. But admittedly the Mobil 1 is slightly lighter.

10 degrees of oil temp is not much at all. External conditions could easily cause this.

I have very little faith in factory oil pressure senders/gauges... mine has continually been up and down (i find that when i've been running for ages it tends to read alot lower), and i've had the original dash and a GTR dash in my car. I guess that it is the sender...

Give it a bit more time (go buy an aftermarket pressure gauge! :))

Good stuff Ronin. The best way to actually test is under the sam conditons. Had to be the same temp outside. How far did the run take place for etc. And a proper oil temp and oil pressure gauge is a must if want to make a comparission..or some kind of aftermarket management to log all the details and temps with certain condtions...allala.

Yepp, I'll hold out and give it a chance before I drain it. Just really scary seening the oil pressure gauge so low :) Just a paranoid thing ;)

BTW - just off topic a tad :D With an after market oil pressure gauge, how do you hook it up? I'm talking about mechanical one's, not the electrical ones..

I've got VDO boost and oil temp gauges up on the A pillar at the moment which I'll be moving down to the DIN space under the stereo, which means I can squeeze 3 gauges in..... So I'm looking at a VDO oil pressure gauge...

one of my mates had some unknow oil in his car...had oil pressure problems. Then we put some new stuff in Shell Helix Ultra. for the first couple of weeks the pressure was funny...now for the past couple of weeks it steady and at the correct level from what he tells me. Cheers Rob

Jay, i'm not sure if you can get mechanical oil pressure gauges? I guess you probably should be able to, but do you want 8bar or pressure going into the back of the gauge (i assume if it works the same way as a mechanical boost gauge)?

My electronic oil pressure gauge is tapped to one of the bolts holding the oil filter mount on the block. The sender then basically plugs into the back of the gauge :D

Ahh cool - I just found the VDO catledog and they have mechanical oil pres. The reason why I'm leaning towards the mechanical is that the mech ones are about 300 degrees sweep, while the electrical ones are only about 140 degrees sweep :D

And since the other 2 gauges I've got are 300 degrees sweep I'd like to match them up.. But you made a good point about the pressure line going into the cabin...

Hmmm, more thinking to do :)

Either that, or VDO make a exhaust temp gauge that is 300 degrees sweep too :) Not sure on price though.

J

i wouldnt use a mech oil pressure gauge if the line burst in the engine bay and u r not looking on the gauge all the time its goodbye engine , it doesnt long when u hear the bearings knock its to late . like redline gtr said its illegal as well to have oil line in the cab .

    • I thought I'd come back and add something I JUST learned. A Toyota LandCruiser with a 1HZ, mates perfectly with a bottle of Nulon brake fluid. As in, it perfectly screws in. Great make shift funnel when you cut the bottom of it off. This may work for your Corolla.   Unfortunately, tipping a 10L drum is much harder than a 4 to 6L bottle, and they no longer include the easy pour tap which was just perfection to use previously.
    • Guys since i bought r33 gts25t coupe 1994 automatic a/t(manual swap 350z gearbox)  all i got is problems, always problems. Lets start with that when i turn key into ignition(ON) fuel pump doesnt always works. Sometimes i have to turn key twice Off/on/off/on until it primes. Its new, dw300 - 340lph. My gearbox broke so i did gearbox swap, install different intake manifold, injectors and i take pipes. Car was sitting in garage for more than half a year. I did assembly all not that long ago and when i turn ignition cant hear prime. All of sudden it stopped working. Theres many videos on YouTube how to make relay mod on r33 straight from battery so i did and it doesnt work! 😰 30 - battery positive  87 - positive from fuel pump to relay 85, 86 - one of two wires from original fuel pump wires(light blue, grey) and it didn’t work. so I check on ignition and took original BLUE relays wires from trunk, next to fuses. (I believe it’s IGN+ and ECU pin 18. it didn’t work…  tried connecting (IGN+ from og relay) and (ECU 104 from 1of4 FPCM wires) to my new relay 85/86 and it didn’t work.  I unplug FPCM. Didn’t work. im thinking what’s wrong   fuel pump is working, if I leave IGN+ on 85 and 86 straight to ground it works but it’s just nonstop. Since it getting constant 12v after key in ON. light blue wire gives me 6-8v.  so how this should be connected? What causing ECU not giving — on pin? Or I did sth wrong and that’s why it doesn’t work? I need negative signal on ECU that control fuel pump. What this should be?
    • You can use your VIN to look up the factory part number somewhere like amayama, and then look to order new if necessary. https://www.amayama.com/en/genuine-catalogs/nissan Depending on price you might want to rebuild instead. @GTSBoy I had an interesting insight into US market parts when the Titan rear calipers were sticking. New calipers were dirt cheap, about 20% more than a rebuild kit....they are just considered throw away maintenance items
    • Funny, but really not funny. Thank god (most) f the world has moved on since then
    • Lots of votes for driving onto a plank first; that is the quickest way I've found, 25mm is enough for my case but that will vary by car It also depends where you are going for. On the 32 I can get to the rear diff with my floor jack if I do that end first, and get it up on stands. Then I lift the front from either front tow hook as high as needed, also onto stands. Sometimes I need a small lift on the other tow hook to get it level enough If I do the front first I can't get to the rear diff because of the angle of the car Other options are getting to the front mount of the rear subframe from in front of the wheel (if only lifting one side, or just do both which is a bit of a pain compared to one lift from the diff), or also the gearbox cross member mount on the driver's side if you are  just trying to lift the driver's side. I This is the jack I use; it says 75mm clearance but of course that is only on the lower section so if you have to reach too far in like the diff you still get stuck. https://www.snapon-bluepoint.com.sg/category/Floor-Jacks/product/Floor-Jack,-2-Ton-Low-Profile
