Alright, this probably could've gone on the non-Skyline vehicle forum, but I figure some of the answers will be Skylines, and this forum gets more views anyway.

More a curiosity than else, although I do plan on buying a nice turbo charged car a few years down the track, but I'm wondering what are the best value cars in terms of bang for your buck.

Lets say you have $20,000 to buy the car, and spend on modifications (ignore insurance, rego, certificates and such), what's the highest kilowatts you could get ATW? An example of an answer might be (this is my guess anyway); R33 GTS-T, with turbo set up equalling about 250-260rwkw. Others might say 300zx, or a SR20DET, I dunno.

Anyway, on to the questions;

$10,000 - What's quick, cheap and fun.

$20,000 -

$30,000 -

$40,000 -

$50,000 -

$75,000 -

$100,000 -

$250,000 -

No need to answer all of them obviously, I did throw out a lot of values. Oh, one more question. For lets say... $25,000 (a realistic number for me) what car would accelerate from say 20kmph to 60kmph in the shortest time? I ask this because unless I goto the track or break the law, that's about the most fun I can have in my car.

Thanks for any input.

Jeeeeeez. You'd have to be asking about 2nd hand vehicles from your Q.

And I could only answer your Q by looking at (used) cars at current market value running with a 'stock' set-up Kieran.

$10K = Alfetta GTV V6 (just to be different lol)

$20K = R32 GT-R V-Spec

$30K = R33 GT-R V-Spec III

$40K = Evo IX

$50K = R34 GT-R V-Spec

$75K = R34 GT-R V-Spec II Nur

$100K = R34 GT-R V-Spec II N1

$250K = Lamborghini Gallardo

Thanks for the response. I was referring to used cars by the way, trying to keep it realistic and within people's budgets.

See it was my understanding that from about 30K to 50K Supra's would dominate, simply because of the strength of the engine. It really all came down to how much you wanted to spend on the turbo upgrade. Am I wrong in assuming that you can get up to 400-450rwkw from stock internals on a 2jz... TT Supra engine (I don't remember the exact name). I mean, at 50K an R34 GTR would be a damn nice car, but a Supra with a T88 all the upgrades to go along with it (injectors, ECU, etc) and any excess spent on suspension and brakes would straight up flatten the GTR.

I thought 100-250K would be done up GTRs, with maybe an R32 at 100K and a R34 at 250K, with 2.8 litre engine, strengthened internals, bigger turbos, everything, or just an R35.

Like I said, I was curious. Most of what I learn I get from browsing these forums and magazines (I catch the train a lot and have a bad habit for picking them up). I was wondering what sort of builds people would recommend, whether turbo charged Honda's would turn up (NSX, S2000), RX-7's, old RX's with 20B's in them, 26/30RBs, maybe even monster V8's.

    • I'm back from the dyno - again! I went looking for someone who knew LS's and had a roller dyno, to see how it shaped up compared to everything else and confirm the powerband really is peaking where Mr Mamo says it should. TLDR: The dyno result I got this time definitely had the shape of how it feels on the road and finally 'makes sense'. Also we had a bit more time to play with timing on the dyno, it turns out the common practice in LS is to lower the timing around peak torque and restore it to max after. So given a car was on the dyno and mostly dialled in already, it was time for tweaking. Luis at APS is definitely knowledgable when it came to this and had overlays ready to go and was happy to share. If you map out your cylinder airmass you start seeing graphs that look a LOT like the engine's torque curve. The good thing also is if you map out your timing curve when you're avoiding knock... this curve very much looks like the inverse of the airmass curve. The result? Well it's another 10.7kw/14hp kw from where I drove it in at. Pretty much everywhere, too. As to how much this car actually makes in Hub Dyno numbers, American Dyno numbers, or Mainline dyno numbers, I say I don't know and it's gone up ~25kw since I started tinkering lol. It IS interesting how the shorter ratio gears I have aren't scaled right on this dyno - 6840RPM is 199KMH, not 175KMH. I have also seen other printouts here with cars with less mods at much higher "kmh" for their RPM due Commodores having 3.45's or longer (!) rear diff ratios maxing out 4th gear which is the 1:1 gear on the T56. Does this matter? No, not really. The real answer is go to the strip and see what it traps, but: I guess I should have gone last Sunday...
    • 310mm rotors will be avilable from Australia, Japan, and probably a few other places. Nothing for the front can be put on the back.
    • The filter only filters down to a specific size. Add to that, the filter is AFTER the pump. So it means everything starts breaking your pump even if its being filtered out.
    • Just like in being 14mm too small (296mm) makes it not fit, being 14mm too big (324mm) it also won't fit. You want to find the correct rotor.
    • @GTSBoy Ok so that was the shops problem...they showed R33 rotors on R34 page and i did not know 296 do not fit(and are for R33) Yes i bought "kit" with rotors and pads. Pads are ok(i have GTT calipers front and rear). They have some 324mm but no 310mm. So i dont know if they would fit. I have 17inch LMGT4s So another question. Can i fit those in the rear or they are just "too" big for that?
